Singapore: Curry Gardenn at HillV2

Heading down the road less traveled to HillV2, wide smiles welcomed us from the entrance of Curry Gardenn. We shuffled in to this popular North Indian restaurant in Singapore which has already sprouted its second outlet after the one at Turf City.

We were bowled over by Curry Gardenn's comprehensive menu of hearty and scrumptious Indian cuisine. The service staff was courteous and helpful with their suggestions based on our group size and adjusted the portions for us. To start, we tried their curry dip with garlic naan, which was sufficiently rich in flavour but not overwhelming. Then, we also had the masala chicken curry which raised its game flavour to a delicious spice mix of texture and taste. It was my second time tucking into the masala chicken curry and it doesn't disappoint. The palak paneer (spinach puree), helped us achieve our veggie intake with amazing taste infused with cottage cheese. For mains, we shared a bowl of basmati rice which complemented the rest of the dishes.

Although this might not be the best, the food here is pretty good in its own right. Its stellar service leaves a deep impression on me. HillV2 is somewhere I would recommend if you are bored of other shopping malls around Singapore.

Johor Bahru: Cakes & Juices at Flowers in the Window

It's no secret that I love going to JB for a medley of reasons. One of them is cafes like this two-storey café Flowers in the Window. Its quaint floral-themed façade is unafraid to be over-the-top. Their floral theme extends even to their seasonal homemade cakes and drinks menu. By the same team as Roost Juice Bar round the corner, it is almost impossible to not love this place (well, unless you are sensitive to pollen).

It feels extremely rustic and quaint right from the entrance.

The star desserts on display are the chocolate beetroot cake and citrus syrup cake which caught our attention immediately. The chocolate beetroot cake has an interesting combination, the beetroot amazingly managed to intensify chocolate flavour even more. I liked it a lot more than I thought I would. The citrus syrup cake was certainly less heavy, with an organic, strong orangey taste to it. From coldpressed fusion fruit juices to their flower-infused teas to coffees, all of which had a premium quality to it. The price tag that comes with it is slightly more than the regular drinks menu than the other cafes around JB, but I think for the whole experience it is worth it.

Singapore: South Bronx Burger

Something regular yet special. Industrial and minimalist. There is a slight hint of grimy oily fumes in the air from the kitchen where delicious burgers are being flipped and put together. Then, we reached for some of those burgers in this twenty-seater joint, South Bronx Burger.

The burgers here match the ghetto vibes of this place, with rich buttery and hot-toasted buns for all their burgers. The Lemongrass Prawn Burger (SGD11.90) is stuffed with a juicy aroi lemongrass prawn patty, mango red onion coleslaw and green curry mayo, which was very appetizing. I finished it quickly with space to spare, scoffing down the truffles fries (SGD9.50) which was not particularly good. Tokyo-inspired Umami Burger (SGD11.90) is made with their homemade beef patty with miso mushroom, bonito flakes and mayo which was quite good as well though I prefer the Lemongrass Prawn Burger.

12 Best Places to Eat in Johor Bahru

There is an endless allure of Johor Bahru for Singaporeans. It is the easiest way to have a day trip 'overseas', to do a hair makeover for cheap, massages, most importantly... food!! There are so many scrumptious places to dine at great value... the only regret is not having enough stomach space. Even if you are a regular visitor to JB, there is bound to be a few that you haven't visited yet! Here are 12 delicious reasons to visit Johor Bahru again next weekend - and don't ask "what to eat in JB"!

Here is a map of all the places that I will be introducing in this post:

How to get around Johor Bahru

12 Best Places to Eat in Johor Bahru

There are three main ways to get around Johor for your foot trail!

1. By foot💃
From the Causeway, you can access several popular dining areas on foot, including the restaurants in City Square Mall, the stretch along Jalan Wong Ah Fook and Jalan Trus. To get to the cafes and dessert places at Jalan Dhoby and Jalan Tan Hiok Nee, you will need to walk about 10 minutes and pass by the 'Little India' of Johor.

2. By bus 🚃
You can take buses at the interchange on the ground floor. Take the escalator right after you exit from the railway station. There are several buses that lead you to major landmarks including KSL, Pelangi Mall, Holiday Plaza and more. From there, you can walk to most of the restaurants located near these places.

3. By taxi 🚕
This is the most straightforward method. Many people may still have reservations on how safe taxis are in Johor. I have not met any problems with taxis yet. However, some cab drivers may try to take the further route to maximize the meter fare or suggest a lump sum for a short distance (most likely during peak periods). As a gauge, a smooth ride from City Square to KSL should be around RM7 by meter, and you should not accept more than RM15 for a 'lump sum' fare.

Gourmet 'Hen' (RM58)
"Best atmosphere"
1. Eight at Lido Hill
This fancy seaside wine bar and restaurant is located on a hill, with a romantic alfresco garden setting. It looks like the perfect setting for a dreamy garden wedding. At night, lights blink from the edges with a warm soothing glow. Despite how it is quite secluded, this restaurant fills up quite fast with other diners. I had the Fungus Mixed Mushrooms which I found to be quite tasty with foam and salad on the side. It was a bit one-dimensional after a while and felt more like a side dish. The Gourmet 'Hen' (RM58) comes served with a lovely smoking presentation, roasted chicken, gnocchi, baby vegetables and jus natural. The service here is impeccable, leaving a deep impression as they went out of their way to help us flag a cab after our meal. It was really difficult to flag a cab outside because Eight at Lido Hill is located along a highway.

"Best Moroccan Restaurant"
2. La Casa Blanca
La Casa Blanca has undoubtedly the best-known Moroccan food in Johor. With classic Moroccan prints lining the walls and the fragrant wafts of tagine in the air, this restaurant has an endearing, homely atmosphere that make guests feel welcomed. Of course, when at Casa Blanca, you have to try their famous tagines stews. It comes in fish, seafood, lebanese green bean stew, beef, lamb, egg or cheese versions served in the earthern pots. We tried the beef tagine which was well-executed, infused in flavourful spices, cumin, prunes, dates, almonds, tomatoes, onions, and more other ingredients to make the delicious stew. It took some time before they managed to serve it, but it certainly didn't disappoint. Pair it with the moroccan tea.

"Best Value Western Restaurant"
3. Lavender Bakery (L.table)
I had a childhood memory at Lavender Bakery (L.cafe) - this was where I had my first Americano coffee and one of the best cakes then. Lavender Bakery has since expanded to a second-storey contemporary Western restaurant, named L.table. I was surprised to see how elegantly done the décor is, with black panelling and dim lighting in the evening. Their Summer Salad with mustard dressing is one of the freshest and most refreshing I've had, with oranges and strawberries amidst lettuce greens. The Homemade Duck Confit with scalloped potatoes was tender and had a nice springy bite to it. With a team of dedicated chefs, comfort classics and gastronomic creations are thoughtfully prepared with balanced flavours in mind. The impressive range of menu spans across pastas, hot sandwiches, gourmet burgers, salads and brunch items, certainly something that you will love.

4. Restoran Ya Wang 鸭皇药材烧腊大王
One of several Chinese dining options within walking distance from City Square, Restoran Ya Wang is a locals' favourite place to dine at. The interior is pretty much the classic Malaysian Chinese restaurant, with white-tiled walls, brown tables and red plastic chairs neatly placed around. Regulars love visiting Restoran Ya Wang for many reasons, including its herbal roast duck, dang gui duck, minced meat tofu and steamed fish.

A well-known fishball noodle specialist of over two decades old, Ah Koong Fishball Restaurant is one of the staples for a food trail if you haven't already tried! Not just locals, but tourists head to Ah Koong Fishball Restaurant for their delicious fishballs made from wolfherring and fusilier fish sourced from Sabah and Indonesia. Their fish balls contain no preservatives, crispy and delicious. They serve yong tau foo, fish soup and porridge, fresh oyster soup, abalone soup, and laksa as well.

6. Rosmarino Italian Restaurant
When it comes to Italian restaraurants in Johor, two names come to mind: Rosmarino and Gianni. The latter has a menu with relatively expensive prices by most Johor restaurant standards while Rosmarino strikes a perfect balance between prices, taste, atmosphere and service. Their aglio olio and lobster pasta are not to be missed.

"Best Coconut Dessert Parlour"
7. Sangkaya
Sangkaya is right up my alley, with coconut ice-cream being central to this dessert parlour. We ordered two coconut waters, and a signature matcha ice-cream. Sprinkle the toppings yourself, they instructed. Is that a secret hint of 'put as much as you want'? I guess so... We got to choose from 7 options: coconut flakes, roasted peanuts, cereal, cornflakes, sweet corn, kidney beans, chocolate sauce. It was splendid. The artisanal ice-cream is the premium sort, even though it comes at such a lovely, reasonable price-tag, and I got 3 toppings while at it.

"Best Softserve Dessert Parlour"
8. Koone
With Hokkaido matcha, coconut and now even watermelon flavours, the softserves at Koone is not only photogenic with its smoky auras but also refreshing to taste. Koone's soft serve is of premium quality, creamy and enjoyable despite its affordable price tag. Don't be fooled by the large cup though, the cup holding the soft serve is actually much shallower than that as there is dry ice inside the exterior cup.

Bev C has a charming vibe to it, first with its enigmatic visual illusory signboard and then the little hideout upstairs. It does feel like I could spend the whole day there, with a book and just overlooking Jalan Tan Hiok Nee to people-watch. Some of the best cakes around Bev C include their famous Chocolate Mint Pie, the all-new Gula Malacca Banana Pie, and the interesting Spicy Sunfruit Pie. Their handcrafted beverages include espresso ice-cubes with caramel and milk.

11. The Replacement Lodge & Kitchen
At Replacement, I feel like I am stepping into a Kinfolk magazine. 'For the wanderlust to rest between wanders', it reads. I had my usual - the mocha (RM11), as a lunchtime perk-me-up, which was unexpectedly very, very good. They use a blend of El Salvador, Brazilian, and Columbian coffee beans to create this baby. One of the popular items on the menu include their churros, with interesting dips like salted egg and gula melaka. This cafe has become so popular that waiting time on weekends is 30 minutes. You can always grab a banana cake a few doors down at Hiap Joo while waiting:

Singapore: Chong Wen Ge Café 崇文阁

Chong Wen Ge Cafe - Singapore

After a lull in the Singapore cafés scene for the past weeks comes the brand-new Peranakan café, Chong Wen Ge 崇文阁! Located just adjacent to Thian Hock Keng Temple, the layout of this place is definitely incredibly unique, with seating on the first floor of a three-storey pagoda and indoor air-conditioned area with Peranakan tiles. I was psyched to visit this place and can't wait to try out their food here!

Chong Wen Ge Cafe - Singapore

Chong Wen Ge Café appears to be a family-run business, and the service staff are all energetic and friendly.  On a weekday, the office crowd mobs the entire place during lunch time. This means if you can, try to beat the lunch crowd (half past 11 or earlier should be safe). We reached slightly after 1 in the afternoon and they already ran out of Nyonya Curry Chicken and Nyonya Laksa. I was quite disappointed because I was really looking forward to satisfying my laksa craving - but we decided on Mee Siam (SGD6.80) and Satay Bee Hoon (SGD8.80) to try.

The Satay Bee Hoon was my choice, with its beehoon doused in a generous amount of very strong sweet and spicy peanut sauce. There was an abundance of ingredients in there - pork slices, pig liver, beansprouts, kangkong, clams... it fell short of my expectations as I wished it could be a lot more wokhei and richness in terms of that, though I guess within the limits of their kitchen it was good enough. Similarly, the taste of the Mee Siam tends towards sweet than sour, with a lack of depth in taste for its soup broth again. If you're expecting a 'hawker' taste, you would be disappointed. Nevertheless, the good thing about Chong Wen Ge is that they are very generous with their ingredients and it feels more value for money that way. Their Teh C Special (SGD5.50) is their signature drink that must not be missed.

Beside the café space, there is a shop selling Peranakan tiles which is endlessly fascinating for us. They restored tiles from shophouses around Singapore and other countries as well.

