Pick the cocktails, wines, or any beverage of your choice from Zafferano's extensive bar. With a couple of friends, you can sip on it at their gorgeous outdoor terrace with cascading foliage. It is the perfect city getaway. Celebrate Italian Republic Day with June’s cocktail specials - Zafferano's bar team has concocted two specials to tickle your tastebuds. Choose between a refreshing Bellini or a mildly spicy Gingertini.

The Norwegian trout cubes of delightfully succulent and fresh quality, alongside red radish, pomegranate, quail eggs, caviar, grilled asparagus. The lobster bisque was savoury, wonderfully thick and generous with lobster meat, with a citrus touch of orange. Dip it with the bread to offset some of the saltiness to enjoy the bisque at its best.

A tough call to make between the homemade ‘cavatelli’, fresh seafood in white wine sauce and tomatoes - pasta made in-house, with perfect al-dente and qq texture that is impossible not to love it! The beef ‘tagliata’ with celery root, sautéed artichokes, and drizzled over with veal jus, on the other hand, is a juicy platter of grilled and carved beef that won over the entire table. I'd say, take both.

Johor Bahru's Dessert Cafe: Shakespeare Milkshakes

Johor Bahru's Dessert Cafe: Shakespeare Milkshakes

While I am on a roll to bring you everything in JB, here is another one. I realized that more trips need to be in order because one thing's for sure. The whole cafe / dining scene in JB is rippling hot! And there are so many places to try, so little time. Here, I picked up a little fresh dessert cafe that popped up just a few months ago, Shakespeare Milkshakes. This cafe took over the space that was By Grace, Trus, the little corner that's sandwiched between Jalan Dhoby and Jalan Tan Hiok Nee.

Johor Bahru's Dessert Cafe: Shakespeare Milkshakes

The team at Shakespeare's was reserved and sweet, with efficient service to deliver orders.
Being a dessert cafe, they serve coffees, hot chocolates, teas, soft serves, yogurts, croffles, waffles and of course, their signature milkshakes. Shakespeare's is not as gimmicky as their neighbours. After having their milkshakes and yogurts, it is obvious they have a serious heart at making delicious desserts without trying too hard.

Johor Bahru's Dessert Cafe: Shakespeare Milkshakes

Their Specialty Shakes (ah-hem, instagrammable) go at RM 16, which includes Kinder Bueno Shakes, Banana Tower, Snickers Shakes, Berries Sparkles, Avocado Power and Matcha Adzuki. We took on the Matcha Adzuki because I love all things matcha (!!!). Look at it, isn't it pretty? It is super refreshing, thick and milky. The matcha taste kind of 'floats' in the background, and having the tried and tested winning combination of sweet and soft azuki beans makes it a perfect dessert drink on a hot day. The best part is that it isn't too sweet. The snowflake cookies at the top is savoury and a little strange to taste, but well, it does make the whole thing look sassier.

Caramel Granola Yogurt

Johor Bahru's Dessert Cafe: Shakespeare Milkshakes
Nutella Banana Yogurt

For their yogurts, they do Caramel Granola and Nutella Banana, each of which goes at RM10. I'll say this straight - it's better than llaollao. Their yogurt tends to be a bit sourish rather than sweet, but it's still the 'mainstream' acceptable sort of taste rather than natural yogurt. Nutella sauce drizzling over yogurt is definitely a safe choice, but I preferred the wild caramel granola one for its salted accents. I was certain it was Salted Caramel (as opposed to just caramel), and it was a jolt to the senses. In a good way. Go for the caramel one!

Johor Bahru's Dessert Cafe: Shakespeare Milkshakes

If you'd like, you can even take the outdoor seats.
And face a construction site and pretend you're in Paris.
They are closed on Wednesdays, though.

