Jinda Thai, Melbournians' choice Thai restaurant

If you searched for best Thai restaurants in Melbourne, you'll find Chin Chin (technically a fusion of everything Southeast Asian) and Kati Thai... along with Jinda Thai. Craving for Thai food and also to strike off this long-standing restaurant from my food bucket list, I pulled along all my favourite people in Melbourne for this meal!

We are all Asians from different countries, which is interesting how we came together to try Thai food - none of us are from Thailand though.. given the creative and extensive menu of Jinda's, we ordered six items to share, all of which are signature items. The overall feel is that: it's good but falls short of expectations. Just like the smattering of other Thai restaurants I've tried, every dish was on hyper-seasoning mode, with extremely rich and full flavours that sent my tastebuds into overdrive. It seems there is no room for a breather, it'll actually be wonderful to pair these dishes with lots of rice.

If I had to choose, I enjoyed Jinda better than Chin Chin (although the reason why I wasn't impressed by either was the same) - and here are some of the more memorable dishes that we had: the som tum soft shell crab which essentially meant green papaya salad soft shell crab is the must-have here. This was probably the only dish that had a good balance of both the milder and stronger tastes, a refreshing mix of the papaya salad really helped. Next was a dish name I was most amused about - gra pow gai grob, stir-fried crispy chicken with chilli paste served with basil leaves! Although it was quite salty and spicy, it was wonderfully delicious together with rice. Then there was the dish that will not go wrong - pineapple fried rice which we could choose combination meat or combination seafood. The grilled moo yang - barbequed pork neck, Thai-style, served with nam chim savoury and spicy sauce was tend towards dryness so.. I think it's not as good as I wished it was, though the sauce base was cloyingly sweet and piquant in a good way that offset it.

The service was rather haphazard, possibly because they were dealing with a full house with a queue building up at the entrance, and there were no pleasantries. It was fine actually because I was surrounded by company that I absolutely love, I was in my final week in Melbourne and free from schoolwork - so curt service didn't really bother me that much. So Jinda! Yes or no? I'm not completely confident in recommending this place, all in all, I conclude that maybe Melbourne isn't the place you go for Thai food. It is attuned to the tastebuds of locals who prefer stronger flavours and might not pander to your liking (unless you like it strong too ;)).

Melbourne: Manchester Press, bagels in a back-alley celebrated cafe

Manchester Press! Last cafe of my entire five-month wandering journey in Melbourne.
The other one that got away was Hardware Societe that has a perpetual, permanent queue. But Manchester Press has a queue that is quite hard to beat as well, you put your name in the list and basically you stand around this alley and wait for your name to be called.

how late to the game were we to be subjected to a tattered menu like this
Have no idea what Manchester Press had before entering, all I knew was this is one of the 'cafes that I should have visited if I have been to Melbourne'. Damn, click farm listicles! Typical. Manchester Press comes across like a dungeon, really dark and huge and cavernous, it's unique. After all it's really hidden in a backalley.

Start off every single brunch with a mocha - this is where all my money goes, I swear.

Closed or open bagels for you? At Manchester Press, you're the king - you get to choose if you want poppy seeds, wholegrain, sesame seed, plain or gluten free bagels. Ohh that's too many choices for real. We got the texas bbq pulled pork bagel - slow roasted for 14 hours, and topped with home-made slaw and pickles - the popular choice around here and the Ny Lox open bagel - mountain of smoked salmon and baby capers, served on top of a fresh dill cream cheese!

The situation on the table - bagels served, cameras out, coffees drunk to the bottom of the cup. You can guess how long the service took... but hey, good things are worth waiting for (I don't say this often because my patience runs thin easily). I'm actually not a huge fan of bagels, but in the honour of trying-new-things-because-I'm-on-exchange (plus this is one of those cafes) - I tried this, and it was superb, it is just one of those things that demand for your liking. The texas bbq pulled pork was thoroughly marinated and drenched in the BBQ sauce so the bagel had none of those dryness issues that I anticipated. Great job here, and yes, this place is definitely recommended.

Goodbye Melbourne - Huxtaburger, EUREKA Skydeck 88, and on losing my wallet.

This Australia series has gone on long enough, 15 posts on Perth where I begin my journey, 80 posts on the city of Melbourne that I love so so so much, 13 posts on Sydney where I went over during Easter break, 3 posts on Adelaide where I visited with Caroline. There are too many things worth documenting and writing it down somewhere for memory's sake, but I guess I have covered most of my exploring and food-hunting journey till now.. if I find anything that I missed out, I'll still come back from time to time to tell you more about my time here. Probably my cooking adventures (hah), some of the journeys I made while I was wandering around or one of those suburb checklists for those who plan to visit Melbourne. You will find this list very helpful. So we've come to the very last day. What did I do on the last day?

Other than packing up my stuff, clearing my room and feeling sad over the whole process, I definitely have to make time to meet up with Caroline, one of the lovely people I've met in Melbourne. 'Who knows when's the next time we'll meet,' we'd said, and even till one year on, it seems that life is passing by too fast for anything to materialize (school, assignments and projects).

when we were in Adelaide
I haven't gotten round to write about how I met Caroline, which was as magical as how I met Lexi (on the cross-sections of a road.. more on this next time) - but this one, I actually have pictures before and after that particular encounter. See, the importance of obsessively documenting everything. It started with the thought of seeking out a particular matcha soft serve after I popped by Chuckle Park Bar & Cafe.

This matcha/ green tea soft serve ice-cream is from Rice Workshop, on 238 Little Bourke Street.
At 2 dollars a cone, it's actually a major steal because the folks here are immensely generous, and it is of really good quality, velvety rich matcha soft serve. People flock here for it. Anyway, it was Week 11 and I've heard too much about this soft serve that I knew I had to go in and try before procrastination got the better of me and I end up not trying at all.

This is the matcha soft serve. I even had to queue for it... but imagine the thrill of finally getting to it. I love matcha so yes, I was 99% certain I will love it even before trying it. After taking a picture of it with my trusty digital cam, I shuffled into a small table at the side:

I found this image via Google images, but that's where I sat. There was a filming crew in Rice Workshop on that day and they were taking up all the other tables around the cramped eatery, and therefore Caroline came over and asked if we could share the table - I think she had a takeout box of rice of some sort. Then we started talking, I guess because the table was really small and it's too strange to eat in silence without talking. But you know not everyone can click easily and interestingly, we did! We exchanged numbers after that, one thing led to the other and we even went on the Adelaide trip together! 😊

Caroline and I met up over some delicious burgers and fries at Huxtaburger; she had tried it at the outlet in her suburb and found it really good so she introduced this to me. 🙆 The meat patties were very juicy and flavourful, though Caroline said the city's outlet wasn't as good as the one she had in Richmond. This branch was particularly difficult to locate too :o But anyway.. food aside, we had our goodbyes at Flinders Station. Till we meet again.
Then I went ahead to have my own solo time at EUREKA Skydeck 88, something I wanted to do in the longest time, but I knew I was saving it up for the last week of my stay here, so I can have full appreciation of whatever I will see at the tallest vantage point in Melbourne city. This building has the fastest lifts in the Southern Hemisphere! Visitors are propelled to the observation deck on the 88th floor in just 38 seconds. At the Skydeck, I saw the 360 degree views of Melbourne and its surrounding areas thanks to the floor to ceiling windows. On a clear day and depending on how good your eyesight is, the skydeck boast of views up to 75 km in every direction. Just look at this:

Beyond how beautiful it is, it was quite heart-wrenching for me to bid the city goodbye while looking carefully at it, every street and many suburbs that I've frequented nearly everyday to make the most of it, I could recognize them from here. I picked the timing to visit it right before sunset so I could see the day-to-night transition.

I waited till the sky got completely dark, and see the whole city lit up, but it wasn't very conducive for taking photos because the glass was reflecting a lot of light within the skydeck. It was beautiful, nonetheless.

Selfie with the city, er, kind of. Later I had another gathering in Fitzroy with the Sydney gang at Attic but pictures were too blurry to be presentable... except this group shot, which is the most precious of course, the ones who brought so much laughter and joy (and eye-rolling exercises) 😄:

They are the cutest bunch!💛

Not forgetting my one and only loveliest and kindest roommate Yssa, and Gary, who have made my exchange experience so wonderful 😆 For always giving me encouragement and being sporting enough to try out the experimental food I make in the kitchen, and much more. The best people on Earth are always found at the most unexpected places. 💛💛💛

Coming to the end of my journey, the morning before I caught my plane back to Singapore, obviously Fate has it that I mustn't leave without a bang, because while going to my favourite place in my suburb (okay, I have too many favourite places but I picked the one I will miss the most) - Queen Victoria Market and getting some delicious burritos and the best coffee, Market Lane Coffee... I lost my wallet. I don't exactly remember how it happened, but it was within five minutes after this picture was taken:

probably nothing to do with her, I was too preoccupied with documenting everything, this is for illustration purposes
I know right.

At that point in time, I figured it probably slipped out of my coat's outer pocket because it was so bulky - with receipts and cards, not cash - or pickpocketed(?!) - or I left it at the counter of Market Lane, or... it was so crowded and quite a rush, so anything was possible. Though it is the first time I ever lost a wallet, so I panicked. Thank goodness I had Yssa and Gary with me at that point, or I probably would have suffered a heart attack on the floor of Queen Vic Market. We re-traced our steps but we couldn't find it on the floor nor the counter, and nobody at Market Lane knew anything.

It was ready to mar my happy experience in Melbourne, but I really didn't want it to. I was quite upset, especially with the need to cancel my bank card, losing my Myki card, identification cards, any spare cash that I had, polaroids, pictures, everything. I just realized my wallet is a huge part of my life that I obviously took for granted. 😳

So, approximately six hours prior to my plane's takeoff, I had to make a police report so I could claim insurance, though that was not much of a comforting thought since many things in there could not be compensated by money. 😥

The police station in North Melbourne was incredibly inefficient and slow, there was practically nobody at the counter when we entered, and after ringing the bell, someone came only after ten minutes (what). So if you do encounter a robbery, running into the police station may not guarantee your safety. We did the administrative login and paperwork, which ended unceremoniously with 'we'll call you if there's anything'. Sorry for the lack of images to spice up this story, but I obviously wasn't in the mood for taking pictures anymore. 😥

We went home and picked up my luggage,  said my goodbyes to Yssa and Gary tearfully, and texted Lexi who was a lifesaver too. We arranged to fly back to Singapore and Beijing respectively at the same timing, so she got us to the airport without a hitch. On the way to the airport, I received a call, which began oddly:

'Hello, is this Amie?'
'Um yes?'
'Somebody found your bank card.'
'Oh?! Did you find just my bank card or the entire wallet? Who is this speaking?' (too excited for niceties)
'This is the Melbourne East Police Station, we have your card and your wallet, we've called the bank to check and they told us you've cancelled your card.'