Singapore: Street 50 Restaurant & Bar (Bay Hotel) New Menu

Street 50 Restaurant (Bay Hotel) New Menu 2016 July

I love new menus.
It is a sign that restaurants are looking to pander to the changing tastebuds of their patrons, to maintain relevance in this evolving dining scene. Located in one of Singapore's hottest boutique hotels Bay Hotel, Street 50 Restaurant & Bar now features a down-to-earth, local Singapore classic favourite 'street food'! The best part? Street 50 is dedicated to serve these amazing culinary treats at fantastic value. Seen personally by Malaysian chef Kelvin who previously helmed at Sofitel, every single dish is a thoughtful creation!
In this post, I will tell you the dishes that are worth checking out from Street 50, the prices, and what are the best things to order when you're here - tips from the chef himself! :)

Street 50 Restaurant (Bay Hotel) New Menu 2016 July

Head down the quieter side of Harbourfront just across Vivocity, you will discover a hidden gem right at the first floor of Bay Hotel that will not burn a hole in your pocket. Most of these new items are priced between $7.90 - 12.90. The laidback aura of the restaurant and attentive servers welcome all their guests. The seating here is comfortably spaced, ensuring that you will have privacy while you dine.

Street 50 Restaurant (Bay Hotel) New Menu 2016 July

The new menu from Street 50 Restaurant & Bar.

Street 50 Restaurant (Bay Hotel) New Menu 2016 July

Soft Shell Crab with Salted Egg Dip (SGD7.90)

We began with the Soft Shell Crab with Salted Egg Dip served hot. It is amazing on its own, retaining its crispiness even when it reached our mouths! The salted egg cream tends towards a sweeter sort, a popular accompaniment when it comes to our favourite dishes, though I would say it is not that necessary because it is very good on its own!

Street 50 Restaurant (Bay Hotel) New Menu 2016 July

Coffee Wings (SGD7.90)

This is the most unassuming dish ever! I ended up really liked this surprisingly, these coffee wings have a distinct coffee flavour without being overwhelming. After carefully tweaking the proportions, Chef Kelvin arrived at the perfect balance between sweetness and the coffee fragrance and bitterness! The thick velvety sauce coat every inch of the very tender and juicy chicken meat. It is quite pricey for 4pc, but then it was also very delicious.

Street 50 Restaurant (Bay Hotel) New Menu 2016 July

Cereal Prawns with Wasabi Dressing (SGD9.90)

This is a special rendition of the cereal prawns you get during tze char meals, deep-fried crispy prawns sprinkled with small crunchy cereal bits! Actually very, very good even without the dressing because these prawns are super plump and juicy with the cereal encasing it. Super hungry just thinking about it. The sweet wasabi dressing has a hint of mint, and the wasabi isn't too strong. A very good choice to go around and share.

Street 50 Restaurant (Bay Hotel) New Menu 2016 July

Salted Egg Lava Chicken Breast (SGD9.90)

Here comes the highly anticipated star dish! This is the result to fuse both the chicken cordon bleu recipe and one of Singaporeans' greatest food obsessions ever - salted egg yolk. The chicken breast is kept moist, chewy and tender with Chef Kelvin's new cooking style packed with homemade salted egg yolk paste and cheese. They do not inject the salted egg yolk paste and cheese into the chicken breast as they believe in ensuring its freshness, it is rolled within the chicken breast when it is about to be served.

Street 50 Restaurant (Bay Hotel) New Menu 2016 July

XO Scallops and Prawns Fried Rice (SGD9.90)

Extending the tze char theme, this is stir-fried with premium ingredients and generous amounts of prawns and scallops, wrapped in an omelette to ensure its piping hot yumminess when served!

Street 50 Restaurant (Bay Hotel) New Menu 2016 July

Shrimp and Eggplant Sambal (SGD8.90)

A curiously delicious one, in which the sambal spiciness is not that apparent, which appeals to me who can't take too much spiciness yet wanting to have a bit of the sambal taste. You know, a bundle of contradictions. It is a dish of brinjals, fresh stir-fried plump shrimps and crunchy ikan bilis that is very appetizing due to its sweet, sour and spicy variant kicks.

Street 50 Restaurant (Bay Hotel) New Menu 2016 July

Curry Fish Head (SGD18.90)

I was surprisingly blown away by the Curry Fish Head which was done by their in-house chef specializing in Indian cuisine. The first impression was: wow, wow and wow. I could have this with two bowls of plain rice and be extremely satisfied with my meal. It was luxiously rich and fragrant, a cacophony of spices and silky-smooth fish flesh that hits the right spot. It would be perfect for an incredibly premium prata sauce... I guess if you're in the mood for curry, you'll be instantly sold by this.

Street 50 Restaurant (Bay Hotel) New Menu 2016 July

Claypot Assam Fish Head (SGD18.90)

Instead of the usual assam sauce we are used to, Chef Kelvin prefers to add a healthier twist to it, using tomato puree instead as the base. The result? A light, tantalizing broth with tangy, sweet flavours that reminds me of heartwarming homecooked food. It doesn't have much of the 'assam' taste, but more of a tomato based dish. The fish used in the Curry Fish Head and Assam Fish Head is the same which means as customers, you get to choose how you prefer your fish to be depending on your mood - same, same but different lah. I would say if I don't want to have strong flavours for dinner, I would choose this in a heartbeat. Excellent for sharing among four hungry people - it's a gigantic portion!

Street 50 Restaurant (Bay Hotel) New Menu 2016 July

Oyster Char Kway Teow (SGD12.90)

Inspired by the Hong Kong horfun, Chef Kelvin recreates this char kway teow that is uniquely Street 50 indeed. While ensuring there is a hint of wokhei, he is concerned with ensuring that the kway teow (flat rice noodles) do not 'break', a continuous strand for your enjoyment. It is stir-fried with fresh oysters, hints of Chinese wine, Thai kailan, and mushrooms in oyster sauce. You get to choose if you want it served with fresh, raw oysters as well.

Street 50 Restaurant (Bay Hotel) New Menu 2016 July

Fresh Coconut Malibu Dessert (SGD8.90)

The 'perfect 10' dessert - TWO scoops of premium milky coconut ice cream, a medley of tropical fruits all in a fresh malibu coconut! Not only is it photogenic, the coconuts used to make these desserts are difficult to source for due to the uniquely sweet coconut flesh. Very good value considering this is only $8.90 (people pay $15 upwards for bingsus which have much lesser ingredients). This is even complimentary when you dine up to $50 here at Street 50.

As if all these aren't amazing enough, you will get to stand a chance to win one of these prizes when you dine at Street 50 (till 14 August 2016):

1st Prize: 3D2N stay in newly opened Bay Hotel Ho Chi Minh City

Why did 中國好声音 Voice of China Season 5 become 中國新歌聲 SING CHINA?

We are all used to Voice of China being called well, Voice of China. But two weeks before this mega-popular singing competition is launched, they decided to change the name to 中國新歌聲 or also know as SING CHINA. Following four seasons of Voice of China, a change of name cannot be a goo marketing idea considering how people are already used to the competition format. Nevertheless, nearly everything else is the same, especially the soul of this singing competition - the judges. So why did 中國好声音 Voice of China Season 5 become 中國新歌聲 SING CHINA? What else is going to change in The Voice of China the all-new SING CHINA? All the answers in this post:

Why did 中國好声音 Voice of China Season 5 become 中國新歌聲 SING CHINA?

Why 中國好声音 Voice of China Season 5 became 中國新歌聲 SING CHINA:

On 2016年1月20日, Zhejiang Tang De (Talent Films) signed a contract with Talpa Media to receive all copyrights with regards to The Voice, for Tang De to produce over 200 variety TV shows in China, including Seasons 5-8 of The Voice of China. However, a day later, Satellite Television Asia Region (STAR) sent a lawyer letter to request the absolvement of this contract. This is because STAR believe that they have the sole copyrights to The Voice of China production. The first four seasons of Voice of China were produced together with STAR. However, Talpa had canceled its deal with STAR and is in the midst of a legal dispute with them, accusing STAR of unlicensed use of the reality talent show format. In turn, STAR claims that Talpa Media has no legal right to issue the same set of rights to any other media company until 2018.

Following this legal dispute, regarding the copyrights of the brand name 'Voice of China' on July 4, 2016, the Beijing Intellectual Property Court announced the verdict that STAR has been forbidden to employ the official name 'the Voice of China' (中國好声音) in its promotional marketing, advertising, show production and all related material. As such, the originally planned name of 中國好声音 Voice of China has been changed to 中國新歌聲 SING CHINA. STAR hinted as a possibility of repealing the trial's result and does not rule out the possibility of re-adopting the show's former name in future. The official Zhejiang Television media representative confirmed this change on July 6, 2016 to avoid all legal charges regarding copyright issues. To avoid being 'bullied' by the Dutch company Talpa Media, Zhejiang Television media has vowed to only produce 'truly original content'.

TLDR; Copyright issues.

What won't change:

Same old judging panel that you love
Harlem, Jay Chou, Na Ying, Wang Feng.

Competition format
Not veering away from Season 4's format, Voice of China Season 5 will adopt the same structure: Blind auditions (choosing of judges), PK battles (between each team), PK battles (across teams) before finishing off with the grand finale.

Why did 中國好声音 Voice of China Season 5 become 中國新歌聲 SING CHINA?

What is different in the all-new SING CHINA:

No more Hua Shao... instead, the new host is Li Yong.
The host with the amazingly glib tongue that fires off his script like a tongue twister will no longer host the new SING CHINA. That is something that audience will immediately sense. Certainly, Li Yong, the new host has big shoes to fill when it comes to powerful openings to every episode that we all love. But Li Yong is an old-timer when it comes to hosting. He had experience with a medley of CCTV shows including 夢想中國 and New Year's Gala! He could possibly charm the audience better than Hua Shao - we'll see.

No more turning chairs - but 'sliding rollercoasters'.
Possibly due to copyright issues, the new show now feature sliding rollercoasters as judges chairs instead of those that can go 360 degrees around. Throw Na Ying into the mix and she'll probably tease everyone endlessly with this new feature.

Guide to touring Manila city, all-day itinerary!

Let's be honest, Manila is not one of our 'top of minds' Southeast Asian destinations. But this city has been nothing short of simply: mindblowingly crazy. There are so many things going on all at once. Every corner of the city demands your attention, and it grips your senses hard! The system is not the friendliest for tourists, but the Filipinos here are wonderfully gracious hosts to travelers on the road. This is why Manila is mesmerizing. There are not many guides to touring Manila city or all-day itineraries. I could not find something that could instantly help me with my travel planning in my pre-journey preparation, and so I hope this helps you as a travel resource.

All the conventional touristy visits and all stopovers marked on this map for your convenience.

Where to stay

Guide to touring Manila city, all-day itinerary!

Hostels are a great way to meet people, especially locals that can point you the right way in a place as disorganized as Manila. If you're thinking to travel the road less traveled, this would be a perfect way to kickstart your journey. Plus! If you're traveling solo or want to explore the city with more people, hostels are a bustling place of like-minded people. The one that we stayed at is Our Melting Pot. I can't tell you if it's the best but it is quite awesome because of three reasons:

1. Great hosts at Our Melting Pot
They organize free city tours, including the touristy routes: museum tours, Intramuros tours, and even 'slum tours'. It is either nerve wracking to do the last one on your own, or highly likely to be dangerous. They even remember nearly all the guests by name and ensure that you feel totally at home.

2. Lots of shower cubicles
Not all hostels have enough shower cubicles and having to wait for one while you're feeling all grimy after a long day... is not the worst thing. But if you can avoid it, why not, right. Hot or cold showers, checked. And strong water pressure, checked.

3. Generous breakfasts
One characteristic that stood out about Filipinos is that they are serious about their food. For breakfast, they have rotating menus, with bananas, sandwiches and cereals as a mainstay. They have about six bottles of different fruit jams and sandwiches spreads. In a hostel - that's considered pretty damn good.

4. 24-hour reception
If your plane lands in the middle of the night, you would want somewhere with 24-hour reception so you know there's someone waiting for you.

5. Right smack at Makati
Otherwise also known as the most modern and developed part of Manila, with Century City Mall within 10 minutes of walking, with restaurants and bars all around. The unfortunate part is that we had to wake up at ungodly hours in the morning every day for hiking activities so... more on that soon!

6. Prices (inclusive of breakfast)
A private single room is SGD27/night (PHP950), while a mixed 4-people dorm is SGD17/night (PHP625).

7. Completely smoke-free and alcohol-free
Something that ought not to be taken for granted!

8. Mini-mart downstairs - perfect for stocking up before your day trip out to.. wherever

Guide to touring Manila city, all-day itinerary!