Best of JB Watering Holes, Taman Molek's Whisky House

Best of JB Watering Holes, Taman Molek's Whisky House

Whisky House is classy and a perfect place for an evening of cocktails and whiskys. A fantastic place to chill with an impressive 300 over whisky and cocktails selections in this opulent restaurant that's just out to impress. The owner is serious about his alcohol with a heart for service, and if you're lucky and on a day that is less busy, friendship. At Whisky House, if you're looking to just hang out with your best buds, they have a live band going on some evenings for cool beats. Or on days with important games, there are huge screens for you to catch your favourite games in HD live. Find out why Whisky House is the best nightlife spot in JB:

Best of JB Watering Holes, Taman Molek's Whisky House

If I were to pick my poison, it has got to be whisky. Once you go whisky, you just can't go back. I used to like vodka a lot when I was first acquainted with alcohol, then my taste got more 'refined' (goodbye clubbing, binge-drinking days). What's more, it is my muse and my favourite alcohol companion, always. So if you are just like me, or you can understand me, my fellow whisky-lover, this place is heaven on earth. Give me a high five! ;)

For one, I definitely recommend their Whisky Flights:

For the uninitiated, Whisky Flights are whisky tastings. You get to sample small amounts of whisky pours of your choice so that you can get acquainted with the different tastes, or if you just want to enjoy the different aromas! It is an entire subject in itself to know all about whiskies, from its aroma, body, aftertaste, and more. You can ask all the questions you want to learn more, the folks here would love to spread the word and knowledge.

And best part... there IS a best part... it is obviously going to be much more affordable than drinking in Singapore. I love whisky, but I have to admit it's an expensive upkeep. You can finally let loose at Whisky House while knowing that it will be great quality whisky, huge variety of types for you to try / choose from, excellent ambience, and perfect value-for-money. The price point is especially reasonable. If you follow the Whisky Flights prices in Singapore, this is easily nearly half of the price you would have to fork out. For a new skill and a cool night out, I think it is well worth it.

Best of JB Watering Holes, Taman Molek's Whisky House

Not everyone is into pure hard liquor, otherwise, you can go for the easier drinks... their winning signature cocktails! When it comes to cocktails, there aren't many good ones out there. It is so easy to make a 'decent' one, but hard to find out to really rave about. The boss of Whisky House was really welcoming and confident in his cocktails, so I took a first sip and OK. I understand it finally.

Best of JB Watering Holes, Taman Molek's Whisky House

Their award-winning Strawberry Caipiroska cocktail is da bomb. You can say that it's a ladies' drink, but really, it's impossible for anyone not to enjoy this. The lime and crushed ice makes it wonderfully refreshing. On top of that, the tinge of sweetness from the strawberry puree and brown sugar provided a lot of dimensions to the flavours in this cocktail. This combination is certainly easy to please! What's more, this concoction has very perfectly measured proportions for all the different elements to create this sensational cocktail. If you're not sure about what to order, this will not go wrong.

Best of JB Watering Holes, Taman Molek's Whisky House

The other cocktail was a drink that would is popular among the men, but I really like it too for it is a whisky base! The cinnamon is smoked to create a strong fragrant, sweet ground spice flavours in the whisky itself, while the lemon citrus rind added a sour tinge that always complements whisky so well.

Although they specialize in whiskies and in general, cocktails and drinks, Whisky House do have delicious mains and tapas bites here as well.

Best of JB Watering Holes, Taman Molek's Whisky House

The Seafood Pesto (RM28.90) from Whisky House is such a hearty and indulging dish, it is almost like a big hug for your insides and keeping your stomach protected from the alcohol you're about to enjoy. Pro tip: carbs a good to 'absorb' alcohol! With fresh creamy pesto sauce mixed into the pasta dish, every mouthful is such a delight. Oysters and prawns create a more wholesome dish too!

Best of JB Watering Holes, Taman Molek's Whisky House

Another recommended choice of main is the Lamb Cutlets & Chorizo Sausage (RM42.90), robust and full in its savoury, meaty flavour. Together with the springy chorizo sausage, this makes for such a satisfying main!

If you've had dinner elsewhere, but are still itching for some tapas, they do serve delicious pops in the mouth such as the Chicken Ham Bruschetta (RM18.90) and Prawns on Chorizo (RM19.90).

Sink into the cozy plush seats. The tables are far apart from one another so you can indulge in your late night conversations.

As the first and only whisky specialist in Johor Bahru, Whisky House is a must-visit for those looking to spice up your night life for a weekend in JB.

What to eat in Dubai: Reem Al Bawadi

$

This was the beginning, the start of our adventures in Dubai. What better way than a delicious meal at a self-proclaimed Best Arabic Restaurant in Dubai? Hey, that's a really big hat to fill because I can safely say I haven't had a bad meal in Dubai (or the UAE for that matter), so yes, let's go and find out more about Reem Al Bawadi!