Within three hours of losing my wallet, somebody actually found my wallet, returned it to the police station - 2km away. Faith in humanity completely restored... I was amazed and beyond thankful that my wallet was actually coming back to me. At the moment when we were retracing steps in Queen Victoria Market, I was certain I was going to lose it forever. There was cash in there, at least 50 AUD dollars and my bank card, everything that anyone could use immediately and had absolutely zero obligations to give it back. I couldn't go back to Flinders Street to personally claim it, so I called Ruoyu to help me get it back, the wonderful girl which I should really get to meeting up with soon 😆

Amazingly, everything in my wallet was intact - at least as much as I could remember - cash and all, and all I could say is: Melbourne you are truly one amazing heck of a city, not just the crazy inventive street art, infrastructure, tram lines, but the people. The soul of a place.

Enroute back to Singapore at Darwin International Airport for a few hours of stopover, peeling layers of clothes off because it was getting to be really warm even at 21 degrees, and hobo-ing at restaurant seats to catch a quick nap before touching down in Changi Airport, Singapore.

"And to all Singaporeans, welcome home."

Homecoming.

Universal Studios Singapore (USS) Over Easter Weekend & All The Tips You Need

$

0

Ready for a whole day of adrenaline? Universal Studios Singapore (USS) has got more than enough activities and rides to keep you entertained from day to night. Strange thing is, I have only been to USS except for its opening week in 2010 and most rides weren't even ready, so when Lexi is over and said she wanted to go for it, I was like lezzgo!!!

On USS tickets...
Only after we bought the tickets, we realized it was Easter Friday and we're going to be swamped by crowds. That's a bit crazy because you know you have to wait super long for rides on holidays. Buy the tickets online beforehand. Don't queue at the USS ticket counter, you'll be paying the same price but spend extra energy and effort queuing outside.

Is the Express Ticket necessary?
Battlestar Galactica: Red - Human line had a nearly 3-hour regular queue and 50-min express queue; and Blue - Cylon line had 1-hour regular queue and 15-min express queue when we were there. Queue length also depends what time try the rides. If you want to complete the rides you want on public holidays, get the Express Ticket. After all, you probably won't be returning any time soon so you might as well enjoy USS thoroughly for one entire day. The Express Ticket is necessary on public holidays to ensure your time there is well-spent. Print your Express Ticket as they require you to show it at each station that gains you access to the express queue.

How much are the tickets?
The original price of the Entry Ticket on the official website is $74 (Adult), and the Express Ticket - Limited Rides is $50 (Adult). Lexi managed to get us tickets for $100 for both the Entry Ticket and Express Ticket (Limited). You can try other avenues to get the tickets but verify the authenticity of the ticket at your own risk.

Planning your day at USS

This is probably the most mentally strenuous activity to do because there are too many rides, performances, appearances character meet-and-greet to complete! Then, you will be assaulted in all directions by screams, loud background music and super cute furry toys all around that it'll be impossible to think. It will be strategic to remember some key points on how to finish nearly everything by actually sticking to the tips (we didn't).

Getting to USS
You can either walk across the boardwalk to avoid the crowds at the tram on peak days or take the tram at the top floor of Vivo City. Alight at Waterfront Station - the first station.

Tip 1: Begin your USS day at 10am

Unfortunately I woke up that day in a terrible state (caffeine overdose again, how do I manage to do this to myself multiple times) and had to rest a bit in the morning before heading down to USS. Ideally, you should aim to reach USS by 10am. On public holidays, the tram that brings guests into Sentosa will be packed. We took around 40 minutes from the start of queue to reach USS itself.

Tip 2: What to bring/wear
1. Digital camera or just your phone. DSLR not recommended
Rely on a compact digital camera or your phone, because there are many rides that require you to deposit your belongings into lockers and you don't want to try to stuff your DSLR into that tiny locker. Or worry about it being damaged or lost if you have to put it temporarily at the belongings area for certain rides.

2. Ponchos/ Ziplock bags for your digital items
There are going to be water rides and don't miss out on them just because you're not water-proof enough. Ponchos for yourself, and ziplock bags for your phone and cameras will be important. In addition, ensure that your bags and clothes are prepared to get wet (ie. don't bring your expensive suede shoes and bags).

3. Snacks and food
It's no surprise but the restaurants available in USS are expensive, not value-for-money and has long queues, thus, it'll be good to keep the hangry monsters at bay by bringing your own snack supply. After all you will be doing a lot of high-intensity activities that will make you really hungry.

4. Comfortable shoes
Self-explanatory - you have to be walking around quite a bit so leave your heels at home!

5. Hair-ties
For humans with long hair, hair-tie is a must in case for those crazy rides.

6. Shorts/skorts/pants/jeans with tight pockets/ pockets with zips
Because you need somewhere to keep your USS maps and in case you got the Express Ticket, you need somewhere to store the printed ticket while you go onto rides (pretty much the only things you need to carry when going onto rides).

7. (Water-proof) Watch
You can always rely on your phone but you won't always have your phone with you. It's good to keep time in case you miss certain shows or meet-and-greets!

Tip 3: Move in an anti-clockwise direction.
Start with New York!

When we entered, everything looked so exciting we took off in the wrong direction towards Madagascar. No, start with New York and go from there because everything will fall into place better this way. In New York, there are not many activities going on but one thing you can do is to take pictures first while there are not so many people! Note that character meet & greet timings vary depending on the dates you go, so if there's a particular character you really really wanna meet, take note of the timing and go find it accordingly even if it doesn't fit in the anti-clockwise schedule.

Tip 4: Conquer the scary rides first.
@ Sci-Fi City, my favourite sub-theme park.

Sci-Fi City is undoubtedly my favourite part of the whole USS. The playlist that goes on and on at Sci-Fi City gives the whole precinct an otherworldly atmosphere, with metallic clanging and screeching sounds to make it seem like flying vehicles are moving all around. At Sci-Fi City, we began with the TRANSFORMERS The Ride: The Ultimate 3D Battle.

TRANSFORMERS The Ride: The Ultimate 3D Battle
This super popular and hit ride was more like a 4D-experience, with amazing strong gusts of wind, heat, light, and electrifying effects while sitting in an indoor ride. It was much more spectacular and immersive than I thought what an indoor ride would be. Recommended? Definitely.

We skipped the Accelerator because it looks like it's going to give us a headache (spinning teacups).

Then, we went on to Battlestar Galactica HUMAN Red Track - we waited for 50 minutes in the Express queue. It was good that there was some waiting time to give us some time to compose ourselves.

Battlestar Galactica HUMAN Red Track
It certainly was not as scary as I thought. I am not someone who loves roller coasters but after Battlestar Galactica, I might just change my mind. It's easy enough to be enjoyable but not overly frightening. The HUMAN track is easier than the CYLON track, with only twists and turns over 14 storeys in the air, and you get to put your feet down on a platform in the ride. This star attraction is a MUST-TRY at USS! It is probably a 6/10 on the scary meter, so you can try this out before going for CYLON.

We didn't go onto Battlestar Galactica CYLON blue track immediately because the queue was too crazy, but I'll just document my thoughts on it here.

Battlestar Galactica CYLON Blue Track
Ah-ha, now we are talking about something scary. It was a level above the HUMAN track, with legs dangling mid-air and there are many portions in the ride that flipped the riders upside down with its corkscrew and cobra rolls, with an anti-gravity sense that felt like we were going to be flung out. Needless to say I absolutely love this more than the HUMAN Red Track. Adrenaline skyrocketed as we screamed our lungs out! The ride was shorter than I wished it was. I'll give it a 7/10 on the scary meter.

Tip 5: Repeat the rides you love after 7pm.

This was what we did for our favourite ride at Ancient Egypt - Revenge of the Mummy! We had the most fun here because it was indoors (air-con!), it had really cool effects, and kick-ass drops in the ride. I thought indoors ride would be meh as compared to the towering Battlestar, but no. Imagine that you have to conquer both the fear of heights, unknown and dark in Revenge of the Mummy, that, would be thrilling! Expect anti-gravity drops here. You have to try it, we went for it three times. Probably would have gone more if the walk from the entrance to the ride wasn't so far. We even got frightened and ran away from a fellow visitor who randomly jump-scared us because the whole atmosphere was so creepy (can't believe that together we're half a century old). After 7pm, there was practically no queue for the regular queue and you can go on the rides repeatedly.

Tip 6: Catch all the meet-and-greet characters at Hollywood Walk of Fame.

After getting lunch at the nearby Mel's, it's time to dish out your cameras and GoPros for this ultimate parade at USS where all the characters will walk around all to see everyone. This is your chance to grab a selfie with them if you're at the first row of audience, then you can strike one thing off your to-see-list!

Tip 7: The Lost World
Catch the WaterWorld, do the Canopy Flyer at dusk

The WaterWorld was closed for maintenance when we were there (22/2 - 31/3) but it should be open by now. It is highly recommended to visit the WaterWorld with its stunts, explosions and thrills at this water show. The Lost World opens at 11am. You would probably reach here slightly after noon right after the shenanigans at New York and Sci-Fi City, so it'll be insanely hot to do the lovely Canopy Flyer... head over to Hollywood for lunch first. Nevertheless, complete the Canopy Flyer ride at dusk for a lovely cool ride.

Canopy Flyer
For a relaxing ride that we didn't scream on, this is one of my favourites and perfect for winding down the day. We did this slightly after sun-set, which gives you a good 'prehistoric bird's eye view' over Jurassic Park.

Tip 8: Far Far Away: Puss in Boots Giant Journey

I would consider Far Far Away the relatively kid-friendly one, but for adults, it could be quite boring. The best thing about Far Far Away is that it is ridiculously photogenic and totally channelling Hans Christian Andersen vibes everywhere. We tried the Shrek 4D Adventure which was quite draggy and pretty much a waste of time, though it was a good rest after running around the whole place! The kids were thrilled by the movie though. We also did the Puss in Boots Giant Journey ride after the sun has set, it was quite mild and more interesting 'plot-wise', with many things around the ride to see and enjoy. It's a pity you can't take pictures on the ride - safety reasons, but there are some cute stuff going on in here. It would have been nice to pop around here before it got too dark, though they had lights on, it definitely didn't do justice to how pretty the set looks. The Enchanted Airways was another one meant for children but we went on it anyway, it was very relaxing!

Tip 10: Madagascar - super cute factor!

Aww so cute! As a young adult, I was more entertained by the Madagascar rides which were probably still catered to kids... because the Madagascar Crate Adventure was hilarious and immensely adorable. I am embarrassed to admit I've never watched any of the Madagascar movies before, but even then I was very, very entertained. The Crate Adventure was very substantial with water features and slightly thrilling parts. No spoilers for you, go and play this!

Tip 11: End off with New York's Lights, Camera, Action!

We nearly missed this because it looked rather unimpressive on the outside, but I'm so glad we didn't! It was mindblowing to see the set of Steven Spielberg as they demonstrated LIVE how a set is done. Plot: A major hurricane to hit New York City. I totally didn't expect it to be so crazy. But USS will exceed your expectations.