The downside to living in this hostel is that you might have to accommodate a stranger in your room. This results in quite a wild card. It could be your next best friend or just a quirky old lady who insists that my sister five years older than me is my twin (true story). It gets a bit noisy at night if your room is near the main area, but other than that, the hosts have been amazingly accommodating.

1. Experiencing the 'hipster' breakfast style, bBegin the day with Early Bird Breakfast Club.
7am - 8.30am

Initiation to Manila at a cafe dressed in lovely-Stepford-wife-pink? Certainly instagrammable, hundred percent delicious. The Early Bird Breakfast Club opens at 7 in the morning, which means you can start bright and early and make your day count. The newspaper menu follows its breakfast theme - titled Breakfast of Champions, it is indeed hard to counter that statement.

I got myself a magnificent plate of Bacon & Pineapple Scotch Eggs (SGD9/ PHP315), with soft-boiled eggs encased with lightly fried sausage meat, served with hash potatoes, strips of bacon, grilled tomatoes and a side of bacon and pineapple chutney. Everything was so rich in flavour, sweet and savoury all around that - it was just the beginning to Filipino cuisine in which everything is intensely flavoured (in my opinion). We also got the Puto Bumbong Pancakes which is apparently a hipster spin on a traditional culinary snack puto bumbong of steamed glutinous rice! These were topped with toasted coconut flakes and had a really dense texture. Early Breakfast Club is located on The Fort Strip at Bonifacio Global City. Definitely worth checking out!

2. See the 'astronaut graffiti wall' at Icon Plaza

8.30am - 9am

Guide to touring Manila city, all-day itinerary!

Take a moment to look at how gigantic this graffiti is! We were all instantly wowed and ended up staring at it for a good ten minutes despite standing in the sun. Thanks to the Internet, I found out that this wall mural was made by Cyrcle, a duo from Los Angeles, California. This graffiti art is called Between the Lines a part of their exhibition titled Nothing Exists. (Info source from leftoverjinx)

3. Understanding Manila's history at..
Manila American Cemetery and Memorial
9am - 11am

Guide to touring Manila city, all-day itinerary!

The Manila American Cemetery and Memorial (entrance is free!) is definitely the most well-maintained cemetery ever. Five minutes walking into this space, we were greeted by a mesmerizing, modern sight, a sea of white crosses. It is unbelievably serene, yet there is this hollowing sadness about how many precious lives were lost during the world war.

Guide to touring Manila city, all-day itinerary!

This place contains the largest number of graves of our military dead of World War II. A staggering total of 17,201, most of whom lost their lives in operations in New Guinea and the Philippines.

Guide to touring Manila city, all-day itinerary!

Twenty-five mosaic maps detail the achievements of the American armed forces in the Pacific, China, India and Burma. It is quite a lot of information and details to read, but it is very interesting to read even if you are not a history buff! For Singaporeans, our history lessons on WWII don't include this part of the world in detail, so it is quite eye-opening to understand more about what happened here, especially how the forces moved and organized themselves across a spangle of these islands.

A chapel in the form of a white masonry building enriched with sculpture and mosaic, stands near the center of the cemetery. The names of those since recovered and identified are carved into the white walls, in somewhat alphabetical order... it is hard to believe every single name is a life lost.

4. Get stuck in Manila traffic
11am - 12pm

This is probably the quintessential Manila experience, one that you will have to go through whether you like it or not because that's how the city is like. The best part is that you can always hop onto a cab and grab a midday snooze while it happens! Under 400 PHP (SGD12) for a ride from Manila American Cemetery and Memorial to Intramuros area.

5. Getting touch with traditional Filipino cuisine at White Knight Restaurant
12pm - 1.30pm

Guide to touring Manila city, all-day itinerary!

White Knight Restaurant is located on the first floor of a hotel of the same name, one of the many restaurants around Intramuros. White Knight is overlooked by the major tourist review sites because it is subsumed under the hotel, and after the experience there, I would think it's really quite good and deserve to be ranked as one of the tops as well. The other big names include Babara's and Ristorante Delle Mitre (all found on the map above).

We found ourselves trying one of the most representative Filipino dishes - Pork Adobo here, with a luscious rich peppery broth of vinegar and soy sauce doused over tender pieces of marinated pork. It is definitely too salty to be eaten on its own, but one of the most satisfying meals I've ever had when paired with fragrant piping hot white rice. I haven't had enough adobos to be an expert on it, but this one already left a very positive impression for me as my first try! Their Inihaw na Pusit (grilled squid)is pretty good as well, cooked in a traditional way as well with onions, soy sauce with a side of Thai chilli for the dip. The squid has very little rubbery texture and it is certainly very yummy! What is a Filipino meal without ending it with some sweet Halo-Halo? Everyone presents this differently, and here at White Knight it is a scoop of chocolate ice-cream in a sinful cup of condensed milk, jackfruit, sweet potatoes, yam, and slices of coconut flesh.

What to order: Pork Adobo, Inihaw na Pusit, Halo-Halo

Guide to touring Manila city, all-day itinerary!

This historic core in the capital of Philippines, Intramuros is something you cannot miss if you are in Manila. From the city's foundation in 1571 to the end of Spanish rule in 1898, Intramuros was essentially Manila itself. Stone walls and fortifications were built in a pentagonal shape to protect the citizens from invasion. Within which, there is a dense grid-like system of streets and main square where government buildings are stationed. The best way to explore Intramuros area is on foot, with lovely sights along the way. There will be people asking you if you need tours for a fee, avoid them and explore around yourself - it's more fun that way.

6. Understanding religion in Manila..
Visiting the Manila Cathedral
1.30pm - 2pm

Built in 1571, Manila Cathedral is one of the oldest churches in Phillippines and the oldest in Manila. Its architectural structure has classic Romanesque influences and is reminiscent of European cathedrals. The cathedral is also home to the largest pipe organ in Southeast Asia. There are helpful touchscreen displays for you to learn more about the place too.

The interior is breathtaking and the stained glass windows within the cathedral are also endlessly fascinating. It is definitely worth a visit. People love holding weddings at this amazing cathedral so you might not have access depending on your luck! No entry fee is collected but a voluntary donation will be appreciated.

Fort Santiago was the military headquarters of the Spanish colonial government and this entire place is akin to an outdoors museum with a wealth of historical knowledge with a beautiful garden. For the curious travellers, this is a huge playground for you to explore and run around! And definitely a lot of good photo ops against the exquisite stone walls.

8. Rizal Shrine Museum
3pm - 4pm

The Rizal Shrine Museum is humble reproduction of the original two-storeyed colonial Spanish style house in Calamba, Laguna where José Rizal was born in 1861 and where he grew up. Rizal is regarded as one of the greatest national heroes of the Philippines and thus, the Rizal Shrine is built to remember the lifework of José Rizal. Much to my ignorance, I never knew who Rizal was previously, but this shrine really educates its visitors in the most efficient manner with models and timelines. Considered a genius beyond his years at that time, Rizal could speak several languages and was very eloquent. He wrote El Filibusterismo and Noli Me Tangere, which paved the way for a Filipino uprising against Spain.

Walk all the way to the end of Fort Santiago and you will be greeted with the stunning view of Pasig River, all to yourself. The whole place was so quiet and deserted, it is so different from the rest of Manila indeed.

10. Experience the rush hour.
5pm - 5.30pm

The late afternoon sun casting over Intramuros and the whirl of the evening peak hour was pouring into the streets. Not very friendly for tourists trying to navigate their way on these new streets... nevertheless, an incredible experience. There was a street night market of some sort along the way where you can stop by for some shopping if you want.

Guide to the complete Manila City experience in one day.

From the moment we exited the walls, it began to feel 'dangerous' - perhaps from the cacophony from the traffic, the hasty pedestrians rushing to get to their destinations... and therefore I took a lot less photos than I wished to avoid attracting the wrong attention!

11. Get to Central Terminal - experience the Manila metro
5.30pm - 6pm

Guide to the complete Manila City experience in one day.

We were trying to get back to Makati district where our hostel is, but if we were to grab a cab, it will certainly be caught in a jam. Not cool. Besides, I was totally gaming to try out the public transport after a whole day of walking and cabbing, so yes, happy to head right to Central Terminal.

Passengers using the metro system in Manila will have to buy a plastic magnetic single-journey card from the machines. It was a mad rush for the train, but it wasn't crazy crowded. We had a lot of help from the locals who told us where to alight for Makati: Gil Puyat.

12. Jeepney back to Makati Avenue
6 - 7pm

Guide to the complete Manila City experience in one day.
Guide to the complete Manila City experience in one day.

Jeepneys are colourful, music-blasting jeeps that is part of the backbone of Manila public transportation. They offer a perplexing selection of destinations especially for the traveller who can hardly differentiate Buendia from Guadalupe. Destinations are written on narrow boards stuck under the windows. How it works is that jeepneys can stop and start wherever 'safe' by Manila standards, you just got to be quick. Know where your destination is and see if any jeepney goes through that route, and if it does, hop on! Ask the driver how much it is to your destination and you can either pass it to the commuter next to you (normal practice) or you can squat-walk your way through the bouncing vehicle (the roof is very low, even for me) to the front. It is usually 7 PHP - get your coins ready. Here you get to be part of the Manila traffic again.

13. Wind down with Arrozeria at Century City Mall
7 - 8.30pm

Guide to the complete Manila City experience in one day.
Guide to the complete Manila City experience in one day.
Guide to the complete Manila City experience in one day.

Thankfully we met a 21-year old girl on the jeepney who led us the way to Century City Mall, which we would otherwise likely to have missed. This mall is an empty upscale mall in the middle of Makati. There, we indulged in a seafood paella at Arrozeria. Arrozeria is a Spanish restaurant which has relocated to Bonifacio High Street instead. There are plenty of options at Century City Mall and even along Makati Avenue itself. We decided on Century City Mall because we needed restocking on our supplies for the next day's activities to Mount Batulao.

And... that's it! We made our way back to the hostel and discussed the transportation options to Mount Batulao with the hosts at Our Melting Pot before winding down for the night. Phew, what a long day! Of course, there are plenty of other things to see in Manila even just on the average tourist list. But realistically, with the amount of traffic, this is probably the luckiest way to experience Manila in many facets, to see and feel Manila's heartbeat!

Tok Panjang The Peranakan Cafe opens at East Coast, by the same folks behind House of Peranakan

Tok Panjang The Peranakan Cafe

For the keen viewers of Little Nyonya or those knowledgeable with Peranakan culture, you would immediately identify what Tok Panjang means (It means 'feast'!). It is now also the name of the latest Peranakan café that has entered the Singapore dining scene! But the folks behind Tok Panjang are no newbies. They are the very same experienced 'family power' team that brought you House of Peranakan, racking up 30 years of culinary prowess. Tok Panjang at East Coast Road will bring you new surprises and old-time classics that their regulars love. Eagle-eyed East-siders have already gotten wind and heading right there. One fantastic tip: their menu is available all-day, which means you can have your assam laksa in the morning if that rocks your boat!

 Tok Panjang The Peranakan Cafe

Kueh Pie Tee (SGD6.50 for 4pcs)

The classic bites here include some of the perennial favourites that have tempted tastebuds. Everyone knows and loves Kueh Pie Tee. These adorable table pleasers are crispy pastry cups stuffed to the brim with moist fillings of shredded turnips, bamboo shoots, prawns,  topped with a sprig of coriander leaf. They are extremely refreshing and delicious pops to start off with.

Tok Panjang The Peranakan Cafe

Bob's Pork Buns ($8 for 2pcs)

Bob's Pork Buns are essentially kong bak paus, whose name is inspired by Tok Panjang's 75-year old owner and head chef! It is perfectly done, with the caramelised braised pork belly slow cooked for hours to achieve an incredible touch of cozy home made taste. It is not the 'fatty' in texture, but tender and deeply flavoured. For the best way to enjoy it, drizzle some of the sauce over the pork belly to increase the moistness.

Tok Panjang The Peranakan Cafe

Nonya Ngoh Hiang (SGD5.50)

The Nonya Ngoh Hiang surprised me; I didn't think it would be anything special - well just ngoh hiang right? What really stood out for me was not just its creative mix of water chestnuts  with the usual suspects of minced meat, prawns, carrots, turnips and onions.. but how thin the crisp wafer around the ngoh hiang was.