First order of things: let's take a selfie! At the Dubai Marina branch, they have a sophisticated indoor restaurant seating and an alfresco area with plush sofa chairs. I thought it might be impractical to choose such a lush fabric choice of furniture, especially to be placed outdoors, but hey, in Dubai it almost never rains! You can even see a bit of Burj Khalifa from certain angles in the alfresco seating area.

The meal was kickstarted with some Reem Al Bawadi cold mezza mix, which includes the hummus, with earthy and creamy flavours of mashed chickpea, blended with tahiti, olive oil and lemon juice. It was very appetizing! My previous encounters with hummus was not exactly great but I obviously haven't had the real deal. This was fantastic, and even better for people who want a great initiation to Arabic food. The Sharwarma Chicken was tender and flavoured with spices that made it so delicious, it's really 'finger-lickin-good'! We also had the Grilled Salmon Fillet, Fresh Norwegian salmon fillet seasoned with fennel and served with sautéed vegetables. All in all, the dining experience at Reem Al Bawadi was full of rustic flavours of Arabian cuisine and spices that made us craved for more at the end of the meal.

Their  drinks menu is quite extensive, but I settled for my favourite Moroccan mint tea which was super comforting for a cold evening out in Dubai. If you're interested, you can take a look at their full menu here.

Top 18 Things I Love about Cambodia

Top 18 Things I Love about Cambodia

Do you want to make the most out of your next trip?

If yes, all you ought to know is that the ultimate key to enjoying your exotic tours is to choose your destination carefully. Always keep in mind that certain scenes and sounds are more thrilling than others out there. Since a lot of fact-checking is required as you search for the most amazing places in the world, it's extremely prudent to compare various regions before you pick awesome holidaying locations.

Most Asian countries often make for unprecedentedly compelling tripping locales. Particularly, Cambodia - a Southeast Asian country with a scintillating landscape marked by low-lying plains, is a perfect example of an awesome holiday choice. As such, highlighted below are a few reasons to chose this exciting location for your next globetrotting spree. Continue reading to discover the top 18 things I love about Cambodia, as well as learn why it should feature in the trim itinerary of every savvy Asian-bound sojourner.

1. Picture-Perfect Beaches & Scenic Islands
You have virtually every plausible reason to grab the best luggage for travel and head to the exhilarating Cambodian beaches. According the rave reviews posted online and in offline periodicals by thousands of sightseers, islands such as Koh Rong Samloem are exactly what Thailand looked like about 20 years ago. These cute, sprawling beaches are an impregnable irresistible sight that you cannot go to the grave without having satisfactorily savored.

2. A Myriad of Finger-Licking Indigenous Cuisines
Cambodia stands out as a country why the tastiest of Oriental cuisines are served sizzling hot, and chilling cold beverages abound. Whether you're a moderate eater without many distinct dietary preferences or a thoroughly fastidious connoisseur, this is the just right region to tour.Since the country's ensconced within Vietnam to the eastern direction and Thailand to the West, they have perfectly adopted some of the most appetizing menus that define Cambodia as an unbeatable flavorful haven for conservative dieters and keen gastronomes and all.

For starters planning to give this destination a much-deserved shot, below are some of the high-rated Cambodian cuisines, according to tourist stats and reviews:

i. Bai sach chrouk: Usually served throughout the morning, bai sach chrouk is among the most delicious indigenous menus that Cambodia offers.Since the name will almost confound first-timers, the dish simply refers to pork and rice, plus a few flavoring agents and additives meant to enhance palatability and satiety.

According to local master chefs, the toothsome pork is thoroughly grilled and marinated to bring out its naturally authentic taste. On some occasions, the meat may be marinated in garlic or coconut milk for extra tastefulness. This elaborate pork is served with rice and a scrumptious helping of freshly pickled cucumber. Any tripper will enjoy this delectable recipe - a top cadre delicacy that epitomizes the very matchless culinary diversity of the Cambodian people.

ii. Nom banh chok
: This remains favorite to millions of English-speaking sightseers from Europe and the Americas. As an insurmountable evidence of its unbeatable appeal among tourists, the dish has attained an English reference over the years - Khmer noodles. These ingeniously prepared noodles are a breakfast staple that's commonly served sizzling hot by women who carry it around in baskets precariously balanced on their heads.