Of course, merchandise is everywhere, no tips on this.
Resist the urge to shout "take my money"!?

Bonus tip: Eye-candies, ladies!

Did you scroll to this point? You get a bonus tip for your patience!!!
I nearly maxed out my 16GB SD card taking snaps of them because them - The Cruisers are just way too cute. Four of them, surely at least one of them will catch your eye. Is it the Prince-Charming lookalike, the typical jocky guy, the suave and sweet one or the super macho one? Personalities of these guys are imagined, I didn't even get their names... 😭 They were singing classic songs from Westlife and Backstreet Boys including Uptown Girl, ready to steal hearts. 😂

Recommended Rides (in descending order)
1. Battlestar Galactica - HUMAN and CYLON lines (Sci-Fi City)
2. Revenge of the Mummy (Ancient Egypt)
3. TRANSFORMERS The Ride: The Ultimate 3D Battle (Sci-Fi City)
4. Madagascar The Crate Adventure (Madagascar)
5. Canopy Flyer (The Lost World)
6. Puss in Boots Giant Journey (Far Far Away)
7. Enchanted Airways (Far Far Away)
8. SHREK 4D Adventure (Far Far Away)

Recommended Activities (in descending order)
1. Hollywood Walk of Fame (Hollywood)
2. WaterWorld (The Lost World)
3. Lights, Camera, Action! (New York)
4. Lake Hollywood Spectacular Fireworks
5. The Cruisers

We didn't complete every single thing available at USS - that's impossible given that there's too many things. This itinerary is recommended more for young adults than children because we skipped most of the rides for juniors. That's it for this long post on Universal Studios Singapore! Hope these tips will help in your planning to this awesome place and have an entertaining day there.

Singapore: Dapper Coffee with Sugar

Dapper Coffee with Sugar for you? Nope not the condiment, but the app!
I probably would never have found Dapper without Sugar because it is set in the downtown hipster wonderland that I've just discovered (loving this better than Duxton now), the Amoy Street/ Ann Siang Hill/ Boon Tat Street area. It's also home to an impressive row of cafes, bars and restaurants like FYR, My Awesome Cafe, and more. But today, I'll be introducing to you Dapper, a true hidden find on the second floor. Most people might pass by it without batting an eyelid despite the signs outside - it's that elusive.

Dapper Coffee collaborated with Sugar to create a series of Premium deals - one of which is the lunch set which is a pesto vegetarian pasta with iced tea. The idea of trying out somewhere new and a hipster café that I haven't heard of made me tap into this.

Just realized I got to earn Usage Rewards too for opening the app! Cool beans.

Upon entering, the lady at front of house welcomed me and cheerfully told me "free seating". I shuffled into a seat near the window because sunlight is enough reason. They have a pretty cool menu, even with a 'secret menu' page - heh guess it isn't thaat secretive if it's already on the menu right. I was there for a purpose and so I used my Sugar premium voucher ($14) when ordering.

They seemed experienced enough and transaction went on smoothly. Within 5 minutes, my iced fruit fusion tea came and it is so delicately pretty, I was sold instantly. A deep shade of fuschia and floral fragments dusted atop? Yes this is the sort of thing I love! The iced tea is rather light, very refreshing but I do wished it tasted stronger. A case of looks prettier than it tastes but I guess I still like it considering its presentation.

Then came the vegetarian nori cashew pesto pasta with a runny egg on top. The pasta is al dente, though done with extremely generous sprinkles of black pepper and herbs. They definitely can go easy on the black pepper. The egg helped to ease the black pepper, and overall it was quite delicious.

All in all, Dapper Coffee is quite a cool place to hang out - office-goers huddle in groups for engaging conversations over lunch and girlfriends having a laugh.. It felt like you can truly let your hair down at this cafe which disconnect with the rest of the world.

Singapore: Your regular hair maintenance with The Comb Salon

$

0

Do you know that the average time between hair appointments for ladies is 3 months? To stay presentable, to prevent hair roots from being too obvious and to ensure there are not too many split ends that is the number one reason why your hair looks frizzy! I visited The Comb Salon for my most recent hair appointment and was pleasantly surprised by how fast and effective they were at helping me revitalize my hair, which makes it perfect for your regular hair maintenance.

The hair that needs some desperate saving.
I have left it to grow out naturally but it has reached a point of being really unsightly.
I couldn't stand it anymore.

To my horrors, I found a lot of split ends in my hair - I used to think that split ends refer to the classic Y shape, but no... knots and right angles are notoriously good at making your hair look super frizzy. It means you need a really good trim to keep your hair in shape again.

The Comb is located in Gemmill Lane, close to Raffles Place, Chinatown and Telok Ayer MRT. This means all the office ladies nearby can come down for your hair maintenance easily. Stepping into The Comb, it feels really elegant, clean and sleek. This white and wood combination never fails to make me feel so at ease.

The team at The Comb
The Comb is a super popular Korean hair salon in Singapore. It is helmed by Creative Director Rina Kil. This hair salon was designed with a comfortable atmosphere and a “straight to the point” solution- solving central principle in mind. From what I observed with how they treat the other customers, the team at The Comb are super serious with their work, ensuring that their customers are comfortable during their service, and that every customer walks away happy and satisfied. My stylist is Ryan Jin, a senior stylist at this beautiful hair salon. I would recommend him definitely for his hospitality, skill and speed.

Service, perks and comfort at The Comb
When I entered, I was ushered into a seat, and after I settled down, I was given the nicely decorated service menu and asked to choose the tea or coffee that I want. They provide a premium range of TWG tea and freshly brewed Nescafe, which is pretty impressive considering other salons don't put in as much effort in this aspect. The latest magazines are available here - with a good selection of Vogue, and other local magazines which kept me entertained throughout my time here. There was not a moment that I felt bored. They have awesome playlists here too which made me feel like I'm in a MV all the time. Otherwise, there's an ongoing runway show on their plasma TV at the back which you can watch.

Major plus point: great lighting for selfies.
Though not so good hair for that... will wait for Ryan to work magic on me.
I was doing a Colour and Cut this time.

After a consultation on the colour and the level of brightness that I wanted, Ryan went to prepare the hair dye quickly and returned within 5 minutes. He is probably the fastest among all my experiences.

Then they started working the hair dye through my head... really doubly quick than the normal speed that I am used to - I was pleasantly surprised by that. There is also no ammonia smell and in fact the hair dye smells quite nice. I guess most salons are phasing out ammonia dyes... meanwhile I was busy flipping my magazines and reading on the latest gossip in the local entertainment industry.

The dye was setting for 15 minutes. Ryan came over to check twice, which was really meticulous, and he gave me assuring nods that it's going well. Then it's time for a hairwash! I couldn't go into take pictures but the hairwash was gooood. I love this part of any hair appointment the most, because who don't love head massages?! Most salons don't put in much effort into it and concentrate on the washing, but I had an extended head massage that totally relaxed me. You would think that with so much going on - scrubbing and water jets, I wouldn't fall asleep but I did... They washed it at least 5 times to get all the dye out, and my hair was so fragrant and soft after that.

Blow drying, and thereafter, Ryan did curls on my hair. Although his English is not very good, he was really very nice and patient as we communicate, constantly asking if I'm okay with everything and if the blowdrying and curling process is pulling too hard at my roots (it totally wasn't). He was really gentle and gives my hair a wonderful result too! Everything was done in 90 minutes which is very efficient. I was expecting more like 2.5 hours like the usual, but The Comb really impressed me with their efficiency.

I love how my hair looks right now! The mahogany looks wonderful and my hair remains soft and gorgeous even after colour dye, without the treatment. I definitely look much better and this hair makeover lifts my whole look up. Will keep track of how my hair colour changes as I undergo a few more washes! My first experience with The Comb is a very positive impression.

Singapore: Timbre+

What's all the rage in April? Timbre+. Some people call it the hipster hawker centre - is this where our future is headed - others, the 'new one-north place with containers and stationary food trucks'. You should have seen this plastered all over your social media newsfeed by now, but I'm visiting it only when the hype has died down a bit more. Lucky, because otherwise, it would have probably even a notch more stuffy and crazily warm.

I tried visiting it with my significant other on a Sunday.
Bad move. Timbre+ is closed only on Sundays.
It does make for a cool photoshoot location though.

Glob sister and I swung by Timbre+ again for our meetup, and the first impression was really: sweat is pouring down me like it just rained. I don't normally sweat a lot and this is really insane humidity. Despite the huge fans installed everywhere, it was still really warm. But after a while, it was slightly better. Well, we are after all in Singapore.

I like the concept of it, it's generally really new-age, funky... there's character in it, and I like how its entry into the food scene makes it more vibrant. There are many stalls in Timbre+, you're bound to find something you like. Not everything is on the premium end like Dancing Crab, there are many usual type of hawker stalls selling your ban mian, chicken rice, fishball noodles and nasi padang too. I don't think it's my last time here, I'll definitely be back to check out how it looks like when there's music bands playing in here. But here goes my first time in Timbre+:

From the corner, there's Portico Platos where we got a plate of chicken paella for 6 bucks (not including additional 1 dollar for the tray - their idea of making people return trays). Plating and color presentation wise, pretty fantastic but its taste falters, which was quite disappointing. We were really late to be part of the lunch crowd at 2pm, but the dry and cold rice and chicken could hardly pass the mark. Granted the chicken was tender and generally flavourful, we both agreed it was average.

The fruit juice stall must be really popular in this oven, I got a green apple and yakult drink for $2.50. They have thirst-quenchers going at $1.50-2.50, with plenty of fruit juice combinations.

We also got the salted egg fries from Kushi at $8.50 which was pretty expensive in hindsight for what it is, essentially just fries with a salted egg sauce dip. Then again, we could sit there for ages and have finger food while chatting which is a major plus for us.

I obviously haven't tried a lot of the food at Timbre+ yet. Based on the choices I made, it has yet to impress me. It is a cool concept for sure, very different and interesting to be in, but the food really has to make up for the stuffiness in order to keep people coming. I would go back and try Fishball Story and a couple of other stalls for a second chance though, since I haven't had the full experience of Timbre+ yet.

Singapore: Laneige & Innisfree haul - 4 "holy grail" Korean skincare and makeup products with 1030am.

Skincare and makeup junkies out there, I'm sure Laneige and Innisfree aren't strangers to you. If you're not that crazy over skincare but want to find out more about these two ultimate "holy grail" brands and my review on their customer favourites' hot products - this is the review! I was kindly invited by Korean Skincare and Makeup Online Store, 1030am to browse their selections and found that they have stocked up only all the super popular items, which save you the trouble from finding out what's good for you, but simply what product you need. They absorb GST, offer cashback incentives, and $10 off for all new customers (min. spending $60). In this review I will be focusing on a few items that you can find on 1030am.

First up,

the Laneige Trouble Relief Toner!

The way to a simple and reliable skincare regime is a three-step mantra:

Cleanse, tone, moisturize!