Tok Panjang The Peranakan Cafe

Tauhu Goreng (SGD7.90)

The last side dish that I'll be recommending is the Tauhu Goreng which is done with their a drizzle of signature roasted peanut sambal sauce made in house in a succulent heap with crunchy beansprouts and cucumber atop fried beancurd. I can foresee the older generations really liking this as it gave a very multi-dimensional twist to the usual beancurd dishes.

Tok Panjang The Peranakan Cafe

Cleanse your palate with the Pandan lemongrass drink that comes either hot and iced! It is very lightly-flavoured and completely sugarless. Sugar syrup is served on the side for you to add as you like. I like the health-conscious option though I emptied the tiny jug of syrup in.

Tok Panjang The Peranakan Cafe

Assam Laksa (SGD8.90)

After a round of these yummy Peranakan classic bites (those are only appetisers, really. This isn't a 'tok panjang' for nothing!) we moved onto the highly anticipated mains!!! Without a doubt, my favourite goes to the Assam Laksa. Why? It has the succulent taste of kembong fish that I'm so familiar with - it's the one fish variety that I grew up eating. This assam broth is extremely rich, other than the kembong fish stock, there were also an impressive assortment of other ingredients: tamarind, shallots, galangal, belachan, lemongrass, red chilies, rojak flower, mint leaves, pineapples, cucumber, onions, and prawn paste. The result? I must say this is one of the laksa renditions that I will not forget! It is slightly spicy that pique the senses nicely.

Tok Panjang The Peranakan Cafe

Nonya Mee Siam (SGD7.90)

Another scumptiously flavoured creation by Tok Panjang, the Mee Siam here packs a lot of punch! The aromatic broth is made from a rich medley of ingredients that is no stranger to Peranakan cuisine: rempah, candlenut, galangal, lemongrass, belachan and dried shrimp, bean paste and prawns. It scores high on the spicy-o-meter!

Tok Panjang The Peranakan Cafe

Nasi Lemak Set (SGD10.90) / Peranakan Rice Set (SGD11.90)

These rice sets are pretty elaborate with a generous selection of side dishes. For the nasi lemak set, there are five: babi assam, long beans sambal, assam baby squid, chicken wings, and sambal telur! For the peranakan rice set, you can choose between three mains: babi pongteh, beef rendang, ikan garam assam. These are served with the nonya chap chye and a bowl of signature itik tim soup!

Tok Panjang The Peranakan Cafe

Gula Melaka Sago Pudding (SGD4)

Let's start with my favourite dessert! It's certainly not the nicest looking one. In fact it looks quite ugly but honestly it is as delicious as it is ugly. There wasn't a lot of gula melaka so it wasn't particularly overpowering nor too sweet, which does not distract you from the sago pudding which has this chewy qq texture that I like so much!

Tok Panjang The Peranakan Cafe

Tok Panjang The Peranakan Cafe

Durian Chendol (SGD6.50)

This is a traditional Nonya dessert topped with fresh durian puree, red beans, atap chee, and Chendol strips made in-house. Gula melaka is served separately for you to drench your chendol with, depending on the amount you like.

Tok Panjang The Peranakan Cafe

Pulut Hitam (SGD3)

The gorgeous coconut pattern on this traditionally, slow-cooked black glutinous rice got all of us excited! Ultimately, this is the one that really got our hearts as we ordered another one to share. It is not the sort that is too sweet, but very fragrant with the coconut milk!

Tok Panjang The Peranakan Cafe

Bubur Terigu (SGD3)

This is one interesting Nonya dessert that I have never tried before, and I liked the down-to-earth taste it has. It is actually made of big wheat slow-cooked with gula melaka and coconut milk, similar to pulut hitam, just with a different base.

Nara Thai Brings Bangkok Flavours To You With New Menu (July 2016)

$
0
0

Singapore is only a 3-hour flight away from balmy Bangkok city, but it isn't a journey we have to make if we have Nara Thai. Especially with the launch of Nara's new menu, inspired by our favourite flavours from hundreds of winding sois that you've wandered into in Bangkok! You will find the same time-honoured Thai flavours in the new array of menu items: Tom Yum, hot basil chili sauce, Northeastern larb. The chefs here pair them with unconventional ingredients. See, Nara ensures a scrumptious, unique Thai dining experience just for you! Let's get on with the new items that you can look forward to!

Yum Hed (SGD14.90)

Obviously, you will still have the comforting green mango salad that everyone is used to, but it'll be hard to resist trying the other equally Sa-thai-ssfying salads? Yum Hed, also known as mushroom salad, is a clever way to incorporate popular ingredients julienned oyster mushrooms and brown clamshell mushrooms in a salad. You're warned: this innocuous bowl of salad kicks ass. I mean, its intensely fiery garlic chili dressing is only for the strong-willed (or the courageous). Such an intense way to kickstart a tantalizing meal!

Kung Phad Num Prik Pao Tom Yum, Stir-Fried Tom Yum Tiger Prawns (SGD28.90)

Tom Yum and seafood could be your dream marriage in food, or actually a reality at Nara. The Kung Phad Num Prik Pao Tom Yum, Stir-Fried Tom Yum Tiger Prawns are first, flash-fried before being tossed into the wok with galangal, kaffir lime leaves, and lemongrass. It is great in idea, though it came off a little dry for me. Perhaps more Tom Yum sauce drizzles would fill the gap in expectations.

Seafood and Coconut Otah (SGD16.90)

The most photogenic dish has to be the Seafood and Coconut Otah! It is presented with the half-opened coconut as the bowl, and the otah cake contained within it. The otah is neither as smoky nor spicy as the usual otah we are used to, but more of a mild version of it. It has a texture that reminded me of cake mousse. Overall, it's interesting and very different from what I thought it would be before I tried it.

Larb Moo (SGD13.90)

The one that scores the most "authenticity" points has to be the Larb Moo, with tantalizing spicy minced pork meat placed upon a boat of butter cabbage leaf and stuffed right into your mouth... hmm! Delicious.

Fried Century Egg with Chili & Hot Basil (SGD15.90)

You'll most certainly love the Fried Century Egg with Chili & Hot Basil! The bowl of earthy, delicious flavours of century eggs and delicious crispy chicken bites are underlined by the piquant sharp dressing of bird's eye chili, Thai garlic, fresh lime and a dash of palm sugar. With the slight herbal infusion of lemongrass, mint leaves and shallots, this is practically universally well-liked!

Khrim Maphraw Linci Khnom (SGD7.90)

And of course something for our second stomachs, the Khrim Maphraw Linci Khnom, yam and pumpkin in lychee coconut cream! Props for the perfect treatment of the pumpkin, maintaining a soft yet not mushy texture. It is quite an incredibly sweet finish!

Watermelon Limeade (SGD6.50)

Unbelievably refreshing with a blend of watermelon juice and lime. What's more, this is super effective in quenching the spiciness of all the dishes here!

‎中國新歌聲‬ SING CHINA Season 1 Episode 1

SING CHINA Season 1 has launched! Did you know about it because everyone was circulating a certain 'Nathan Hartono' performance? Or because you're simply a hardcore fan of Voice of China (its previous show name)? They are trying really hard to change the original format due to copyright issues, but the core content is essentially still the same.

Here you can watch the entire SING CHINA Season 1 Episode 1.

Retaining one of the Voice of China's traditions, each of the judges sing one of the other judges' famous songs. Na Ying sings Harlem's 1997 hit romance song 只有為你 - is it me or her voice became even more characteristic of herself? The rest of the judges harmonize with her. Then, Wang Feng sings 安静, which everyone knows is a huge favourite of Jay Chou's. Harlem does Na Ying's 不管有多苦 in a super rock version which is very different from the original, before Jay Chou taking on the stage, singing 满 by Wang Feng. Whoa, Jay Chou looks good, it's rare to see him taking on this genre, and with him on stage, the whole atmosphere in the house reaches its apex. Ending off the first section, all four judges sing 我要夏天 (I want summer) together. This is paying homage to one of the ideas that its predecessor (Voice of China) always coincide the show's opening with the beginning of summer in July.

Out of 400 contestants, the first contestant is an Indo-Chinese from Singapore, 向洋 (Nathan Hartono). He picks a more contemporary song 有没有 by 韦礼安 which suits him a lot. He achieves the first 4 stars, which means all judges want him to be on their team. Seeing his handsome looks, Na Ying, as usual, cannot keep her hands to herself and immediately runs up to ask for a hug after his performance ends. Jay Chou offers to give 向洋 an opportunity to perform in his concert tour during the Singapore leg. Harlem and Wang Feng give feeble attempts to attract him. The contestant gives a round of compliments to all the judges. Finally, he chooses Team Jay Chou.

向洋 Nathan Hartono: Instagram (you're welcome ;))

‎中國新歌聲‬ SING CHINA Season 1 Episode 1

The second contestant hails from Zhuozhou, nearly 70km away south of Beijing. She is 白若溪 (Bai Ruo Xi). This 30-year old is a cat-lover, and owns 18 cats! She is 1.8m and is a professional musical actress, and chose 无处安放 as her performance song. Wang Feng reveals that this song is written for his wife, Zhang Ziyi, inspired from a time when they took a roadtrip. It's little surprise, but she heads for Team Wang Feng.

Curious why SING CHINA is no longer called VOICE OF CHINA? Find out here.

‎中國新歌聲‬ SING CHINA Season 1 Episode 1

Next up, a veterinarian from Sichuan. He is 游森 (You Sen) and performs Jay Chou's song 双截棍 with a traditional Sichuan accent and style. All four judges burst in laughter with amusement. If you'd remember, from the fourth season of VOC, the champion from Jay Chou - Chen Zi Tong sang this song in rap-form. But it seems 游森 (You Sen) is Chen Zi Tong meets Zhang Yang (see Zhang Yang's performance here)! Jay Chou seems bewildered by how his song can be done in this way. Na Ying is on the verge of going crazy listening to him. Finally, Jay Chou cannot resist supporting him, and so Team Jay Chou he is.

‎中國新歌聲‬ SING CHINA Season 1 Episode 1

Malaysian-born 李佩玲 (Li Peiling) is the fourth contestant! I take a liking to her immediately, she is very straight-forward and guileless in her way of expressing herself. From the first line of 心有独钟, her voice reminds me of a very '90s classic' meets Shila Amzah. Harlem points out that she appears to not be of Chinese descent. But does it matter? Let's hope this singing competition is a place for us to unite in Chinese music, and transcend beyond nationality and culture. This 16-year old chooses Team Na Ying. Good choice I would say.

‎中國新歌聲‬ SING CHINA Season 1 Episode 1

The second last contestant of the night is 蒋敦豪 (Jiang Dunhao) from Xinjiang. His home is near Lake Sayram, which he describes to be the 'last tear of the Atlantic Ocean'. Following the steps of last season's champ Zhang Lei, he sings a minyao 天空之城. He quickly wins the favour of Wang Feng. I personally feel that he is too similar to Zhang Lei yet doesn't have as magnetic a voice as the former, which is a huge disadvantage. At least he chooses Team Wang Feng, which means Wang Feng will be able to sculpt him in another way (Zhang Lei was on Team Na Ying).

‎中國新歌聲‬ SING CHINA Season 1 Episode 1

Finally, we end off the night with 杨博 (Yang Bo), an online singing sensation. I almost screamed - he sings one of my absolute favourite songs(!!!), 十万毫升眼泪 (the original deserves a listen as well). It's not an easy song to sing at all, but he controls it well. His voice reminds me of 陈势安. Right? Very addictive. I love the way he changed the ending part of the song. I'm rooting for him already, and look forward to his subsequent performances! I bet he will go far in this competition. He chooses Team Na Ying.

Singapore: Laneige & Innisfree haul - 4 "holy grail" Korean skincare and makeup products with 1030am.

Skincare and makeup junkies out there, I'm sure Laneige and Innisfree aren't strangers to you. If you're not that crazy over skincare but want to find out more about these two ultimate "holy grail" brands and my review on their customer favourites' hot products - this is the review! I was kindly invited by Korean Skincare and Makeup Online Store, 1030am to browse their selections and found that they have stocked up only all the super popular items, which save you the trouble from finding out what's good for you, but simply what product you need. They absorb GST, offer cashback incentives, and $10 off for all new customers (min. spending $60). In this review I will be focusing on a few items that you can find on 1030am.