The meal consists of noodles painstakingly pounded out of high-grade rice, a fish-based green curry gravy extracted from lemongrass, kamir lime, and turmeric root. Other inclusions like mint leaves, well-selected bean sprouts, fresh green beans, some careful measure banana flower, indigenous cucumbers, plus other green veggies. Like many others before you, you'll not doubt enjoy this finger-licking Cambodian dish.

Top 18 Things I Love about Cambodia

3. Amazing Local People

Despite the beauty and scenic attributes of a given tourist destination, it won't offer much if the local dwellers are just a collection of antisocial morons. Cambodian people are simply a sharp departure from this demoralizing trend. As such, my top reason to tour Cambodia is the hospitable people. While the general population has yet to recuperate from the wounds inflicted by the infamous Pol Pot maladministration, the welcoming masses have moved on.

4. Awesome Cooking Tours
Whether you're an aspiring chef or a person who dabbles in cookery as a pastime, Cambodia is the right place to go. While here, you'll earn the tricky art of preparing Khmer dishes within short hours and effectively acquaint yourself with Cambodian recipes. It's a fun haven for anyone who likes experimental cooking hacks.

5. Colorful History & Rich Culture

As you tour the larger country, you'll discern that its rich cultural diversity and variegated history is inimitably inspiring and thrilling. Here, you'll sample the Khmer Apsara dance, tour the agricultural markets, and have an eyeful of the serious-faced monks. In the end, you'll definitely come to admit that the locality offers more than the average in terms of resplendent culture and tellingly critical history.

6. Kratie

Kratie is among the most spectacular secrets of the sightseeing track in this Asian region and it's just a quick hop, a mere skip and a short jump measured from the Lao boundary which is the entry-point to the famous 4,000 archipelagos. It is an insurmountable picture-perfect destination to refresh your soul and unwind your overworked mind.

7. Incomparable Jungles

Cambodia showcases elongated miles of exemplary jungle fauna, still teeming with rare wild species. It's simply the highlight of the famed Asian wildlife that attracts millions of fun-seeking globetrotters internationally.

8. Snorkeling & Swimming Opportunities
Cambodia features an extremely long coastline dotted with snow-white sand beaches. With all these marvels, why not sample the Koh Rong archipelago and immerse yourself in the caressing waters of the unmatched Southwestern beach-fronts, and the attractively inviting Long Set Beach?

9. Robust Transport Network

Unlike many other compelling sightseeing sites around the world, Cambodia is outstanding in the sense that it's robust road infrastructure makes it easy travel around the area. Phnom Penh, the Cambodian capital, is an example of just how fabulous it is to take many short rides and cruises within the country.

Top 18 Things I Love about Cambodia

10. Floating Villages

Tonle Sap lake remains the Southeast Asia’s biggest lake and it’s the pride home to well over 100 species of aquatic birds, various turtles, the otter, vast types of crocodiles, etc… and, what's even more captivating, eye-captivating floating villages.

Top 18 Things I Love about Cambodia

11. Angkor Wat
Angkor Wat is an imposing Cambodian temple complex and also the hugest religious landmark internationally. It was initially constructed as a foremost Hindu shrine for the enigmatic Khmer Empire, slowly transforming into a grand Buddhist temple some years toward the dawn of the religiously rich 12th century.

Top 18 Things I Love about Cambodia

12. The Cambodian Royal Palace

Like many people around the globe, you may not know much about the Cambodian Royalty. This one-of-a-kind facility will give you an insightful glimpse into the immortal testimony of the country's monarchs. Your tour of the Asian nation cannot end without a much-needed stopover at this hair-raising marvel.

13.Banteay Srei

This refers to a fantastic 10th-century Cambodian temple. The religious structure is auspiciously dedicated to the potent Hindu god named Shiva. Whether you're a stanch Zionist, unwavering Hindu adherent, or a moderate Muslim, this eminently sacred monstrosity will baffle you all the same.

14. Bayon

The above reference specifically describes an enduringly famed Cambodian temple. The variously ornamented Khmer temple is a magnificent sight that will get you glued on this singularly spine-tingling sacred structure. Check out whether your program features this detail-filled spot before you set out for Cambodia.

15.The Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum

To institute a lasting memorial for patriots lost to brutality, Cambodians have archived their worst bits in history here. You'll no doubt have a reflective time exploring this rich goldmine.

16.Choeung Ek

Choeung Ek, the notable location of a dated orchard and burial site of the hapless casualties of the infamous Khmer Rouge - massacred between 1975 and 1979 - an estimated 17 kilometers south of the metropolitan locales of Phnom Penh.