After cleansing, toning is super important. It can be seemingly redundant or seen to be optional. It is a crucial step to ensuring your skin's pH is returned to its healthy level after cleansing, and at the same time give it a dose of ingredients meant to repair and restore your skin. I use the toner step to help remove any excess stubborn makeup residue not taken away by cleansing as the cotton pad is more flexible to use.

Thus, picking the right toner can be confusing too.

The one that I was using before I received this Laneige Trouble Relief Toner was the L’Oreal Paris White Perfect Whitening and Moisturizing Toner which I am not completely satisfied with because it gives a slightly sticky afterfeel, but I didn't want to throw the whole bottle away so I continued using it anyway. It works, but I'm keen to try the Laneige one because I have lots of other Laneige items and trust their range! 😊

Take a look at this pretty shamrock-green bottle, it has a striking colour which differentiates itself from the rest of my other skincare items. Easy to pick it out immediately especially after cleansing. Its packaging is very unique as well. But what's more important is its contents of course.

My skin has no major problems apart from the occasional small pimple that appears randomly every few days, probably because perfect skin every-day is a myth... or is it?! I've been using this toner for nearly a week now, and my skin has not seen any of those pimples anymore. Of course there are many factors that come into play, but this is the only change in my whole skincare routine so I'd think this has contributed a lot to ensuring my skin is well cared for.

How does this Laneige Trouble Relief toner prevent acne?
This  Toner is aimed at preventing acne by suppressing the growth of acne bacteria to prevent the inflammation of clogged pores and formation of papules. It contains the extract of Hinoki Cypress Polysaccharide, which reduces the growth of acne-causing bacteria by suppressing the formation of biofilm on the skin where bacteria tends to grow.

Does it dry out my skin?
No it doesn't. It is meant to be a daily toner with natural alcohol content that gently exfoliates skin. I used to love alcohol-based toners because it gives such a clean feeling after, but it actually strips my skin of moisture, so this actually helps balance that.

Ingredients
Water, Alcohol, Glycerin, Betaine, PEG/PPG-17/6 Copolymer, Glyceryl Polymethacrylate, Chamaecyparis Obtusa Water, Acetyl Glucosamine, Phenoxyethanol, Bis-PEG-18 Methyl Ether Dimethyl Silane, Butylene Glycol, PEG-60 Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Propanediol, Cellulose Gum, Glyceryl Caprylate, Carbomer, Tromethamine, Disodium EDTA, Phenoxyethanol, Fragrance, Sodium Hyaluronate, Beta-Glucan, Ethylhexylglycerin, Disodium EDTA

How to use
- Use every morning and night after cleansing.
- Remove moisture from the face, wet a cosmetic cotton pad with approximately 1ml (about 2.5cm in diameter), and gently wipe skin.
- Use gentle sweeping motions from the center of the face and out.

This is going into my regular skincare routine definitely.

Next, I will be reviewing the BB cushion I've been using for the past two years - the much raved Laniege BB Cushion SPF 50 PA+++!

For foundation and makeup base, I usually alternate between the Face Shop CC Cream (which is another product that many of my friends use) and the Laneige BB Cushion. The usage instructions are very different, so it depends on how I feel that day. I use the CC Cream because I like its pump mechanism as well - each has their own pros and cons.

Why I prefer the BB Cushion
The good thing about the BB cushion is that it is much more hygienic due to the remote application that doesn't require fingers, the little tailor-made puff picks up product from the cushion. The puff has antibacterial air cell properties and allows the formula to glide onto skin evenly without clots and cools skin since it does not absorb moisture.

What I was worried about the BB Cushion
Due to its instruction of usage, I thought that the BB Cushion wastes a lot of product because it goes through two 'sponges', and I didn't think it could last me a long time. Every time I have to press the puff into the BB cushion, I feel like I couldn't get enough product out. So that was a little troublesome and takes some getting used to. Considering I use the BB Cushion about 30-40% of the time for the past two years (I set a makeup base almost everyday), it is still surprisingly going strong.

I didn't use it that much in the beginning because I didn't like the application method but it did grow on me. I preferred to use my fingers, but now it is easier after I started using a beauty blender, which works similarly.

Check out my arsenal of Laneige BB Cushions. I am a convert! I am currently still using my first Laneige BB Cushion of the pushBUTTON collection (right most). Which means they can probably last me for the next few years... They have refills too, which means you don't have to keep buying the entire product.

Now to demonstrate what I do with it... another reason why I am growing into it - it's super fast in blending in, I can cut down my makeup time quite a bit with this. Moreover, it evens out my skin tone without looking like I put on a lot of makeup.

Here is me in no.21, slightly darker than my original skin tone so I got no.11 as well to try, but I'll open it when I'm done with this... so maybe reviewing it next time to see how it goes. It has a smooth finishing and adheres to my skin perfectly, nicely done. Apparently, the skin’s surface temperature will drop 4 degrees Celsius immediately after application and allows a 12-hr color longevity effect which I can vouch for because I never felt any discomfort or dissatisfaction with my makeup every time I use this. It is a good and reliable companion for a makeup base.

LANEIGE Trouble Relief Toner 200ml and BB Cushion SPF50 + With Refill retails for $69 on 1030am. Note if you're a first time customer, you get $10 off for purchases above $60, so you can buy this whole set at $59. Super worth it because the BB cushion itself already retails at $59 in Sephora stores.

---

Moving on, it's the Korean skincare sensation brand - INNISFREE.

INNISFREE It's a real squeeze mask!!!

In Singapore, Innisfree stores are basically been ransacked mad by girls and guys alike because it is said to be super good and effective for your skin. I am equally intrigued - are they really that good? I give their masks a go... Masks, there are too many of them out there in the market, it almost seem like any of them would do. What about masks from this well-loved brand?

Mask up after cleansing and toning (with the Laneige Trouble Relief toner ;))!
Here I am using the Innisfree It's real squeeze mask (Strawberry). To me, this is not a fancy mask, it's very basic and straight forward, it is the sort that you stock up in the hundreds so you can mask up once every week. It has a good fit, not overly nourishing, good enough for a 15-minutes skin boost (after 20 minutes it is nearly almost dry). The after-effect is that my skin feels really pumped up and well-hydrated. It's not the best mask, but it is certainly value for money. 1030am has over 10 flavours of the mask here at $1.70 each.

---

This is the product that has been flying off shelves in Innisfree stores - Super Volcanic Pore Clay Mask!

This volcanic mask is au naturel, with a "4 Free System", referring to no mineral oils, non-animal raw materials, no artificial flavor, no imidazolidinyl urea. It has excellent sebum adhesion using Jeju volcanic minerals, allowing powerful skin purification to clean inside of pores.

Is it really that powerful? Let's see..

This is the application process. Instructions to apply to the entire face after cleansing and toner except your eyes and lips. Rinse gently with warm water after 15 minutes.

So this is the 15 minutes waiting process... during the first 5 minutes, it dried up really quickly, resulting in almost a clay and smooth hardened layer over my face. It is recommended to use it 1-2 times per week and please adhere to the 15 minutes as advised!

This is me immediately after washing it off! My face feels strangely refreshed and lifted, given that there are no 'exfoliation' or scrubbing effect by the mask, nor peel-off.

For an unnecessarily close-up composite image of before and after - completely bare faced. This is the first time I am trying the Volcanic Pore Mask and certainly not my last, it works wonderfully to clear pores to smoothen out my skin. The whole tub is also very substantial, I only used probably around 1% of the entire tub for one time. 1030am retails this Super Volcanic Pore Clay Mask (200ml) at $27. The official website sells the 100ml one at $21, so yes, if you are looking for this fantastic deal, it's right here.

Celebrating PUTIEN's Duo Tou Clams Festival - 7 Clam Dishes

$

The rise of PUTIEN
Not just your run-of-the-mill Chinese chain restaurant, PUTIEN is a homegrown brand that began as a coffee shop in Kitchener Road in 2000. It was founded by Fong Chi Chung, who was born in Fujian, China and thereafter moved to Singapore to pursue diploma in Arts. He decided to launch Putien initially because he really missed his hometown's cuisine and decided to recreate the same tastes here in our sunny island! That was how it began, but thereafter PUTIEN's success and meteoric expansion to 24 outlets internationally is due to one reason: Fong's determination to use the best ingredients for all their dishes.

PUTIEN Duo Tou Clams Festival
This is what we see and taste for their launch of PUTIEN Duo Tou Clams Festival! I know that many people have the feeling that clams aren't delicious or are just strange, but PUTIEN totally proves my belief that 'there are no natural ingredients that taste bad, it's a matter of freshness and skill prepared'. Get ready to change your impression of clams here with their amazing 6cm succulent meaty goodness of clams encased in golden shells air-flown freshly from Duo Tou Village. Here are the 7 clam dishes to impress you:

Steamed PUTIEN Clams with Minced Garlic
This is a perfect family-friendly starter, a classic cooking style that will cater to everyone across all ages. These clams are steamed lightly with minced garlic, spring onions and chilli. The minced garlic is especially worth mentioning - Chef explained that they had specially treated it such that it does not leave a garlicky aftertaste in your mouth, even though you do enjoy the taste with the clams. At the end of the meal, there was not a hint of garlic lingering.

$20.90 (S); $31.90 (M)

Steamed PUTIEN Clam with Wine
The clams are stuffed generously in the porcelain white bowl, steamed upright with traditional Huadiao Chinese wine. Compared to the first dish, this brings out much more of the pure taste of clams - a true test that allows diners to completely enjoy its premium quality. The goodness of the clams were also steeped in the soup, making it especially sweet and delicious!

$20.90 (S); $13.90 (M)

Stir-fried PUTIEN Clams with Ginger and Spring Onion
This dish is reminiscent of many other Chinese dishes, but what's different about using clams is that its freshness and its natural sweetness actually elevates the quality of the other elements as well. If you'd love to taste the succulent essence of the clams, this is another chance!

$20.90 (S); $31.90 (M)

PUTIEN Clam Omelette
This dish is the most 'local' way of enjoying clams in Duo Tou Village where these clams were harvested from, done in a healthy and delicious manner with lesser salt and oil. The seafood element does reminded us of oyster omelettes. It is refreshing to enjoy omelette in this different manner, though I wasn't a big fan as I found that this discounted the wonderful taste of the clams.

$20.90 (S); $31.90 (M)

Baked PUTIEN Clams served on Hotplate
I'd always list which dish is my favourite - and if I have to pick, it'll definitely be this! Other than how gorgeous it looks in the pearly white bed of sea salt, I went starry-eyed with how purely fresh and juicy the clams were in this. According to Chef, the best way to eat it is to first remove the clam from its shell - it slips off so easily - and dip it into the sea salt. The succulent salt-baked clams tantalize our taste buds so much, it almost felt like we are tasting the oceans. Absolutely delicious and such indulgence for this one.