First up,

the Laneige Trouble Relief Toner!

The way to a simple and reliable skincare regime is a three-step mantra:

Cleanse, tone, moisturize!

After cleansing, toning is super important. It can be seemingly redundant or seen to be optional. It is a crucial step to ensuring your skin's pH is returned to its healthy level after cleansing, and at the same time give it a dose of ingredients meant to repair and restore your skin. I use the toner step to help remove any excess stubborn makeup residue not taken away by cleansing as the cotton pad is more flexible to use.

Thus, picking the right toner can be confusing too.

The one that I was using before I received this Laneige Trouble Relief Toner was the L’Oreal Paris White Perfect Whitening and Moisturizing Toner which I am not completely satisfied with because it gives a slightly sticky afterfeel, but I didn't want to throw the whole bottle away so I continued using it anyway. It works, but I'm keen to try the Laneige one because I have lots of other Laneige items and trust their range! 😊

Take a look at this pretty shamrock-green bottle, it has a striking colour which differentiates itself from the rest of my other skincare items. Easy to pick it out immediately especially after cleansing. Its packaging is very unique as well. But what's more important is its contents of course.

My skin has no major problems apart from the occasional small pimple that appears randomly every few days, probably because perfect skin every-day is a myth... or is it?! I've been using this toner for nearly a week now, and my skin has not seen any of those pimples anymore. Of course there are many factors that come into play, but this is the only change in my whole skincare routine so I'd think this has contributed a lot to ensuring my skin is well cared for.

How does this Laneige Trouble Relief toner prevent acne?
This  Toner is aimed at preventing acne by suppressing the growth of acne bacteria to prevent the inflammation of clogged pores and formation of papules. It contains the extract of Hinoki Cypress Polysaccharide, which reduces the growth of acne-causing bacteria by suppressing the formation of biofilm on the skin where bacteria tends to grow.

Does it dry out my skin?
No it doesn't. It is meant to be a daily toner with natural alcohol content that gently exfoliates skin. I used to love alcohol-based toners because it gives such a clean feeling after, but it actually strips my skin of moisture, so this actually helps balance that.

Ingredients
Water, Alcohol, Glycerin, Betaine, PEG/PPG-17/6 Copolymer, Glyceryl Polymethacrylate, Chamaecyparis Obtusa Water, Acetyl Glucosamine, Phenoxyethanol, Bis-PEG-18 Methyl Ether Dimethyl Silane, Butylene Glycol, PEG-60 Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Propanediol, Cellulose Gum, Glyceryl Caprylate, Carbomer, Tromethamine, Disodium EDTA, Phenoxyethanol, Fragrance, Sodium Hyaluronate, Beta-Glucan, Ethylhexylglycerin, Disodium EDTA

How to use
- Use every morning and night after cleansing.
- Remove moisture from the face, wet a cosmetic cotton pad with approximately 1ml (about 2.5cm in diameter), and gently wipe skin.
- Use gentle sweeping motions from the center of the face and out.

This is going into my regular skincare routine definitely.

Next, I will be reviewing the BB cushion I've been using for the past two years - the much raved Laniege BB Cushion SPF 50 PA+++!

For foundation and makeup base, I usually alternate between the Face Shop CC Cream (which is another product that many of my friends use) and the Laneige BB Cushion. The usage instructions are very different, so it depends on how I feel that day. I use the CC Cream because I like its pump mechanism as well - each has their own pros and cons.

Why I prefer the BB Cushion
The good thing about the BB cushion is that it is much more hygienic due to the remote application that doesn't require fingers, the little tailor-made puff picks up product from the cushion. The puff has antibacterial air cell properties and allows the formula to glide onto skin evenly without clots and cools skin since it does not absorb moisture.

What I was worried about the BB Cushion
Due to its instruction of usage, I thought that the BB Cushion wastes a lot of product because it goes through two 'sponges', and I didn't think it could last me a long time. Every time I have to press the puff into the BB cushion, I feel like I couldn't get enough product out. So that was a little troublesome and takes some getting used to. Considering I use the BB Cushion about 30-40% of the time for the past two years (I set a makeup base almost everyday), it is still surprisingly going strong.

I didn't use it that much in the beginning because I didn't like the application method but it did grow on me. I preferred to use my fingers, but now it is easier after I started using a beauty blender, which works similarly.

Check out my arsenal of Laneige BB Cushions. I am a convert! I am currently still using my first Laneige BB Cushion of the pushBUTTON collection (right most). Which means they can probably last me for the next few years... They have refills too, which means you don't have to keep buying the entire product.

Now to demonstrate what I do with it... another reason why I am growing into it - it's super fast in blending in, I can cut down my makeup time quite a bit with this. Moreover, it evens out my skin tone without looking like I put on a lot of makeup.

Here is me in no.21, slightly darker than my original skin tone so I got no.11 as well to try, but I'll open it when I'm done with this... so maybe reviewing it next time to see how it goes. It has a smooth finishing and adheres to my skin perfectly, nicely done. Apparently, the skin’s surface temperature will drop 4 degrees Celsius immediately after application and allows a 12-hr color longevity effect which I can vouch for because I never felt any discomfort or dissatisfaction with my makeup every time I use this. It is a good and reliable companion for a makeup base.

LANEIGE Trouble Relief Toner 200ml and BB Cushion SPF50 + With Refill retails for $69 on 1030am. Note if you're a first time customer, you get $10 off for purchases above $60, so you can buy this whole set at $59. Super worth it because the BB cushion itself already retails at $59 in Sephora stores.

---

Moving on, it's the Korean skincare sensation brand - INNISFREE.

INNISFREE It's a real squeeze mask!!!

In Singapore, Innisfree stores are basically been ransacked mad by girls and guys alike because it is said to be super good and effective for your skin. I am equally intrigued - are they really that good? I give their masks a go... Masks, there are too many of them out there in the market, it almost seem like any of them would do. What about masks from this well-loved brand?

Mask up after cleansing and toning (with the Laneige Trouble Relief toner ;))!
Here I am using the Innisfree It's real squeeze mask (Strawberry). To me, this is not a fancy mask, it's very basic and straight forward, it is the sort that you stock up in the hundreds so you can mask up once every week. It has a good fit, not overly nourishing, good enough for a 15-minutes skin boost (after 20 minutes it is nearly almost dry). The after-effect is that my skin feels really pumped up and well-hydrated. It's not the best mask, but it is certainly value for money. 1030am has over 10 flavours of the mask here at $1.70 each.

---

This is the product that has been flying off shelves in Innisfree stores - Super Volcanic Pore Clay Mask!

This volcanic mask is au naturel, with a "4 Free System", referring to no mineral oils, non-animal raw materials, no artificial flavor, no imidazolidinyl urea. It has excellent sebum adhesion using Jeju volcanic minerals, allowing powerful skin purification to clean inside of pores.

Is it really that powerful? Let's see..

This is the application process. Instructions to apply to the entire face after cleansing and toner except your eyes and lips. Rinse gently with warm water after 15 minutes.

So this is the 15 minutes waiting process... during the first 5 minutes, it dried up really quickly, resulting in almost a clay and smooth hardened layer over my face. It is recommended to use it 1-2 times per week and please adhere to the 15 minutes as advised!

This is me immediately after washing it off! My face feels strangely refreshed and lifted, given that there are no 'exfoliation' or scrubbing effect by the mask, nor peel-off.

For an unnecessarily close-up composite image of before and after - completely bare faced. This is the first time I am trying the Volcanic Pore Mask and certainly not my last, it works wonderfully to clear pores to smoothen out my skin. The whole tub is also very substantial, I only used probably around 1% of the entire tub for one time. 1030am retails this Super Volcanic Pore Clay Mask (200ml) at $27. The official website sells the 100ml one at $21, so yes, if you are looking for this fantastic deal, it's right here.

Celebrating PUTIEN's Duo Tou Clams Festival - 7 Clam Dishes

Savour the freshness of clams with PUTIEN.

The rise of PUTIEN
Not just your run-of-the-mill Chinese chain restaurant, PUTIEN is a homegrown brand that began as a coffee shop in Kitchener Road in 2000. It was founded by Fong Chi Chung, who was born in Fujian, China and thereafter moved to Singapore to pursue diploma in Arts. He decided to launch Putien initially because he really missed his hometown's cuisine and decided to recreate the same tastes here in our sunny island! That was how it began, but thereafter PUTIEN's success and meteoric expansion to 24 outlets internationally is due to one reason: Fong's determination to use the best ingredients for all their dishes.

PUTIEN Duo Tou Clams Festival
This is what we see and taste for their launch of PUTIEN Duo Tou Clams Festival! I know that many people have the feeling that clams aren't delicious or are just strange, but PUTIEN totally proves my belief that 'there are no natural ingredients that taste bad, it's a matter of freshness and skill prepared'. Get ready to change your impression of clams here with their amazing 6cm succulent meaty goodness of clams encased in golden shells air-flown freshly from Duo Tou Village. Here are the 7 clam dishes to impress you:

Steamed PUTIEN Clams with Minced Garlic
This is a perfect family-friendly starter, a classic cooking style that will cater to everyone across all ages. These clams are steamed lightly with minced garlic, spring onions and chilli. The minced garlic is especially worth mentioning - Chef explained that they had specially treated it such that it does not leave a garlicky aftertaste in your mouth, even though you do enjoy the taste with the clams. At the end of the meal, there was not a hint of garlic lingering.

$20.90 (S); $31.90 (M)

Steamed PUTIEN Clam with Wine
The clams are stuffed generously in the porcelain white bowl, steamed upright with traditional Huadiao Chinese wine. Compared to the first dish, this brings out much more of the pure taste of clams - a true test that allows diners to completely enjoy its premium quality. The goodness of the clams were also steeped in the soup, making it especially sweet and delicious!

$20.90 (S); $13.90 (M)

Stir-fried PUTIEN Clams with Ginger and Spring Onion
This dish is reminiscent of many other Chinese dishes, but what's different about using clams is that its freshness and its natural sweetness actually elevates the quality of the other elements as well. If you'd love to taste the succulent essence of the clams, this is another chance!

$20.90 (S); $31.90 (M)

PUTIEN Clam Omelette
This dish is the most 'local' way of enjoying clams in Duo Tou Village where these clams were harvested from, done in a healthy and delicious manner with lesser salt and oil. The seafood element does reminded us of oyster omelettes. It is refreshing to enjoy omelette in this different manner, though I wasn't a big fan as I found that this discounted the wonderful taste of the clams.

$20.90 (S); $31.90 (M)

Baked PUTIEN Clams served on Hotplate
I'd always list which dish is my favourite - and if I have to pick, it'll definitely be this! Other than how gorgeous it looks in the pearly white bed of sea salt, I went starry-eyed with how purely fresh and juicy the clams were in this. According to Chef, the best way to eat it is to first remove the clam from its shell - it slips off so easily - and dip it into the sea salt. The succulent salt-baked clams tantalize our taste buds so much, it almost felt like we are tasting the oceans. Absolutely delicious and such indulgence for this one.

$20.90 (S); $31.90 (M)

PUTIEN Clams Soup With Toufu Meatballs
For a comforting rendition of clams, we had it in a traditionally prepared version as well, with the star ingredients boiled with an assortment of cauliflower, snow peas and toufu meatballs to highlight its natural sweetness. The toufu meatballs are made in-house. The soup is the best - remember the steamed clams steeped in a bowl of Chinese wine? This is very similar, because of the natural sweetness of the clams, the soup became very tasty as well - drink it to the very last drop!

$20.90 (S); $31.90 (M)

Salted Spicy PUTIEN Clams
Crisp and lightly battered with spring onions and diced chilli, this is a dish perfect on its own or complemented with beer. I like how thin the batter is and the clams remain juicy within the fried encasing. At this point, I was truly more surprised and impressed by the number of delicious ways they incorporated the clams. In fact, each of them has its own strengths that make them so different.

$20.90 (S); $31.90 (M)

PUTIEN prides itself on serving characteristically light, down-to-earth food that will impress the elders and yet delicious dishes that harness the goodness from fresh ingredients they have chosen. It is no wonder that they received numerous dining and business awards, including Michelin Guide Hong Kong Macau 2016 BIB GOURMAND RESTAURANT Award among many others. PUTIEN is the choice for many for their usual family dinners as well.