Top 18 Things I Love about Cambodia

17. Silver Pagoda

This globally talked-about situated on the southern part of the dated Royal Palace, Phnom Penh. Previously, it was called Wat Ubosoth Ratanaram. This breathtaking temple's formal title is Preah Vihear Preah Keo Morakot, routinely reduced to Wat Preah Keo in Khmer.

18. The Independence Monument
Every country has its own colorful story detailing how they finally broke the yoke of foreign masters to become captains of their destinies. Cambodians have this monument to immortalize their memorable struggles for autonomy.Domiciled in Phnom Penh and put up in 1958 to mark Cambodia's relief from French colonizers in 1953, this a resounding must-visit.

Needless to say, the immensely inviting attractions enumerated in the foregoing sub-headings are not the only singular lures in Cambodia. In fact, there are dozens of other equally convincing reasons to explore this glamorous Asian hideaway. As such, the top 18 adventures highlighted above are simply intended to give you a mere insightful peek into the inexhaustible marvels the country has in store for you.

Top 18 Things I Love about Cambodia

Consequently, you may run a web-based search in order to discover scores of other inestimably welcoming aspects that render Cambodia an inimitable sightseeing choice, before you book your flight to this adventurous nation. Bon voyage!

Chicken Up.. Korean Chicken Restaurant Certified Daebak!

Goblin fans, where are you? After watching this 2016/2017 Korean drama hit, Korean chicken restaurants are never the same again. But even if there's no Sunny at Chicken Up, they have food that will make you go masisseoyo~ Because it's certainly daebak. And and... I found my favourite bingsoo of all time here too! Find out why their bingsoos are the best here, and more:

Chicken Up.. Korean Chicken Restaurant Certified Daebak!

1. Affordable lunch sets & perfect location

Chicken Up.. Korean Chicken Restaurant Certified Daebak!

Chicken Up is a fuss-free, go-to Korean place for anyone and everyone looking for a quick bite. Street food and delicious spicy wings abound here, where they serve a considerable selection of dishes. At $8 a lunch set, it is my favourite source of amazing comfort food with affordable prices. What's more, they have 6 locations all around Singapore, including Tanjong Pagar, Tampines, Jurong East, Parkway Parade, Orchard, and Star Vista.

2. Cheapest "Restaurant Meal" in the whole of Singapore

As an introductory promo, Chicken Up Star Vista is offering their Jjajang Myeon Petite for free for any purchase ~ This includes drinks! Isn't that super generous? Especially when their Jjajang Myeon is really tasty, one of the better ones I've tried in my life. If you'd like to try the Jjajang Myeon in its original full serving size, it's going at 50% off! This celebratory offer ends 14 March 2017.

3. Finger-lickin good spicy Korean chicken wings

Somehow, Koreans are really good with their chicken wings, making it tender and well marinated throughout the meat. Then, they also create special formula sauces to complement it. This is definitely a must try side dish at Chicken Up!

4. Not your ordinary street food

This family dining Korean restaurant has an impressive repertoire of Korean snacks, including the usual suspects such as the Seafood Pancake, Bulgogi Fried, and then there's the Yangpa Bomb that is mouthwateringly amazing!!! It's essentially a deep fried onion (you can add in the different sauces) and extremely fragrant and appetizing.

5. Some say this bingsoo is the best.

I concur. I've had my fair share of wonderful and disappointing bingsoos, this one sits right in the zone of a resounding "Yes". It's a bingsoo I'll go for again and again. The milk shavings, the soul of every bingsu, are soft as snow, and the magic in this is that they import a specific kind of milk to create this lovely light milky taste, almost like cream. If you swear by a certain bingsoo brand, try this and see if it'll replace that. (By the way please boycott those bingsoos with water-snowshavings omg)

6. Welcoming chef 🔥
The chef of Chicken Up is incredibly down to earth, humble and talented at making our tastebuds tick! Thanks for the memorable meal ♥

BONUS!
For our Muslim friends, this place is strictly no pork no lard, and you can tuck into this delicious chicken here at Chicken Up too!