$20.90 (S); $31.90 (M)

PUTIEN Clams Soup With Toufu Meatballs
For a comforting rendition of clams, we had it in a traditionally prepared version as well, with the star ingredients boiled with an assortment of cauliflower, snow peas and toufu meatballs to highlight its natural sweetness. The toufu meatballs are made in-house. The soup is the best - remember the steamed clams steeped in a bowl of Chinese wine? This is very similar, because of the natural sweetness of the clams, the soup became very tasty as well - drink it to the very last drop!

$20.90 (S); $31.90 (M)

Salted Spicy PUTIEN Clams
Crisp and lightly battered with spring onions and diced chilli, this is a dish perfect on its own or complemented with beer. I like how thin the batter is and the clams remain juicy within the fried encasing. At this point, I was truly more surprised and impressed by the number of delicious ways they incorporated the clams. In fact, each of them has its own strengths that make them so different.

$20.90 (S); $31.90 (M)

PUTIEN prides itself on serving characteristically light, down-to-earth food that will impress the elders and yet delicious dishes that harness the goodness from fresh ingredients they have chosen. It is no wonder that they received numerous dining and business awards, including Michelin Guide Hong Kong Macau 2016 BIB GOURMAND RESTAURANT Award among many others. PUTIEN is the choice for many for their usual family dinners as well.

Celebrate PUTIEN's Duo Tou Clams Festival with PUTIEN - these 7 Clam dishes are available exclusively from 15 April to 31 August 2016.

12 apps you should download before going to China + bonus tip for Android users

$
0
0

Embarking on a trip to a new country is always fun and exciting. Good preparation work can help you avoid some of the potential pitfalls and problems along the way - especially when going to China. Why is China being singled out? This country is altogether a different creature when it comes to technology, connectivity and the digital age. Google, Facebook and Instagram are banned. This fact would only sink in when you realize that a huge part of your information bank comes from these sources. This means:
No Google Maps for your directions
No Google for random questions you have along the way (what's the best SIM card?)
No Facebook pages to check out the ratings of shops and restaurants
No Instagram to see the cool location tags that people go to.
For Android users, no Play Store to download any apps when you're there.
😨

Don't fret yet,
because here is a list of all the 12 apps that will keep you well covered for your trip to
China.
💁 💁 💁 💁 💁 💁

Preparation work starts days before you fly off. Don't wait till you're at the airport before you start downloading them because some of them take quite some time to set up!

1. Baidu Maps 百度地图

What is it?
This is your replacement app for Google Maps. Google Maps is essentially useless because it does not have accuracy within China boundaries so your best bet will be Baidu Maps.

(+) Like Google Maps, Baidu Maps have directions for walking, public transport, and by car, including the duration of time estimated for each route.

(-) If you can't read Chinese words, it will be difficult to navigate as the road names are all in its original Chinese names. Plot your directions beforehand while you still have access to Google maps (which has the names in hanyupinyin / romanized).

2. Baidu GPS 百度导航

What is it?
Do not make the rookie mistake that I did of downloading Baidu GPS thinking it is Baidu Maps. They are 2 different apps. Baidu GPS is a strictly-GPS app for driving directions.

(+) Baidu GPS is good for travellers who intend to rent and self-drive around. It has audio instructions, traffic conditions (vital for traffic-laden cities like Beijing), and offline maps.

(-) You need to download the locality maps in advance for Baidu GPS for it to work offline. This takes up a lot of storage space in your phone, but it is a good backup in case your SIM card runs out of credit or in rare places without connectivity.

3. Baidu

What is it?
You can download the app specially for your search engine choice. You can access Baidu through your browser apps, but if you don't like to keep so many windows open on your browser, get this app! Other than Baidu, com, there's also Sohu.com and Sogou.com. They work similarly.

(+) No Google, but yay for Baidu!

(-) If you can't type in Chinese, you are limited to certain search results which would not be as accurate or informative as the 'local search results' which are often articles or forums in Chinese. Nothing you can do about this unless you learn Chinese beforehand... or if you have this app:

4. Pleco Dictionary

What is it?
Pleco Dictionary is the must-have dictionary and translation app. Even native speakers like us had trouble reading some of the words around - your language skills will be put to the ultimate test. Pleco Dictionary helps to translate Chinese characters for you and tells you how to read them when you 'copy' the character onto the app.

5. Dianping 大众点评

What is it?
Dianping is the biggest review app in China. You can use it to find out the best cafes/restaurants, massage parlours, karaoke lounges/ cinemas, tourist attractions, beauty salons... and more. It is driven by user-generated content and ratings, but there are some advertised placements as well.

(+) If you've done close to zero research on the city you're going, you can use Dianping for a generally reliable review app by the locals. There are many toggles to narrow down your search: distance from you (especially useful when you're dog-tired from walking), most recommended, price, popularity, environment, service, and more. There are also discounts for many restaurants and cafes (but only applicable if you have an Alipay/ Zhi Fu Bao account).

(-) The available list is not exhaustive nor extensive enough, there are many places that are not ranked. But this app is good enough for what it's worth.

6. WeChat - and set up your WeChat wallet if you can

What is it?
WeChat is the China equivalent of Facebook, Whatsapp, and Browser app all rolled into one.

(+) They are big on QR code scans - you can get discounts, free gifts, perks and bonuses for scanning a QR code at their shop. What scanning does is that it makes you follow their Subscription Account on WeChat (similar to 'liking' their page on Facebook). QR codes also manifest itself in many ways, including at tourist attractions to help you understand more about the place, for more product information. This is the primary reason why WeChat will be useful for a traveller like you.

(+) Moreover, WeChat is the number one social media app that Chinese people use. If you want to keep in touch with anyone you met along the way (networking on the go), offer to 'add their WeChat'. You can add by searching for their user ID or scanning their QR code.

(+) You can use your WeChat wallet for cash-free transactions. The catch is that you need someone with an existing WeChat wallet to help deposit some money in it first to activate it if you're not a local. Not a big deal if you have wads of cash.

(-) WeChat gets lonely if you have no friends on it 😔

7. Uber

What is it?
Taxi-hailing app.

(+) Uber is the way of life of the younger generation in China, and it is very much used for taxi-hailing. You can attempt to flag down on the streets but it is more expensive and unpredictable. Don't forget to use your own promo code (of your original account) to enjoy RMB10 discount!

(-) You need to get a China number and a China bank card before you can use this.

8. Didi Dache

What is it?
Another taxi-hailing app.

(+) Apparently Didi Dache has more discounts than Uber, around 4.5%.

(-) You need to get a China number and a China bank card before you can use this.

9. MetroMan/ Metro China Subway

What is it?
An app that plans your subway journey. Depending which city you are in, the metro network can be fairly easy or downright confusing.

(+) Tells you what's the fastest way to transfer lines from point A to B.

10. China Trains

What is it?
An app that tells you the train journey timings from city to city.

(+) There are numerous high-speed rail trains D/G/Z/T/K lines running everyday, and this helps to keep you in check on what are the timings available. This should only act as a guide.

(-) For foreigners, you have to head down to the train station's ticket buying booth with your passport, and buy a physical ticket from the counter. Do this in advance (at most 3 days, at least half a day) especially for long-haul rides.

11. Alipay/ Zhi Fu Bao

What is it?
These are online cash wallets. You will encounter many places that ask you if you want to pay by Alipay/ Zhi Fu Bao / WeChat wallet (wei-xin).

(+) At some places, you can enjoy discounts if you use Alipay/ Zhi Fu Bao/ WeChat wallet because of the ease from cashless transactions. Another plus point is that you can disguise as a local.

(-) Setting Alipay as a foreigner is a pain and a whole lot of system roundabouts you need to go through. It is not really worth the trouble - the easier alternative is to set up your WeChat wallet when your friends 'gift you' money red packets.

12. ExpressVPN

What is it?
Your escape from the great firewall of China.

(+) It means you have Google, Facebook and Instagram.

(-) USD$12.95 per month.

Tip Bonus for Android Users:
As Play Store (under Google) is also banned, you cannot download apps that you need but have not downloaded. Search on Baidu for the apk file of the app (Baidu search:"App Name + .apk") and you can download the app as well. Do note that this means your phone will be vulnerable to viruses or trojan horses that you might accidentally download instead.

Pretty glass jars for your room or office decor.

Where to get terrariums in Singapore

I developed an affection for terrariums. And there is no turning back. A huge part of my table's real estate has been dedicated to them, and they spark immense joy in my life. In Singapore, terrariums have become increasingly popular as a room decor, gifts and even creative alternatives for flowers!

There are two ways of getting a terrarium in Singapore:

For those who think they do not have so much artistic talent, you can choose to get a ready-made one.. otherwise, you can consider making a terrarium yourself to express yourself and impress others!

Where to get terrariums in Singapore

We went for one workshop conducted by Ecoponics to make our own terrariums! They are able to conduct workshops that are extremely easy to follow. The host of the workshop put us at ease and helped us along every step of the way, ensuring that our terrariums are built correctly. A quick word on China today

A reflection after my graduation journey.

I am finally back from the land where all major social media platforms and Google is banned.. made zero attempts at climbing over the great Chinese firewall, therefore I have absolutely no credit to complain about this self-imposed digital detox. This is my graduation trip to a cluster of Chinese cities (Shanghai, Suzhou, Hangzhou, Beijing), most likely the only one before I embark on the next important part of my life (also known as "the working life").

What is China like?

A lot of people have asked me why I decided on China for my graduation trip, questions loaded with a lot of trepidation and assumption of this country. If we were to look at a country simply based on the international news reports and media impressions on it, we are really only getting a one-dimensional idea of what it is. Tainted milk powder, man-eating escalators, irresponsible hit-and-run drivers, dishonest and uncultured people, and a whole lot more of horror stories of danger. It definitely fueled a lot of my doubt, but at the same time, I wanted to see and judge for myself. What is China like? Past and present, I've studied about it in theory and papers across modules, but nothing beats walking the ground and seeing the place itself. (Though I would very much wished I had stayed longer to really observe the locals in their daily lives)

A fellow train passenger told me that the cities I've been represent the most developed parts of China and to really fully understand what China is, I've got to visit the 老少边穷 (the old, the minority, the areas near the country's borders, and the poor). This idea is echoed by some of my new Chinese friends. The cities that I managed to visit this time are limited but just based on these, one thing is for sure - China is massive, and the people in this country can vary so much even across and within these developed (mega)cities. This trip definitely sparked a further interest in me, and a deeper curiosity to see what the locals consider 'the true colours of China'.

A thoroughly networked country

China have their own set of social media platforms and digital apps (those that actually have VPN is a select few) - WeChat, Baidu/ Baidu Maps, Alipay, etc and they demonstrate how social media should work to their benefit. Precisely because they are barred from other disorganized and fragmented platforms, they are able to create a cohesive network. Everything is tightly-weaved into their business systems of small to medium to large businesses, with a centralized platform that maximizes the function of the QR code. I was really impressed by this. They have managed to make technology work for them. The world laughed when the Chinese government started banning Facebook, but right now, it is certainly reaping in amazing results.