Celebrate PUTIEN's Duo Tou Clams Festival with PUTIEN - these 7 Clam dishes are available exclusively from 15 April to 31 August 2016.

12 apps you should download before going to China + bonus tip for Android users

$
0
0

Embarking on a trip to a new country is always fun and exciting. Good preparation work can help you avoid some of the potential pitfalls and problems along the way - especially when going to China. Why is China being singled out? This country is altogether a different creature when it comes to technology, connectivity and the digital age. Google, Facebook and Instagram are banned. This fact would only sink in when you realize that a huge part of your information bank comes from these sources. This means:
No Google Maps for your directions
No Google for random questions you have along the way (what's the best SIM card?)
No Facebook pages to check out the ratings of shops and restaurants
No Instagram to see the cool location tags that people go to.
For Android users, no Play Store to download any apps when you're there.
😨

Don't fret yet,
because here is a list of all the 12 apps that will keep you well covered for your trip to
China.
💁 💁 💁 💁 💁 💁

Preparation work starts days before you fly off. Don't wait till you're at the airport before you start downloading them because some of them take quite some time to set up!

1. Baidu Maps 百度地图

What is it?
This is your replacement app for Google Maps. Google Maps is essentially useless because it does not have accuracy within China boundaries so your best bet will be Baidu Maps.

(+) Like Google Maps, Baidu Maps have directions for walking, public transport, and by car, including the duration of time estimated for each route.

(-) If you can't read Chinese words, it will be difficult to navigate as the road names are all in its original Chinese names. Plot your directions beforehand while you still have access to Google maps (which has the names in hanyupinyin / romanized).

2. Baidu GPS 百度导航

What is it?
Do not make the rookie mistake that I did of downloading Baidu GPS thinking it is Baidu Maps. They are 2 different apps. Baidu GPS is a strictly-GPS app for driving directions.

(+) Baidu GPS is good for travellers who intend to rent and self-drive around. It has audio instructions, traffic conditions (vital for traffic-laden cities like Beijing), and offline maps.

(-) You need to download the locality maps in advance for Baidu GPS for it to work offline. This takes up a lot of storage space in your phone, but it is a good backup in case your SIM card runs out of credit or in rare places without connectivity.

3. Baidu

What is it?
You can download the app specially for your search engine choice. You can access Baidu through your browser apps, but if you don't like to keep so many windows open on your browser, get this app! Other than Baidu, com, there's also Sohu.com and Sogou.com. They work similarly.

(+) No Google, but yay for Baidu!

(-) If you can't type in Chinese, you are limited to certain search results which would not be as accurate or informative as the 'local search results' which are often articles or forums in Chinese. Nothing you can do about this unless you learn Chinese beforehand... or if you have this app:

4. Pleco Dictionary

What is it?
Pleco Dictionary is the must-have dictionary and translation app. Even native speakers like us had trouble reading some of the words around - your language skills will be put to the ultimate test. Pleco Dictionary helps to translate Chinese characters for you and tells you how to read them when you 'copy' the character onto the app.

5. Dianping 大众点评

What is it?
Dianping is the biggest review app in China. You can use it to find out the best cafes/restaurants, massage parlours, karaoke lounges/ cinemas, tourist attractions, beauty salons... and more. It is driven by user-generated content and ratings, but there are some advertised placements as well.

(+) If you've done close to zero research on the city you're going, you can use Dianping for a generally reliable review app by the locals. There are many toggles to narrow down your search: distance from you (especially useful when you're dog-tired from walking), most recommended, price, popularity, environment, service, and more. There are also discounts for many restaurants and cafes (but only applicable if you have an Alipay/ Zhi Fu Bao account).

(-) The available list is not exhaustive nor extensive enough, there are many places that are not ranked. But this app is good enough for what it's worth.

6. WeChat - and set up your WeChat wallet if you can

What is it?
WeChat is the China equivalent of Facebook, Whatsapp, and Browser app all rolled into one.

(+) They are big on QR code scans - you can get discounts, free gifts, perks and bonuses for scanning a QR code at their shop. What scanning does is that it makes you follow their Subscription Account on WeChat (similar to 'liking' their page on Facebook). QR codes also manifest itself in many ways, including at tourist attractions to help you understand more about the place, for more product information. This is the primary reason why WeChat will be useful for a traveller like you.

(+) Moreover, WeChat is the number one social media app that Chinese people use. If you want to keep in touch with anyone you met along the way (networking on the go), offer to 'add their WeChat'. You can add by searching for their user ID or scanning their QR code.

(+) You can use your WeChat wallet for cash-free transactions. The catch is that you need someone with an existing WeChat wallet to help deposit some money in it first to activate it if you're not a local. Not a big deal if you have wads of cash.

(-) WeChat gets lonely if you have no friends on it 😔

7. Uber

What is it?
Taxi-hailing app.

(+) Uber is the way of life of the younger generation in China, and it is very much used for taxi-hailing. You can attempt to flag down on the streets but it is more expensive and unpredictable. Don't forget to use your own promo code (of your original account) to enjoy RMB10 discount!

(-) You need to get a China number and a China bank card before you can use this.

8. Didi Dache

What is it?
Another taxi-hailing app.

(+) Apparently Didi Dache has more discounts than Uber, around 4.5%.

(-) You need to get a China number and a China bank card before you can use this.

9. MetroMan/ Metro China Subway

What is it?
An app that plans your subway journey. Depending which city you are in, the metro network can be fairly easy or downright confusing.

(+) Tells you what's the fastest way to transfer lines from point A to B.

10. China Trains

What is it?
An app that tells you the train journey timings from city to city.

(+) There are numerous high-speed rail trains D/G/Z/T/K lines running everyday, and this helps to keep you in check on what are the timings available. This should only act as a guide.

(-) For foreigners, you have to head down to the train station's ticket buying booth with your passport, and buy a physical ticket from the counter. Do this in advance (at most 3 days, at least half a day) especially for long-haul rides.

11. Alipay/ Zhi Fu Bao

What is it?
These are online cash wallets. You will encounter many places that ask you if you want to pay by Alipay/ Zhi Fu Bao / WeChat wallet (wei-xin).

(+) At some places, you can enjoy discounts if you use Alipay/ Zhi Fu Bao/ WeChat wallet because of the ease from cashless transactions. Another plus point is that you can disguise as a local.

(-) Setting Alipay as a foreigner is a pain and a whole lot of system roundabouts you need to go through. It is not really worth the trouble - the easier alternative is to set up your WeChat wallet when your friends 'gift you' money red packets.

12. ExpressVPN

What is it?
Your escape from the great firewall of China.

(+) It means you have Google, Facebook and Instagram.

(-) USD$12.95 per month.

Tip Bonus for Android Users:
As Play Store (under Google) is also banned, you cannot download apps that you need but have not downloaded. Search on Baidu for the apk file of the app (Baidu search:"App Name + .apk") and you can download the app as well. Do note that this means your phone will be vulnerable to viruses or trojan horses that you might accidentally download instead.

A quick word on China today

$

A reflection after my graduation journey.

I am finally back from the land where all major social media platforms and Google is banned.. made zero attempts at climbing over the great Chinese firewall, therefore I have absolutely no credit to complain about this self-imposed digital detox. This is my graduation trip to a cluster of Chinese cities (Shanghai, Suzhou, Hangzhou, Beijing), most likely the only one before I embark on the next important part of my life (also known as "the working life").

What is China like?

A lot of people have asked me why I decided on China for my graduation trip, questions loaded with a lot of trepidation and assumption of this country. If we were to look at a country simply based on the international news reports and media impressions on it, we are really only getting a one-dimensional idea of what it is. Tainted milk powder, man-eating escalators, irresponsible hit-and-run drivers, dishonest and uncultured people, and a whole lot more of horror stories of danger. It definitely fueled a lot of my doubt, but at the same time, I wanted to see and judge for myself. What is China like? Past and present, I've studied about it in theory and papers across modules, but nothing beats walking the ground and seeing the place itself. (Though I would very much wished I had stayed longer to really observe the locals in their daily lives)

A fellow train passenger told me that the cities I've been represent the most developed parts of China and to really fully understand what China is, I've got to visit the 老少边穷 (the old, the minority, the areas near the country's borders, and the poor). This idea is echoed by some of my new Chinese friends. The cities that I managed to visit this time are limited but just based on these, one thing is for sure - China is massive, and the people in this country can vary so much even across and within these developed (mega)cities. This trip definitely sparked a further interest in me, and a deeper curiosity to see what the locals consider 'the true colours of China'.

A thoroughly networked country

China have their own set of social media platforms and digital apps (those that actually have VPN is a select few) - WeChat, Baidu/ Baidu Maps, Alipay, etc and they demonstrate how social media should work to their benefit. Precisely because they are barred from other disorganized and fragmented platforms, they are able to create a cohesive network. Everything is tightly-weaved into their business systems of small to medium to large businesses, with a centralized platform that maximizes the function of the QR code. I was really impressed by this. They have managed to make technology work for them. The world laughed when the Chinese government started banning Facebook, but right now, it is certainly reaping in amazing results.

Considering how geographically big it is, I was equally fascinated by the pace at which the physical networks have been built. Every city has a sprawling metro system within the city centre, with lines in the works and the system continuously being expanded. Then there's the 高铁 (high speed rail train) which goes above 300km/h - globally it is the busiest operating system at over 19,000km, with destinations to the borders of China. Despite the train stations being quite a nightmare to be at (attribution to the passengers, not the service), the organization of the high traffic flow of passengers operates like clockwork. With the quality of transportation as the backbone of every country, China and her cities are definitely developing at a remarkable rate, made possible by the resources and human capital they have.

Closing note

China is not without fault; I went with low expectations, a bagful of paranoia, and complete mental preparation for pushy service staff, dodgy cab drivers, queue-cutting aunties, spit, smoke and haze, and of course, eye-popping toilets. The cities have exciting infrastructure development, and are enthusiastically improving how civilized the people are. Loudspeakers in metro stations call for passengers to disembark before boarding, and not to rush on escalators... on replay. Officials with red sashes order people to follow 'rules of civilization', and signs are pasted everywhere to remind people not to engage in acts of discarding bodily waste anywhere. It is a little jarring, but it could just work.

A people of 5000 years of civilization, a force to be reckoned with.

The beef ‘tagliata’ with celery root, sautéed artichokes, and drizzled over with veal jus, on the other hand, is a juicy platter of grilled and carved beef that won over the entire table. I'd say, take both.

Travelling Guide to Mui Ne, South Vietnam

Vietnam's own underrated jewel.

To end off my virgin trip to Vietnam with Mui Ne is definitely icing on the cake for me. This little quaint town has surprised me through and through with what it had to offer. Even though the faded pictures of Mui Ne at Saigon's tour agencies were not all that enticing, but experiencing Mui Ne totally blew me away. That proves that nothing beats seeing it in person and experiencing Mui Ne for yourself, with plenty to do, see, eat and completely relax yourself here. Here I compile all my Mui Ne experiences in one post as a travelling guide just for you:

Getting to Mui Ne from Ho Chi Minh City

Nearly a 6-hour ride away from Ho Chi Minh city, Mui Ne is set at the coast of Vietnam facing the gorgeous East Sea and South China Sea. Being already familiar with the Pham Ngu Lao backpackers lane, we booked a straight bus at one of the tour agencies soon after we reached Saigon from Can Tho. We left the city at around 10 in the morning and reached Mui Ne shortly after 4pm. Most of the buses are sleeper buses, which means you can lie down and rest for the journey. It was fairly comfortable with short breaks in between for toilet breaks.

General points on Mui Ne

Most of the restaurants, bars and lodging are located on the Nguyễn Đình Chiểu street, one straight road that is easily navigable, almost closed off from civilization with mostly tourists and the small tourism industry serving them. It reminds me of Bali but a thousand-fold less touristy and commercialized, much more laid-back and enjoyable.

Accommodation in Mui Ne

We didn't book any accommodation in Mui Ne, but managed to get this bungalow hut rooms at 15USD per night, which is an amazing steal. This is Hongdi Bungalows, one of the bungalow resort apartments along the beach side of the Nguyễn Đình Chiểu road. No booking required as it was off-peak season and there were plenty of rooms available. The room was generally clean and basic, not fancy but sufficient. The best part is guests have access to the beautiful, serene and quiet beach just 10 metres away from the back of the resort (the resort area is not big). The beach had absolutely nothing on the horizon, making it a dream to visit. I miss it so so so much! You can literally hear the waves even from your bed.