The World's Most Extravagant Garden - Dubai's Miracle Garden

Go Big or Go Home seems more appropriate for Dubai's tourism slogan. Because they have the tallest skyscrapers, largest suspended aquarium in their mall, tallest hotels... hellya they even filled the sea up into a palm-shaped island because it's Dubai. The most unbelievable part of everything is that Dubai actually sits right in the middle of the Arabian Desert. And how on earth did they manage to support an entire huge flourishing garden in the middle of a desert? That's probably why it's called the Miracle Garden.

My favourite Vietnamese restaurant opened a second branch, and it's even more fantastic.

There is no way to do justice to a perfect meal, except to go down and immerse your tastebuds in all the heavenly flavours. I love Mrs Pho for one simple reason: they make darn good food, every single time. A satisfying and delicious meal is hard to come by, what's more rare is consistency. I go back once every few weeks, and I admit I am addicted. Then better news came along: Mrs Pho opened a second branch, Mrs Pho House, at Rangoon Road with a less pho-centric, more seafood-based menu, showcasing some of the other brilliant Vietnamese dishes. I couldn't be happier.

I knew Mrs Pho House will be awesome in its delivery, but what caught me by surprise are the little interior architectural surprises. The window display is the 'noodle' house inspired from their logo, and the wooden pieces are made of a continuous 'strand' of noodle! What's more, it is seen as green from one side and unpainted on the other. You just have to see it for yourself. Archi majors, you know where to fill your stomach and get a kick out of the place too! The owner has background in interior design, and that's why you will enjoy such delightful creations.

We also understood a bit more about the history of Mrs Pho, the protagonist of the restaurant through this freehand graffiti spray that welcomes you immediately when you enter Mrs Pho. Before Mrs Pho became the wok-and-pan-wielding auntie who is superb at cooking, she represents the women involved in the Vietnam War who had to keep a gun by her side for defense.
For the dishes, we went straight for the dishes that are highly recommended by the boss of Mrs Pho, so you can spare some brain cells over what to order, and simply relax and enjoy the food!

Carina & Amie in the house, yo
Mrs Pho House.

To begin, we had some of their specialty drinks, the Homemade Saigon Salty Lemonade (SGD4.50) which is made with their in-house salt marinated lemons. Initially I was skeptical of it, I was used to sweet lemonade! However, I actually took to this icy sour and salty concotion quickly and found myself drinking it with great enjoyment. I say go ahead and try this, hopefully you find it as awesome as I did.

For starters, we had some Banh Xeo (SGD12.90), a savoury and fluffy pancake stuffed with pork, bean sprouts and shrimp prawns. It was really yummy to start off, and I would also dip it in the chili garlic sauce for the maximum satisfaction.

We also had a brimming pot full of Mrs Pho cockles (SGD10.90), deliciously steamed with garlic and chilli. Prying them open reveals full and juicy cockle meat inside, savoury and fresh with the taste of the sea. They can get addictive once you get into the rhythm of popping them open.

Then, obviously the highlight of the restaurant, and the dish I come back repeatedly for... the Special Beef Combination Pho (SGD9.90)!!! Every time I have this, it simply warms my heart sooo much. Silky smooth pho noodles, with the soup properly rich with its sweet meaty goodness, clear and so aromatic. I will never have enough of this in my life. The meatballs are also super springy, though they are rather strong in its beefy taste - to me it is a fantastic taste, but may not be for some.. in any case, you can always opt for the new and equally delicious counterpart:

The Lucky Meat Balls (SGD6.50)! These meatballs are named Lucky, after the boss's mum whose nickname is Lucky. Each of these is a delicious pop in the mouth, slightly expensive but once you try this, you'll not go back, and you'll forever be thinking of these balls!!

Next, I got proven wrong with the "No Star Where Salat" Starfruit Salad (SGD7.90) once again. It certainly didn't look or sound appealing, but the boss was highly recommending this, so we decided to try. "WOW" was the first thought that came to my mind, it actually worked. This combination, strange as it is, starfruit and pork meat, is amazing. This salad is refreshing and sweet to take off the heaviness of pork meat, and actually felt like one of the best salads I have had in a long long while. Apparently, the culinary team was also sold by this salad that they decided to push it out onto this menu.

Side note on the fruit & meat combination: There was a moment in my life that I thought that rock melon wrapped with raw parma ham would be disgusting, but then I was amazed that I ended up loving it.

Verdict: YES YES YES!

What else did you think I would say about Mrs Pho, come on.

I am obviously going to be biased towards good food, right?