Considering how geographically big it is, I was equally fascinated by the pace at which the physical networks have been built. Every city has a sprawling metro system within the city centre, with lines in the works and the system continuously being expanded. Then there's the 高铁 (high speed rail train) which goes above 300km/h - globally it is the busiest operating system at over 19,000km, with destinations to the borders of China. Despite the train stations being quite a nightmare to be at (attribution to the passengers, not the service), the organization of the high traffic flow of passengers operates like clockwork. With the quality of transportation as the backbone of every country, China and her cities are definitely developing at a remarkable rate, made possible by the resources and human capital they have.

Closing note

China is not without fault; I went with low expectations, a bagful of paranoia, and complete mental preparation for pushy service staff, dodgy cab drivers, queue-cutting aunties, spit, smoke and haze, and of course, eye-popping toilets. The cities have exciting infrastructure development, and are enthusiastically improving how civilized the people are. Loudspeakers in metro stations call for passengers to disembark before boarding, and not to rush on escalators... on replay. Officials with red sashes order people to follow 'rules of civilization', and signs are pasted everywhere to remind people not to engage in acts of discarding bodily waste anywhere. It is a little jarring, but it could just work.

A people of 5000 years of civilization, a force to be reckoned with.

It is the perfect city getaway. Celebrate Italian Republic Day with June’s cocktail specials - Zafferano's bar team has concocted two specials to tickle your tastebuds. Choose between a refreshing Bellini or a mildly spicy Gingertini.

A tough call to make between the homemade ‘cavatelli’, fresh seafood in white wine sauce and tomatoes - pasta made in-house, with perfect al-dente and qq texture that is impossible not to love it! The beef ‘tagliata’ with celery root, sautéed artichokes, and drizzled over with veal jus, on the other hand, is a juicy platter of grilled and carved beef that won over the entire table. I'd say, take both.

Dessert is undoubtedly the one that everyone looks forward to, and Zafferano does not disappoint at all! If you prefer a less heavy dessert, the freshly-made ice-cream and gelato will certainly be your sweet ending to this wonderful dinner.

Singapore: Bugis & Kampong Glm - Your Locality Cheat Sheet

A glimpse of past and present of the Singaporean Malay culture

To see Singapore as she is today and in the past, start with Bugis and Kampong Glam. Bugis is a neighbourhood that has gotten its name from the ethnic Buginese people that has a long history in Southeast Asia. It is now defined by the biggest pedestrian street market and shopping malls. Kampong Glam, on the other hand, is an enclave for the Malay community in Singapore that has since thrived with cultural, religious, and retail activity. These two adjoined districts have undergone generations of transformations and under target for criticisms of gentrification. However, that is inevitable with Singapore's determination for development and the effects of modernization. Today, this area attracts an international crowd and the younger generations of Singaporeans who are headed to this part of the island to soak up the 'hipster' cafe scene and its rustic charm.

Hello there, I'm Amie! I'm born and raised in Singapore all my life.
In the past 23 years, I have explored many different parts across the island and am always on a quest to discover more about it. There is no city guide that I can be more confident of writing than a guide on my home country, Singapore. I love travelling other places, exploring the local food, places, cultures and meeting new people too. Travelling the 'local way' is definitely my favourite way of seeing the world. This travel guide to Singapore is intended to help you understand and experience this lovely country the 'local' way. No more safe tourist bubbles, you're now a traveler.

Explore this quaint district with your locality cheat sheet:

The best way to explore Bugis & Kampong Glam is definitely by foot! Begin your day from Bugis MRT station and first, check out Bugis Street, the biggest pedestrian indoor street market in Singapore.

What it means to us locals: Bugis Street forms the bulk of teenage memories for most of us 90's kids! The 'fashionable' shopping here was seen to be super cool in our secondary school days. It has revamped to include a Korean-style inspired wing upstairs.

What you can expect: The first floor is now full of street food, fruit juices, male and female apparel and touristy souvenirs. If you're looking to do some cheap apparel shopping, head on to the second and third floors for a quieter shopping experience. A word of advice - cheaper versions of the same pieces are usually found on the first floor, and the quality of these clothes is often proportionate to its price. Most of these clothes are catered to a youth crowd.

Head on over to the culturally rich side of Bugis, towards Kampong Glam and take a stroll down Bali Lane, Haji Lane, Arab Street. No prizes for guessing but my favourite has to be Haji Lane!

What it means to us locals: Home to hipsters and awesome place to be for bar-hopping at night!

What you can expect: Present-day Haji Lane has been populated by boutique stores selling unique apparel and bicycles, tattoo shops, bars and cafes. The walls of its backlanes are full of graffiti, and it would be hard to resist snapping a picture or two here. As the night falls, music bars bring the street alive - booze and dance away!

For a tour of one of the most prominent religious buildings in Singapore - the Sultan Mosque (Masjid Sultan), join a free guided tour around the mosque at the designated timings. It was reconstructed in 1932. The new building costing $200,000 was completed four years later. The mosque with its unique architecture is still the pride of Singapore Muslims today. Recognizable by its iconic golden dome, this mosque has been serving the Muslim community since 1824.

What you can expect: A deeper understanding on Islam and how our Muslim friends conduct their religious practices here.

Mon - Sun: 1000 - 1200; 1400 - 1600
Fri: 1430 - 1600

These are the most important landmarks that you should have seen if you're around this area, but go explore away. If you're looking for a quick 'authentic' bite, here are some locals favourites around the area - first up, it has to be Hill Street Tai Hwa Pork Noodles.

The most underrated locals' favourite food has to be bak chor mee (we like to call it bcm for short). What is bak chor mee, you might ask - it is minced meat noodles along with pork lard, vinegar and chilli! You don't normally see bak chor mee on Singapore's 'must-eat' food lists as it is overshadowed by the more flamboyant laksas and chicken rice. But this is undoubtedly one of the dishes that we eat on a regular basis. One of the very best can be found at Tai Hwa Pork Noodles, with a queue that go up to 45 minutes.

Complete your local experience: The noodles uncle's a busy man and need to know your noodles preference quickly. Order like a pro - be prepared as you would need to first explain you are eating here (chi-de) or buying it as takeaway (da-bao). Then, you will need to choose between 'mee pok' (fat noodles) or 'mee kia' (thin noodles).

Note that only cash is allowed here.

Quite a walk away towards Little India (another exciting district to be explored, you will find Sungei Road Laksa, a time-honoured hawker stall that has since inspired many other spin-offs.

One of the other 'must-try' dishes in Singapore is laksa, sour and spicy coconut based soup with rice noodles along with fishcake, prawns, bean sprouts, and more. It is one of my favourite local dishes! If you're looking for 'the representative laksa' in Singapore, unfortunately, you will be disappointed. There are too many versions of the laksa and certainly all of them are very different - but Sungei Road Laksa would be the perfect initiation to trying this dish. Rather than a city that never sleeps, Singapore is a city that never stops eating. Observe how people are eating everywhere regardless of the time of the day. That is probably why even at two in the afternoon, the folks at Sungei Road Laksa are still super busy with their duties at the stall - replenishing the charcoal, scooping out delicious laksa into the pink bowls. At $3 a bowl, it is certainly a treat.

If the heat is getting to you but you don't want to miss out on your Singapore experience, Dong Po Colonial Cafe will be a perfect initiation to understand afternoon tea in yesteryear Singapore. Get ready for some cakes - not just any cakes, but some really old-school ones that previous generations have enjoyed as snacks or as wedding favours. Don't miss out on their Good Old Lemon Puffs and Lamington Orange Cakes.

Complete your local experience: Other than enjoying their cakes, order a kopi (coffee) or teh (milk tea) - theirs are quite thick and fragrant, just the perfect pick-me-up.

The ultimate fish soup for the soul can be found at the oldest fish head steamboat establishment in Singapore, Nan Hwa Chong Fishboat. This 88-year old restaurant travels far and wide only by word of mouth, providing charcoal-fired steamboats which gives soups that full-bodied flavour that is of a different league altogether. Nan Hwa Chong Fishboat's soup base is made of original recipes, born out of 5-hours of preparation and simmering with the essence of fish bones and other ingredients that remained hush-hush. This umami fish soup is very comforting, delicious and addictive. Don't worry, it is fully air-conditioned upstairs for you to escape the heat and enjoy the soup in comfort.

Inventive desserts is the name of the game for Brother Bird, with soft salted egg mochi donuts and soft serve. One of the kind in Singapore, these stuff are what dreams are made of. Ditch your diet plans already if you haven't (come on you are in food paradise Singapore)!

If you are looking for some cold desserts, you will have your solution at Dessert First and Ah Chew Desserts. These are located opposite one another and are close competitors along the street. Ah Chew Desserts is the more popular one among locals but I would say Dessert First is just as good.

Complete your local experience: Are you ready for your virgin experience with durian yet? If you're worried about diving straight into the real thing, Dessert First might just have the alternative for you that is easier to stomach - Durian Snow Ice.

Being one of the up-and-rising halal cafes in town, The Lab Cafe oversees a predominantly Muslim crowd in its 30-seater space. Its popularity is evident by the queue at seven in the evening. Their desserts rest on their cake displays, including paleo lemon pies with honey meringue and sea salt brownies that are gluten-free and grain-free without refined sugar. German bretzels are high on their list as entrees with the choice of salted caramel or chocolate dip. If you're feeling more than only peckish, The Lab offers many more entrees and salads for your choosing. The best part? The food there is priced very affordably, with the large serving of their signature must-try Heisenburger.

Recharge your energy at Wonderland Cafe along Haji Lane. This fairytale floral themed cafe will have you swooning at its interior and cakes in a jiffy! Drink up some warm calming tea and eat a slice of lovely Strawberry Shortcake.

The cafe that has the vote of confidence of foodies in Singapore goes to Hyde & Co. with delicious fusion cuisine on its menu. If you are ready to rock and roll with some creative inventions such as nasi lemak risotto, and chilli crab pasta, Hyde & Co. is the place to be.

The best Vietnamese restaurant in Singapore goes to Mrs Pho. A simple bowl of Pho Bo Tai done right - with silky smooth pho noodles and soup that is properly rich with its sweet meaty goodness, yet clear and so aromatic. Order some Cha Gio - fried spring rolls at a dollar per pop wonderfully tasty and legit.

Nobuya is one of the more authentic Japanese izakayas in Singapore where everyone has to drink (it is an actual rule). Order the Harushika which is both exquisite and divine to enjoy alongside the dishes at Nobuya - such as the Shake Gohan and the Ika Shoyu Yaki.

A tantalizing combination of garlic, ginger and spice soaking through juicy crab meat - that is the essence of Hong Kongers' favourite dish - the spicy crab (避风塘炒蟹). Many respectable dining establishments offer this spicy crab dish, however, it is recommended to enjoy this spicy crab dish at Mr Ray Seafood Restaurant together with many of its other excellent dishes such as its Sea Salt Prawns (海鹽手插蝦) and 3D Broccoli (立體3D芥蘭), a place well-loved by locals and celebrities alike!