Beach is life.

I had a great time at the beach just soaking up the atmosphere, doing yoga and running into the shallow waves. If you ever needed to change your shoes or clothes or have a quick shower after dipping into the sea, your resort is right behind you. Isn't that extremely convenient? I loved having that stress-free feeling - do whatever you want without worrying about logistics issues. There are windsurfing/ kite surfing lessons, jetskiing, sailing, kayaking available, though most people are just paddling around the water chilling instead of doing high-intensity sports. How remarkably quiet the whole place is!

Your 24-hour store.

If you ever need anything, there is a handy 7-11 along the main street.

Joe's Art Cafe
El Latino
Nhà Hàng Lâm Tòng

Dining in Mui Ne - bars, restaurants.

There are a couple of good music bars and restaurants around, enough variety for you to try for a two to three-day trip in Mui Ne. The number one restaurant that my sister and I loved was Joe's Art Cafe which was more like a live music bar with nostalgic classic songs from the 80's like Lemon Tree, Oh Pretty Woman, Hey Jude and Hotel California.  They serve mostly pizzas, American cuisine, pastas, burgers and sandwiches. Not to mention, their beers and alcoholic drinks are cheap too. I love the vibe a lot. There is access to the beach from Joe's as well, though at night the tide comes in high and it's too dark and dangerous. Nevertheless, they have a pool table and a swimming pool within the music bar/ restaurant itself  - think you can take a quick dip while sipping on whiskeys. Regretfully I didn't take much decent pictures at this place but I was too busy enjoying here. A quick shoutout to the live singer at Joe's - you are really great and sporting!

Joe's Art Cafe is good for: Post-dinner drinks and bites

The second restaurant we visited was El Latino, a Mexican restaurant, along the same stretch with a very friendly boss. Portions were small and prices tend towards the pricey end - but only by Vietnam standards, otherwise it is still honestly much more affordable for the same thing you get in Singapore. Their happy hour drinks are sufficiently potent and really tasty, a decent passionfruit mojto. The decor is cute and the vibes are fun and puts you in a holiday mood in an instant.

El Latino is good for: Lunch, and some mid-day drinks

Finally, the restaurant we visited Nhà Hàng Lâm Tòng, with an amazing view of the same beach I mentioned previously, dine in some seafood, pancakes (ban xeo) and pho while staring into the horizon and watch the sky turn into a brilliant thousand shades of blue and grey as evening beckons. I have my reservations on the food - don't expect too much. Most of the price and enjoyment comes from sitting at the tables with a fantastic view.

Nhà Hàng Lâm Tòng is good for: Chillin' with a beach view, with some seafood and drinks

There are plenty of other cafes, restaurants and bars that look awesome as well so go forth and explore - you might even find something better than I did. These are the ones that I went to, not necessarily the best, but I'll definitely recommend Joe's Art Cafe.

Other activities in the evening include massages, nail pampering sessions, ice-cream dates, planning your day trips at one of the few travel agencies on the street... shopping is pretty dismal except for one shop selling beachwear.

Half-day tours begin before 5am, depending on your tour agency - but they want you to be able to catch the sunrise at the sand dunes so forgive them for the ungodly hours! It will be worth it. Half-day tours are priced at 20USD per person, including transportation from your accommodation (likely to be on the same street for most people) to the white sand dunes, red sand dunes, Fairy Stream, fishing village and back. It takes slightly over 1 hour to drive to the white sand dunes - our first location for the half day trip. We went by a jeep of 7 people, and it was one of the most amazing mornings I have ever had. The jeep went too fast for any decent photo to be captured, but the landscapes changed from forests to rocky terrain to sand dunes continuously (such a visual delight!!!) until we finally reached the white sand dunes where we caught the sunrise in time:

Desert in Vietnam? I must be really ignorant but I never knew there were sand dunes in this Southeast Asian country. It was exhilarating to be in a desert for the first time, however it was extremely tiring running up and down the sand dunes. It was fun nonetheless. The sand was super fine and undisturbed for the most part.

The red sand dunes were not exactly red and not much different from the white sand dunes except there were a lot of young children and presumably their mothers, trying to sell us surfboards to play dune bashing. Avoid them at all costs even though they may seem fun, because the tourists who rented didn't have much fun as hiking up sand dunes was hard work and it was not very smooth to slide down. Moreover, our tour guide told us to ignore them completely because the children would try to pickpocket or rob you while you pay them. Be firm and turn them down.

Back onto the road again as we head towards Fairy Stream where we walked through the shallow river to see amazing sights there were reminiscent of smaller versions of the Grand Canyon.

Every corner is extremely photogenic and breathtaking, very therapeutic to walk through barefooted. You will get wet up to your shin. Note that the beginning of the river trek is quite challenging even for me due to the slippery and sharp-edged rocks. Walk slowly and ensure every step is stable at the beginning or you might risk a broken ankle. Towards the middle of the trek, it got much easier as it was only sand in the river bed. It is about half a kilometre one-way and you walk back the same way you came. We took slightly over an hour to finish the whole thing at a leisured pace. The entry to Fairy Stream is free, ignore whoever who tries to tell you to pay them 5,000dong because they do not have ownership over it (according to our day trip tour guide).

The Mui Ne fishing village was rather underwhelming, we literally stopped and watched them going about their activities for 10 minutes and left because there was nothing interesting going on. It is quite a picturesque scene though. The smell of fish sauce permeates the air madly here.

The other place we went after the half-day tour ended was the Linh Son Truong Tho Pagoda by ourselves instead of going by a tour which had fixed timings. We decided to go local  and took the local buses, which was a little nerve-wrecking because nobody could not really speak English and explain to us how to get there. We found out on Tripadvisor to take the local bus along Nguyen Dinh Chieu to CO.OP mart in Phan Thiet (there is only one bus). Then, take bus 4 towards Tà Cú mountain (pronounced as tah-koo) mountain about a 80-minutes bus ride away.

Can you spot me?

The Reclining Buddha, Linh Son Truong Tho pagoda and Tà Cú mountain are essentially the same places of various attractions, which required quite an intensive climb. We saw elderly and children climbing though, so no excuses! It gave us major Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon and Kungfu Panda vibes here. There was nothing much within the pagoda itself to see, much of it was still under renovation when we visited (August 2015) - perhaps they are already completed by now. However, the reclining Buddha is incredibly amazing to see up close, imagine who on earth created this statue so high up in the mountains? Just climbing it alone nearly killed me...

They close at 5pm, they were not too strict about it but do not push it because the whole area was quite isolated and I'd imagine it to be frightening when night falls! As the journey from Mui Ne to this place takes approximately 2.5 hours, try to aim to leave Mui Ne by 1.30pm latest.

Enjoy scenic views on the cable car

Much of the mountain was conquered by the cable car ride which gave us a perfect overview of the surrounding regions, including the lakes and forests. What a perfect way to say goodbye to Vietnam.

That's it for my Vietnam series, I love this country a whole lot and can't wait to go back and explore more - in particular Sapa, Hanoi, Halong Bay, Hue, Da Nang, Hoi An, Nha Trang... so much of the world to experience, so little time. Till next time, Vietnam!

Mount Pinatubo Day Trip from Manila!

Rise, shine, and it's time for the Mount Pinatubo tour! I remembered waking up really early to make it in time for the jump-off point, and wondering if it's going to be worth it... well, behind every memorable adventure is some of the difficult minutes rolling off the bed in the wee hours of the morning. Some quick facts that will blow you away immediately already about Mount Pinatubo: it is still an active volcano, and was responsible for the second largest eruption of the 20th century in 1991. Many travelers go for the Mount Pinatubo hike as one of the day trips from Manila for this particular reason. If you want to visit this amazingly beautiful hiking spot, and have no idea how to start, I have all the planning tipsexact instructions on how to reach the place that you intend to go all in this post (and of course, plenty of gorgeous pictures ❤️):

Planning tips

Self-organized or with a tour?
Located on the Luzon Island of the Phillippines, Mount Pinatubo is nearly 80km away from Manila city. Here's something straight off the bat: it is not advisable to organize a self-hike because a section of the tour requires you to rent a 4x4 jeep and there are only limited jeeps. Organized tours get a priority to the jeeps. Unlike most travel plans, don't leave this day tour to chance as you might just be forced to U-turn and not reach Mount Pinatubo if you don't book beforehand.

Which Pinatubo tour organizer to book with?
The organizer we booked with is 'Sonia Bognot' of Majestic Mount Pinatubo Tour & Homestay.
Apparently she is very famous at the jump-off point of Mount Pinatubo: Santa Juliana.

When to hike Mount Pinatubo?
The most popular season to hike this little monster is during the dry season - January to May will be the best, though October to June is still acceptable. This is because the riverbed needs to be sufficiently dry for the jeep to go through. We visited the volcano in December 2015; the riverbed was not completely dry then and gave us a pretty good splashing time - exciting and grungy, yes, but not exactly very comfortable for those who don't like to get dirty! During the rainy season, the waters rise and it will be impossible for the jeep to go through.

What to bring?
A change of clothes, especially if you are visiting Mount Pinatubo during the transition periods between wet and dry seasons! You will be on the road for at least 3 hours on the way there, and hiking for 2-5 hours depending on your hiking skills, so bring enough water and food from Manila city. The supermarket and basement levels of Century Mall in Makati has a lot of pretty decent supply for you to stock up at. There ain't much facilities and food from Saint Juliana itself, so don't depend on that. If you have knee-problems and cannot hike for long hours on slopes and steps, it is best to get some kind of hiking pole with you. First-aid kits, in case of injury. Sunscreen. Lastly, towels will always come in handy, as hitchhikers from the galaxy would tell you (non-fiction version: good for shielding your face from sand). If you intend to bring a DSLR, do note you have to baby it quite a lot because the journey is not particularly smooth.

What to wear?
Anything comfy goes, though it gets chilly at times so don't think of baring too much skin without any jackets on you. Definitely shoes that you don't mind getting a little wet (though if you have decent balancing skills they won't get wet at all). You will be walking across pebbles, stones, boulders of some kind, so make sure your footwear is appropriate and won't fall apart halfway. Humans with long hair should seriously consider bunning them up or risk having them swept like crazy on the jeep (bad rookie mistake of mine 😓).

Getting to Mount Pinatubo

0300 - 0320 - breakfast, wash up, grab bags and go
We were supposed to reach Saint Juliana by 7 in the morning, and so working backwards, we had to wake up at 3am (alternative method will be mentioned later, I know, this sounds unappealing). Thank goodness we packed our bags hours ago before, so we could grab and go immediately after a quick breakfast.

0320 - 0350 - From wherever you are to the bus station
From our hostel on Makati Avenue, we took a cab to the Victory Liner Bus Station located at the cross-junction between Denver and Chicago. There are many Denver roads around Manila, I refer to the one near to Araneta Center - Cubao metro station. See the star in map below:

Getting to Mount Pinatubo - updated Google map
Right-click, and hit 'open image in new tab' for bigger image
The Google map is not updated and if you followed it, you will end up 1km away from the right destination. The old Victory Liner bus interchange is now closed. Many thanks to our hosts at Our Melting Pot for pointing us in the right direction, one more reason to stay at this hostel! ;)

0350 - 0400 - find the right bus and hop onto it
This is slightly challenging because the interchange is quite messy and chaotic. Most of the buses either leave at 4am or they leave when the buses reach a certain capacity (80-100% full). Look out for buses with routes to Baguio, Ilocos, or Pangasinan. Your destination will be Saint Juliana of Capas, Tarlac, which is somewhere in between Manila and the final stop. If you're unsure, ask the driver. Ours aren't that friendly with us pesky tourists attempting to take the local way, but they did reply us. The bus took some time before starting the journey.
Ticket: PHP200/pax

0400 - 0615 - catch some sleep, but look out for the drop-off point
If you're going with Sonia, mark a star on "Majestic Mount Pinatubo Tour And Homestay" in your Google Map. This is when GPS comes into play - when your bus passes to a point close enough within Capas district, get off the bus. There is no designated bus stop per se, and you can get off at any point convenient for you. It should take you at least 100 minutes to get there, so you can get a decent amount of shut-eye on the journey.

