I've heard Ave told me how she loved this Korean restaurant a couple of times, so what's better than hearing about it is to go down and enjoy this place. Jang Won, that is the name of this incredibly homely family-run restaurant in one of the streets in Chinatown Singapore. The street that Jang Won sits on is also home to a couple of other pretty popular eateries.

Upon entering, this place almost immediately reminds me of the Korean restaurants I frequent when I was in Melbourne... it gives me the fuzziness of someone's living room, especially the warm reception by the young and upbeat service staff. I took a liking to this place almost immediately.

Of course, we start with some side dishes, the juicy and sweet beansprouts are my favourite, though the spicy kimchi tofu slices were pretty yummy too!

Their kimchi pancake (SGD10) is one of the best I've tried, with layers of sweet, sour and spicy in a single bite, with the distinct fragrances of onion and juicy bites of prawns in every slice. The only drawback is that it's pretty small, it only got away with its size because it was so yummy.

We also tried their dolsot (stone pot) bibimbap (SGD15), a straight-forward, mouthwatering dish that doesn't need much explanation nor frills. They don't care much for making the dish 'pretty'.  If you enjoy earthy, dependable flavours, this dish is for you. With a good shake-up, the smoky fragrance permeates throughout the rice.

Finally, we challenged our spiciness tolerance (which was apparently close to zero) with the Pork gochujang-jjgae (SGD16)! It was a powerful sinus-clearing concoction, with spiciness that really roared through my throat, but it was crazily addictive that we finished nearly everything in the pot! I would say that if you can only take mild spiciness, this is definitely not for you, but if you appreciate a good spicy dish, you will love this to bits!

Jang Won definitely should be considered as one of the more authentic Korean restaurants in Singapore, with a really down-to-earth personality. They have good food and a cozy atmosphere, that's it. What else do you really need? :)