28 Fun Things We Did in Bangkok Thailand & Travel Tips!
Name the place that Singaporeans love visiting the most: it's Bangkok.
Or Krung Thep in Thai.
At any one point, you'd have at least a friend who is about to go there, just came back, or is currently frolicking in Chatuchak for the weekend. It's almost like a garden in our backyard.
Everyone loves going to Bangkok even in 2016 - for its shopping, for its food, for its kickass massages. And for those who haven't, would be curious about what Bangkok has that keeps people from going there time and again.
Bangkok is a fascinating metropolis that has so many surprises at every corner, and there seemed to be a crazy lot of things to do. When they say you can be done visiting Bangkok in three days, don't believe them at all! There are so many fun, interesting and off-the-beaten-path things to do that will get your heart racing - you'll at least need to stay for a month to really experience the city fully.
Whether you are planning for a weekend itinerary, or a month-long, you can take a leaf out of the 28 things we did in Bangkok Thailand (& other travel tips) just in 5 days:
Here is a map of all the 28 things that will be featured in this post!

28 Fun Things We Did in Bangkok Thailand & Travel Tips!

1. Did a foot massage at Chatuchak Market

What is a Bangkok trip without a massage? Or massages! There is no shame in indulging yourself, after all you probably did a lot of walking at Chatuchak Weekend Market! The foot and shoulder massages here are essentially basic, fuss-free, value-for-money, and such a sweet relief for tired muscles. Customers are shrouded away from the shopping crowd by translucent plastic sheets. We could see right outside for some people-watching, or just close our eyes and melt away under the skillful masseurs' hands...

2. Dug into a seafood feast at Taling Chan floating market

If you want to visit a floating market on your short getaway to Bangkok, Taling Chan floating market would be your choice. It is not too far away - only 10km, which means you won't be spending too much time on the road. Yet this charming floating market has lots to see despite its small size, with a smattering of everything - flowers, handicraft, notebooks, fruit, street food and of course, seafood. It is said to be relatively less commercialized and touristic as compared to other floating markets. It was not too crowded even though there were other tourists around as well. At the end of this floating market, you will reach the harbour where you can choose to go on a boat ride. That's also where you'll get to dig into a seafood feast on the low tables right on the floating market! Don't pull any punches as you do. Eat those delicious prawns and fish with your bare hands to total gratification!

3. Got drunk on thai iced milk teas

The number one thing that I absolutely have nearly no self-control is: thai iced milk tea! I mean, how could you not... Every single time I see it, I just want to hold one cup in my hand. So much so I had to go to the hospital for getting an overdose on caffeine (that is a story for another day). But thai iced milk teas are absolutely must-have, here's one from Taling Chan floating market...

4. Scaled up one of Bangkok's stunning rooftop bars - Octave

And we thought the view from our airbnb apartment from the 16th floor gave us a good idea on how vast Thailand's capital city is, but no, to see Bangkok, go higher. On the 45th floor of Marriot Hotel Sukhumvit, Octave Rooftop Bar is one of the very best in the city for views with a nearly 360 degree vantage point all around. Drinks are certainly pricier than most places - but at least there's no cover charge and you're paying for the view too. 😳

5. Listened to a local band belt love songs at a live music bar restaurant

Thai romance films' theme songs stick in your head for a long time. You don't have to understand the language to appreciate their voices and melody of the song. The sweet romance songs from Thailand is one of the memorable international features about their culture, and the way to experience it was to listen to a local band! We were introduced to this amazing live music bar restaurant by our airbnb host, just a 5 minutes walk away. After a recent renovation, Indy's has been transformed into a trendy bar with an alfresco area for diners to chill outside. The live acoustic band plays every night between 8.30pm to 9.30pm with Thai and international songs.

6. ...while stuffing our faces with an authentic, scrumptious Thai dinner

All while tucking into this fantastic food. Being the first meal in Bangkok, it set the standards really high. The tom yum soup was very fragrant and rich in spices, a satisfying sour and spicy mix that will keep your tongue tingling. The pineapple fried rice and fried crab cakes totally hit the right notes as well! I only wished I could eat more to try all that Indy has to offer. Recommended place for an awesome Thai dinner!

7. Could not resist munching on some Khanom Bueang (Thai crepes)!

Thai crepes, or Kanom Bueang, is one of the popular street food dessert around Bangkok that we constantly spotted. It definitely appealed to the sweet tooth in me! A crispy brown crepe topped with foy thong, which could be a minced mixture of shredded coconut, shredded meringue of egg white and sugar. We tried this at Taling Chan floating market, but there were some at Chatuchak weekend market as well.

8. Indulged in a little coconut ice-cream treat 😍

Coconut is one of my favourite ice-cream flavours. And when at the land of coconut ice-cream, it would be absolutely blasphemous to skip this dessert! Not just as mere ice-cream scoops, peanut, red bean, corn and coconut jelly are some of the toppings that you can sprinkle atop!

9. Juiced up!

Based on annual mean temperatures, Bangkok is the hottest city in the world. Can you imagine that? That only makes juicing up much more satisfying... icy-cold watermelon, orange, carrot, mango fruit shakes - sometimes this city makes you believe that all the fruit juice in the world is right here too.

10. Pigged out on a sinful but delicious supper in one of the sois.

Hungry o'clock can strike any time, and when it happens in the middle of the night - it only means one thing: supper! From time to time, I will still think of this wonderful supper in Soi 38. I regret none of  the calories at all.

11. Launch into some cultural adventures of wat-hopping

Temple-visiting is one of the most recommended things to do around Bangkok but not all of these religious stops are interesting or worth going. For starters, the Grand Palace is one major tourist nest that will ruin any experience. These are the two wats that we really liked:

28 Fun Things We Did in Bangkok Thailand & Travel Tips!

Wai Traimit and Wat Pho.

Located at the beginning of Yaowarat road, Wai Traimit is a gorgeous white temple right in the heart of Chinatown. Wai Traimit also houses the largest Buddha made of solid gold in the world, which is a stunner to see.

Wat Pho (Temple of the Reclining Buddha), on the other hand, has a much larger temple complex with a 46m long reclining Buddha statue. It is impressive to witness as we walk around it solemnly. Home to nearly a hundred chedis, Wat Pho is also a place of education for both Bangkokians and visitors.

12. Explored the streets of Bangkok's Chinatown

Such is a dangerous affliction - if you've been to enough Chinatowns around the world, gradually you'd have a strange inclination to see every Chinatown in the world. And why not in Bangkok as well, where it is a different world: they explicitly demonstrate their love for jewellery stores, pawn shops and little mom-and-pop stores. It is easy to get lost in a reverie in here.

13. Prayed at Erawan Shrine

Erawan Shrine is a queer sight to behold within the city, surrounded by tall skyscrapers and glitzy malls at the Ratchaprasong intersection. This major Bangkok landmark is smaller than expected, yet it attracts streams of believers and visitors to it. As we entered, street vendors waved flower garlands, joss sticks and gold leaves at us, asking us to buy them. Many believe that their wishes will be especially granted at Erawan Shrine.

14. Perched on the roadside for some boat noodles...

My favourite type of meals are the most impromptu meals. Because they happen when I'm starving: like this bowl of boat noodles sold by a street hawker. It was not the most 'hygienic' looking stall around but when hunger and intuition call out to you, the only appropriate answer is to accept it. The result? Unforgettably satisfying!

15. When in Thailand, do a full body Thai luxury massage.

There are plenty of massage parlours around Bangkok, but if you want a certified good one with no 'special services' (y'know what I mean 💁), Health Land Spa is a decent one to go for and raved by many! A traditional Thai massage of 2 hours, the one we went for, is priced at 550 baht. The masseur was very skillful and professional! I remembered it being extremely enjoyable that I resisted falling asleep but eventually giving in anyway.

Do note that if you are planning to go to Health Land, you need to make an appointment at least 24 hours earlier to ensure you have a slot. They have 9 outlets. The one we went was at Asoke.

16. Shopped at Pratunam Mall...!

Pratunam Mall was to be honest, underwhelming. I guessed the heydays of this mall must have been over because what we saw could not justify the amount of raves that people gave it at all! Tourists were filling up the corridors, and the apparel in there were basics, uninspiring and expensive for what they were. I dug a bit and found some stuff I liked, but it didn't give me the shopping thrills that I had in Chatuchak. Oh and I got a beauty blender here too. But at least, Pratunam Mall, checked. 👌

17. Food trucks for lunch!

Lucky thing - we found these cool food trucks parked right outside Pratunam Mall. There were a couple of them, one of which is Tokyo Truck. We dug into some really good gyozas and rice bowls - I knew because I found it delicious even though I was dealing with some crazy nausea (see no.3).

18. Took an evening walk around Lumphini Park,

Witnessed locals running en masse!

One of the most surprising things that we saw how enthusiastic the locals were about exercising and jogging - some of them were still in their officewear! There were older folks too, and all of them were running in Lumphini Park as if there were a marathon event at 8 in the evening. It was a slice of Bangkok that was really different from the common touristic areas. Within Bangkok, Lumphini Park is the single largest park area spanning over half a million square metres big!

19. Cafehop to Rocket S12

I know cafehopping in Bangkok points you towards The Commons, but Rocket S49 and S12 used to be really popular as well. Probably S49 more so than S12, because of its amazing architecture and interior design, while S12 is much smaller and cozier. Their hipster menu selection includes hot chocolate served with a Ecuadorian cocoa stick, a large cup steamed milk, and a dollop whipped cream. When it was served, they had me in a heartbeat.

20. Looked out at the Chao Phraya river!

The Chao Phraya flows through nine cities, the most significant of which is Bangkok. Like most rivers, Chao Phraya played a significant role in the nurturing of human civilizations due to its abundance of fish and fertility. This view was from Mandarin Oriental, one of the most luxury elegant hotels in the city.

If you dream of cruising down Chao Phraya river while having your dinner, KKday is having a promotion for their luxury Princess Cruise which includes a buffet dinner and the river cruise for only SGD37 (original price SGD53.40 if you buy from official website):

21. Wolfed down the famous Shibuya Honey Toast at After You.
After You was probably there when people began flocking to Bangkok as their favourite weekend getaway. It has since become a staple stopover. I was just about to say 'how good can toast get' when I was proven wrong - oh my, it was really amazing. Now I understand why people go crazy over this!

22. Got addicted to Vita Milk!
When you think about soymilk in Thailand, it's Vita Milk! It is found in their 7-11s. It's a taste that I keep going back for, it's such a thirst-quencher on super hot days. Thank goodness we found this in Singapore as well! We had this repeatedly for the umpteenth time already - I still can't decide if I like Double Black, Original or Chocolate better.