0615 - 0635 - tricycle your way to Saint Juliana (or just say 'Sonia')
First tricycle trip and it took us nearly 20 minutes to reach Saint Juliana, right at the doorsteps of Majestic Mount Pinatubo Tour And Homestay! There, we did a quick registration, had a bathroom break, and off we go on the 4x4 jeep and we were finally on our way! Though I must say the journey itself is quite a ride already.
Fare: ~PHP300 - negotiable - for entire tricycle (fits 3)

ALTERNATIVE:
As the name suggests, Majestic Mount Pinatubo Tour And Homestay allows a homestay option which means you can do the Manila-Capas trip in the afternoon and stay for the night before going for the hike the next day. That's what the other couple who hiked with us did, and they certainly look much more energetic than us.

Price of tour with Sonia: PHP1125

❤️ Now for the bulk of the journey ❤️

Mount Pinatubo Day Trip from Manila!

On our 4x4 jeep!
The view is just... out of the world! It really feels like we're jumping right into the cradle of nature, surrounded by the magnificence of mountains. The only 'manmade' thing is our jeep and ourselves. Everything else looks like it was right off National Geographic. These are all the formations that were created due to the volcano eruption, and the volcanic scars on the ground will determine where the rivers flow when it rains. A total geographer's heaven!

Mount Pinatubo Day Trip from Manila!

It is pretty insane to try to take pictures while on the jeep because the bumps and swerves are quite unpredictable... what's more, we cruised over half-dried (aka half-wet) river streams and the water splashed onto us riders! But well, my camera is water-proof. What better way to test it than this?

Mount Pinatubo Day Trip from Manila!

At some point we were allowed to go off the jeep and take some photos, but really it is just awe-inspiring to stand here! During wet seasons, our guide explained that this whole expanse of land will become a river, and we are actually standing on a river bed. Just crazy! The river streams we see are what remains of an impressive huge river.

Mount Pinatubo Day Trip from Manila!

Our very nice guide who didn't mind standing for most of the ride because the jeep was full. He explained to us that there are actually people living in the mountains that we are passing through, and pointed out little smoky trails that we would have missed if we were just busy wow-ing at everything we see. They are so much 'as one' with the nature that they are extremely inconspicuous to the untrained eye.

Mount Pinatubo Day Trip from Manila!
Mount Pinatubo Day Trip from Manila!
Mount Pinatubo Day Trip from Manila!

One of the bigger river streams we went over - dousing us with a huge splash! There were cows around and these waters could have been nourished with their excrement actually... we try not to think about it.

Mount Pinatubo Day Trip from Manila!

We begin at this point - the jeeps could no longer bring us further as the path gets narrower.

Mount Pinatubo Day Trip from Manila!

The hike itself is about 4 hours (back and forth) for us from the location where the jeep dropped us off, inclusive of lunch. It is easy even for me - I wasn't exercising much then during that time and probably only had youth on my side. Most of it is flat ground with some steps (short, but consecutive) at a few sections. Even for beginners, it is quite manageable, unless you have some joint issues. For most, it was like a walk in the park, and we could focus very much on the surrounding rather than the ground to prevent tripping.

Mount Pinatubo Day Trip from Manila!

Probably the slight difficulty comes from crossing streams like these. Our very friendly guide sacrificed himself to go into the stream so he could steady us. We were all very touched by his service indeed. As you can see from the discolouration, this river here has a bit of sulphuric content.

Mount Pinatubo Day Trip from Manila!

Other river streams run clear like this one. Almost fairytale-like!!
Mount Pinatubo Day Trip from Manila!

And we finally reach the impressive Lake Pinatubo... it took our breaths away upon the first sight! A pure reflection of calm and isolation... this is the deepest lake in Phillippines at 600m. No swimming or boating allowed, though you might be able to catch some water Pokemon in there.

Mount Pinatubo Day Trip from Manila!

Catching a breather before taking a steep flight of steps down (probably the most challenging one already). Well, I have to take a picture with ya, Lake Pinatubo.

Mount Pinatubo Day Trip from Manila!

The view of the lake at ground level! Here we took a lunch break and took out all our delicious stash (some of which have been eaten on the way muahaha). A quick break, before making our way back the same route.

Mount Pinatubo Day Trip from Manila!

A group photo to commemorate this day out in the nature and at one of the world's most impressive volcano sites! It is one of the places that I doubt I will return just because of the sheer difficulty of getting there, though I must say it is really not the destination that matters but the journey.

We hitched a ride with this sweet Slovakian couple who offered to drop us off between Saint Juliana and Manila city as they were headed for the airport. It was a really long drive back to Manila and they rejected our offers to pay them for the journey - the fare that we would have paid anyway if we took the bus and jeepney. Unfortunately, I forgot their names and probably one day they might chance upon my blog (if you do please leave a comment! ❤️❤️❤️)

Mount Pinatubo Day Trip from Manila!

The next part of our journey was not documented by any pictures at all due to sheer chaos. All pictures are pinched off Google but it is somewhat reflective of the place and helps in my storytelling.  This is arguably one of my favourite part of the Manila trip (my travel companions tell me I know no fear, hence labelling it as fun... but it was really eye-opening to what true Manila is). After bidding goodbye to the Slovakian couple, we were dropped off near a PNR station called Paco. Initially we were armed with Google maps but apparently Google maps in Manila is highly inaccurate and misleading because there is no symbol difference between railway stations and metro stations. We thought Paco was a metro station which we were familiar with, but no, it's a PNR station, which means they operate on different networks.

Mount Pinatubo Day Trip from Manila!

First, we had to cross this junction (it looked tiny on the map) and get to the railway station on the left. It was chaotic, with students released from schools and basically just like this junction but put 500 people into this frame.

Mount Pinatubo Day Trip from Manila!

And then this railway station - just add the same 500 people into this frame and it was a lot darker in the evening... There was no other direct way back to Makati except for this so... let's go! We had to first buy railway tickets at the little counter which says 'no smoking' for about PHP10 each, and then wait on the platform for the 6.30pm train. The platform is almost entirely full of people, and with a lot of jostling, I was worried someone would get pushed onto the tracks (luckily, nobody did). The train was late, and only arrived at 6.45pm, and lo and behold, the train was already extremely packed to its gills. In Singapore, it would never get to this chest-to-chest intimacy between commuters even at the worst peak hours. But we are not in Singapore so.. in Rome, do as the Romans do.

Mount Pinatubo Day Trip from Manila!
Similar situation. But much dimmer, as we boarded in the evening with very little lights.
When the train doors burst open, people on the platform attempted to push themselves in, and it only confirmed how humans are extremely malleable creatures! We ran to the other door where the carriage was relatively emptier... there was space for only half a person more. I stepped in and pushed with all my might, at the same time, other people started pushing me and miraculously all three of us fitted in. Along with some other people. See, malleable indeed. There was a strange sense of calm amidst the crowd - it is probably very everyday for them to squeeze onto the railway train like this. But a small victory for us. Hurray! The entire carriage of men (not a single woman in sight) looked at us strangely, just like how we stared curiously back at them. We had to take about three stops to Buendia but it was sufficient to experience the re-squashing at every station.

Mount Pinatubo Day Trip from Manila!
A well parked PNR train
At Buendia, the train was not stopped properly like this, a good three to five doors of the train opened right at the platform where there was this silver railing... which means passengers have to vault over this railing immediately upon disembarking! The elderly should probably not take the train at all. And remember how packed the train was? If you're small-sized and leaning against the door, you might just get sprung outwards when the door opens, potentially flinging you onto the railing. It was very dangerous especially at night when we could not really see everything properly. Fortunately, no one was hurt. This part of our journey wasn't planned but it was certainly very breathtaking in a different way that Mount Pinatubo was.

Mount Pinatubo Day Trip from Manila - Barrio Fiesta

After hopping onto a jeepney (it was getting natural by then), we found ourselves back on Makati Avenue and then we checked out the most flashy restaurant nearby - Barrio Fiesta. We certainly did not know what we were getting into when we entered through the doors - we were just looking forward to a delicious Filipino feast because we were starving! The last meal we had was some junk food by the waters at Lake Pinatubo. When we were looking at the menu... this happened:

I didn't take this video because I was 30% petrified and 70% amused by this over-zealous singing waiter (it's the same guy in the video) so most of the time I was just staring agape at his amazing performance. He would walk around and dance around the guests all over the restaurant. The more attention you gave him or the more embarassed you look while being thrown into the limelight, the more he would serenade you! It was really hilarious at some point because he kept serenading all the people who looked super shy! He could even sing 月亮代表我的心 although halfway he made up most of the lyrics and added his own random "Chinese-sounding" words, which made it even more entertaining. His voice was very good actually...considering he is singing everything live! We were truly entertained throughout our entire meal.

If you're interested, well, remember this name: Barrio Fiesta!

I couldn't really remember how the food was because it was just too distracting trying to fend yourself from unwanted attention but yet look at his performance! But I do remember that we finished everything and was left wanting for more, the seafood platter in particular was very fresh and was quite a lot to eat.

We've gone to Mr Punch once; they have a basement section where you can chill with your friends over some drinks, and at the same time enjoy some of the fantastic music they play, with local live bands and open mic sessions for visitors to sing. This time, we find ourselves at the rooftop bar, with access to the fifth floor by an elevator. It overlooks the roofs of Raffles Hotel and feels like a cozy nest dwarfed by the taller skyscrapers around the city. Let's get onto the food:

One of the recommended bar bites that I would say is the deep fried chicken breast meat coated with potato chips (SGD10), best enjoyed when you swipe it with the lusciously thick nacho cheese dip on the side. The chicken breast is quite a hearty choice to have, less tender than other choice parts like chicken drumsticks and chicken wings.

A platter of three items goes at SGD35, with recommended items custard-battered squid rings, chicken thigh roulade, and the slow-cooked pork belly with red wine apple chutney and secret sherry sauce. My favourite amongst these three had to be the marmite glazed squid rings, with the caramelized savoury sauce complementing the squid rings that are super qq in texture!

The Herb crusted Barramundi (SGD29) is one of the signatures most people would remember from Mr Punch Public House. Layered over the tender-fresh barramundi fish is an olive-green tarragon sauce, with in-house beetroot gel on the side. I must say, the tarragon puree coated on the fish was interestingly delicious and uplifting. The Wagyu Beef Burger (SGD24) was perhaps relatively uninspiring but stays on the side of being safely well executed. Its patty was Rangers Valley rostbiff, stacked heavily against tomatoes and tartar sauce to make a good ol' burger. The most memorable main dish has to be these  sleek shoulder cut slices of medium rare Iberica Presa Steak (SGD32) sourced from Spain, impressing all of us with its beef-like texture (spoiler: it's actually pork!) and melt-in-the-mouth quality. Savour the steak with the ambrosial homemade pistachio puree, as this quick-to-please moist slices ooze its meaty goodness in your mouth.

The Flaming Tiramisu (SGD16) is essentially a deconstructed tiramisu with a rather heavy-handed drizzling of vodka over the fiery party of a dessert. Quite an enigma to enjoy, and some of us likened it to the Waterfall. That's the way it's supposed to be, and I am recommending you to pick a bit of every component to 'reconstruct' the tiramisu. For an element of fun in your dessert, get this fruity granita! You have to crack open the pretty grape skin meringue to see what's beneath it. This tangy, strong-bodied Yuzu Grape Granita (SGD14) is a creation from yuzu with an accompaniment of fresh berries. This refreshing combination is surely set to awaken your senses...! Chocolate lovers will not miss the decadent choice, with dark caramel and chocolate on the side to pair with the moist Banana Chocolate Cake (SGD14). The Passionfruit Creme Brulee (SGD14) is both a feast for the eyes and your tastebuds, with a halfed mango topped with crunchy almond crumbs, passionfruit cubes and custard cream amidst these. It wasn't exactly creme brulee, but perhaps with a contemporary spin to it.

Be prepared for the wide range of drinks that Mr Punch has for you - this place after all, specializes in being a fantastic watering hole to give you a good time with your buddies! Mr Punch offers a wide variety Don't miss out on the Whiskey Sour, a premium choice that has tangy lemon accents, and the Chilli Mojito that they just launched. Their Signature Mr Punch drink is inspired from the English Christmas Punch served warm in a silver chalice.