23. Climbed across railway tracks.
Railway track otakus, if you're in search of a section of quiet railways tracks in Bangkok that you can climb around without much judgment - you can check out the Chuea Pleong Road section near Mae Nam Railway Station. We didn't go on it in search of railway tracks though - for the record we literally climbed over some tracks and trains because we were on the other side of the road.

24. Explored Nana district 😂
Delve deep into the underbelly of Bangkok - that is what Nana is famous for. I remember the major red-light district to be glitzy, messy, full of life, people, hawkers selling many random things on the streets, and of course lady-boys and hookers walking the streets. It's an eye-opening experience!

You might want to ask: is it dangerous to visit the Nana district?

I did feel like it was considerably rowdier around here. I hung onto my bag which was slung in front of me and did not take any photos as I passed by - some precautions that I took. There were no incidents that made me feel at risk. Guys would actually attract more attention.

25. Zip around the city on a motorbike...
What Bangkok traffic?
Going from place to place in Bangkok - say goodbye to cabs, tuk-tuks or walking. The surefire way to avoid the jam in Bangkok is to hop onto a motorbike! Other than how these motorbike riders are efficient in weaving in and out of traffic to beat the jam, it is simply exhilarating. Negotiate your fares - apparently it seems that there is a 'local' price and a 'tourist' price when it comes to motorbikes. It is almost the same price as a cab, but you get to your destination within half the duration!

28 Fun Things We Did in Bangkok Thailand & Travel Tips!

26. And on a tuk-tuk!

The tuk-tuk is the fun way to travel around. It certainly makes you feel special and you get to hear and feel the Bangkok traffic first-hand! Once is enough though, thank goodness we took it for a short distance, taking in the traffic fumes is no joke.

28 Fun Things We Did in Bangkok Thailand & Travel Tips!

27. Stumbled upon the 'slums' of Khlong Toei.

Khlong Toei is home to the biggest suburban 'slums' in Bangkok, and some of them live right on the railway tracks near Mae Nam. I only found out about this as I am writing this post, but we did stumbled upon this area when we were on our way to the BTS station. The largest and most 'local' wet market is also found in Khlong Toei - so if you are looking for a poverty-blighted district alongside budding enterprises and/or off-the-beaten track visit, this is the place to be.

28. Booked an airbnb with an awesome view

Airbnb is one of the ways to book your accommodation in Bangkok if you want something different from the usual hotels/hostels! You can get interesting views, meet amazing hosts that will tell you where to visit, and of course, preview the type of rooms that you want to live in on your holiday! There are many options on this platform at all price ranges.

There are of course many more amazing activities you can do in Bangkok to make it the most memorable holiday, but that's it from me for now. Tell me your Bangkok experiences in the comments box below, I would love to hear about them!

Till the next time 💖

See Singapore's Skyline, 360 Degree.

$

It was hard to believe.
Somewhere to see a gorgeous 360 degree view of cityscape of Singapore at a height for free.
Yes, it's possible, without having to pretend to go into a restaurant or bar to take a good look. I was so impressed by the entire layout and the generosity of telescopes available around the entire platform (it's not true that you have to pay for everything in Singapore).
It's time to grab a friend and impress them with this hidden gem:

Where, where!

At 56 floors above the ground, ION SKY on Orchard Road will give you amazing views in this quiet and sophisticated air-conditioned space. It made me feel like I'm amidst clouds with its sky-high views. No surprise because this is opened by the Cloud Observatory Club, with interesting bite-sized information or poems about clouds on some of the glass panels.

The ION SKY observatory is open from 3pm - 6pm daily. The last admission is at 5.30pm. It is completely free to enter. Weekday afternoons at 4pm are the perfect timing to go because it is extremely quiet and it feels like we had the entire place to ourselves.

How to go to ION SKY:
1. Take the lift up to 4th floor in ION Orchard at Lift Lobby A.
2. Look for ION Art Gallery.
3. Enter ION Art Gallery.
4. Find the lift in ION Art Gallery.

There will be personnel to lead you to the 56th floor at ION SKY.

Indicators to show where the key districts in Singapore are on the window panels.
The visibility is often very good on non-hazy days where you can see for miles and miles.

It is an amazing experience for both locals and tourists. You don't have to dine at Salt Grill & Sky Bar if you don't want to - the food there is highly raved (I haven't tried myself)!

Singapore: Flavours of Spain Cocktail Evening at Cosentino Asia

$
0
0

I was looking forward to this gastronomical Spanish dining demostration with Chef Edward Esmero. A group of us met in the live kitchen of Cosentino Asia for an amazing cocktail night of 'flavours of Spain'. At Cosentino, we also learnt more about this globally-renowned Spanish company that produces innovative surfaces for home and office design purposes.

Amuse Bouche | Sphere of Gazpacho

It's time to be wowed by Chef Edward's creativity right from the start.

He created a unique delicious mix of tomato, cucumber, Serrano ham and garlic version of gazpacho in sphere form. This is a refreshing twist to the classic Andalusian vegetable soup. It finishes in one explosive pop into the mouth!

Tapas | Ostras con Salsa de Escabeche

The first tapas that we enjoyed were big fat fresh oysters. Sitting proudly in their shells, these oysters were drizzled with a reduction of citrus escabeche and crispy shallots for a local twist.

Tapas | Coca de Escalivada

A toasted coca bread with a generous spread of roasted smoked eggplant, piquillo peppers, onion, olive oil and fresh herbs, topped with manchego cheese and balsamic reduction. Munch on this scrumptious tapas that is crispy on the outside and warm on the inside. I love how the eggplant was transformed to be so delicious with the smoky touch - I don't normally fancy eggplants much.

Tapas | Gambas al Ajillo

This is a charmer all around, everyone loved it unanimously. I remembered how richly tasty gambas is with its savoury and sour flavours with white wine, and I was looking forward to it so much! The tiger prawns were plump and juicy as well. I only wished it could be converted into a main course for me to enjoy to my heart's content.

Postre | Torta de Santiago

Dessert isn't going down without a surprise - we had an amazing mini galician cake of St. James, a traditional feature of the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage, a fluffy almond cake that was infused with lemon. It was such perfection to the lovely meal, especially with the texture of the cake that I fell in love with instantly. Pair it with the caramelized banana and vanilla ice-cream to finish. Chef Edward never disappoints.

Here, the MVP of the night:

Chef Edward Lim Esmero

Instagram: @chefedward34

He is the chef and co-owner of My Little Spanish Place (Bukit Timah and Boat Quay) and My Little Tapas Bar. I have been to My Little Tapas Bar and similarly wowed by his creations. He is very passionate about cooking and creating new recipes out of the norm. Look out for the upcoming Torta de Santiago almond cake that will be in new menus soon, don't miss out on this amazing creation.

We were also introduced to the ultrabrilliant Dekton surfaces that can withstand fire, heat, abrasion, scratches, ice, thawing, stains (even tumeric and curry). You can use this material to make kitchen tabletops, fireplaces, perimeter walls and more. If you are interested in finding out more about this material, check out their Facebook page here:

Scratch-proof! Look - you can even cut on it and Dukton is completely resistant to these cuts.

Which reminds me - you can cat-proof your house with this material too.

It is UV-resistant as well, which means you can use it for outdoor purposes such as swimming pool tiles and barbeque pit areas.

Singapore: Hana Japanese Restaurant: New Tempura Omakase Set Menu 2016

Hana Singapore Restaurant: New Tempura Omakase Set Menu 2016

Like many quality Japanese restaurants, Hana is discreetly located in one of the quieter shopping malls in Orchard. With elegant dark tones and classy background music, you will first notice the open bar in this modern Japanese restaurant. Hana is particularly popular with guests looking for an indulging but affordable omakase experience. This time, we were introduced to a few of Hana's famous items, the truffle Sōmen with Sakura Ebi and Santen Chirashi before unveiling their latest tempura omakase set.

Hana Singapore Restaurant: New Tempura Omakase Set Menu 2016

Truffle Sōmen with Sakura Ebi ($15++)

This modern creation by Hana is truffle-infused cold noodles, an instant crowd pleaser. The truffle flavour is strong yet not overpowering, as we agreed that it was very delicious, especially with the crunchy Sakura ebi bits and large juicy crab roe.

Santen Chirashi ($28+)

The moment this was set upon the table, all eyes were set on it. This well-executed three-item chirashi is scrumptious and should be enjoyed from the least flavourful to the most, starting from Truffle Kanpachi to Kaisen Bara Chirashi and then to Aburi Salmon Cheese. Unable to resist this tasty dish from its pink rice, to the fresh juicy sashimi, we scoffed it down immediately. The seafood soup is served from a pretty ceramic teapot and warmed our stomachs nicely.

Due to limited stomach space, we didn't get to try the Lobster Fried Rice which is highly raved by the other foodies present during this gathering.

And of course, sake!

Onto the highlight of our tasting: the brand new, value-for-money
Tempura omakase menu ($38++) - available on Sunday dinners only
Sakura Ebi Salad
Two of three sashimi slice selections
Don with onsen tamago and furikake
Tempura jumbo prawn and shiitake mushrooms
Tempura Mekajiki (swordfish) and sweet potato chips
Tempura scallop skewers with truffle oil & pumpkin fries
Tempura snow crab leg with specially made seaweed flakes & eggplant
Umeboshi soup
Yuzu sorbet (or other dessert of the day)

We began with the Sakura Ebi Salad drizzled with generous amount of Goma dressing. I polished this delicious salad off quickly, and continued onto the three selections of fresh, tender and thick slices of sashimi. We then moved onto the tempura items which were served omakase-style, one course after another to ensure that guests enjoy it at its freshest and crispiest state!

This menu includes a don atop with a perfect onsen tamago and furikake.

The dippings for the tempura Omakase are all made in-house:
Teriyaki mayo, matcha salt and Japanese chilli salt

Each guest will have their own dipping selection.

Kicking off the tempura section with the jumbo prawn infused with truffle oil, we were instantly impressed by these huge prawns. These retained its hot juiciness inside with a crispy batter on the outside. This first tempura course comes with shiitake mushrooms too!

More of the amazing tempura feast: tempura Mekajiki (swordfish) with specially made seaweed flakes and fat sweet potato slices.

Hana Singapore Restaurant: New Tempura Omakase Set Menu 2016

We were also served a bowl of umeboshi soup. The intensity of the umeboshi might be overwhelming for some, but it was after all, meant to cleanse the palate and improve appetites (which it did, for me). Just in time to clear some of the oiliness before continuing the feast!

Just as we were done, they laid the freshly fried tempura scallop skewers with truffle oil, pumpkin fries before us! It is simply such an indulging dining feast! Dig into the tempura snow crab leg with specially made seaweed flakes and eggplant next, a good mix of seafood and vegetable selections.

Finish up with the dessert of the day - the yuzu sorbet or grape sorbet! The yuzu sorbet is such a lovely end to the omakase set! It had a very strong yuzu taste, with citrus bits inside. The grape sorbet is the lady boss's favourite. It reminded me of Yakult with grape flavour, equally refreshing as well.