An awesome night guaranteed here, every single time. Their Beach Road one seemed much milder in comparison, but no one is to say I wouldn't go back there for their good ol' pho if I were in the region.

Best Roasted Duck of JB: Ya Wang Johor Bahru

I am all for trying new restaurants around JB, but there's one place that I recently visited again because I missed their delicious herbal roasted ducks so much! Just the thought of it is mouthwatering enough. This place is Restoran Ya Wang 鸭皇药材烧腊大王, also the official advisor for Dian Xiao Er's herbal roasted ducks.

When we entered this Chinese restaurant, the sprightly old lady ushered us into a seat. The entire place feels like it is stuck in the early 2000s, with its plastic red chairs and round tables. People stream in and out endlessly in this popular restaurant despite its off-centre location. The wall is plastered with one huge whiteboard with delicious-sounding menu items that make me want to order everything at one go, I was completely spoilt for choice. When in doubt, ask the sprightly old lady, she will be able to recommend some dishes that are especially good that day - depending on their luck at the market, seasonal ingredients, etc!

Whole duck portion
Half duck portion
Of course, definitely don't miss out on their herbal ducks. They are not called Ya Wang (Duck Emperor) for nothing! Half a duck is a comfortable portion for three people to share, but because it is uncontrollably yummy, you might want to get a whole duck (if you are not ordering anything else). The herbal taste is rich and fragrant, seeps deep into the tender and chewy duck meat, and it is truly addictive. One slice after another, I couldn't stop. Drizzle that herbal duck sauce essence all over your piping hot white rice and I could have it forever.

On both occasions, the lady recommended to us the Nyonya Fish, a tangy sweet and assam-heavy sour sauce that definitely provided fantastic tastebuds tingling kicks. The fish was especially tender and smooth too, and I totally couldn't stop eating it until I reached my limit (I am sounding like a glutton now, but it really is bravo).

The char siew and vegetables, unfortunately, was disappointing. So don't bother with those.

For people who are bad with directions, you are highly advised to look at the map carefully instead of 'going with the flow' because it is quite hard to find. Look out for this giant yellow signboard!

West Siders Tze Char Fix: KEK Pandan Gardens

West Siders Tze Char Fix: KEK Pandan Gardens

Family-run tze char restaurant Keng Eng Kee had its beginnings at Havelock Road, and had expanded to Pandan Gardens early last year. Since then, business has been flourishing with its inventive tze char dishes that does not involve adding salted egg to everything, as well as perennial classics that we all love. So rejoice West-sider foodies, you've got one more place to explore! One thing is for sure, won't be your run of the mill place, so prepare your tastebuds for some delicious new dishes.

West Siders Tze Char Fix: KEK Pandan Gardens

The Mingzhu Rolls ($12/3 pcs) was one of the first dishes that caught my eye immediately with its sinful offers of prawns, mushrooms, salted egg, ham, and Chinese parsley stuffed in a fried golden pocket. They are presented in halves, and you can dip it in the mayonnaise sauce provided if you'd like. My take on this was that it was savoury and enticing, not overly greasy. The portion was significant for a "side dish". I would recommend to order this for some sharing.

West Siders Tze Char Fix: KEK Pandan Gardens

When I first read the name: Cereal Fried Rice with Strawberries (SGD10), my reaction was: "What, strawberries with rice? Who does that?"

But curiosity and confidence in the KEK brand got us to order it in the end. I scooped up a spoonful of cereal rice and a slice of strawberry, trying it as a combination. It was... strange but strangely acceptable and pleasant. The cereal was fragrant with its malty wafts, and the strawberry counteract its dryness with a spang of juices. Tender pieces of boneless chicken hides within the folds of the cereal rice.

West Siders Tze Char Fix: KEK Pandan Gardens

Finally, we had one of the most common suspects on a tze char dinner table: Prawn Paste Chicken also known as the Har Cheong Gai (SGD10)! Having tried the creative items, it was heartwarming to have something familiar as well. Their Har Cheong Gai spared no punches in the prawn paste. Strong prawn flavours covered the entire tender chicken wing, and it was indeed finger lickin good. Certified delicious!

This portion is great for two people, but if you're coming in a bigger group you can order some of their classic signatures such as the Moonlight Hor Fun, Coffee Pork Ribs, Marmite Chicken, Wok Hei Burgers, to add on to the variety. Remember to me reservations too because it tends to be quite crowded here. ;)

All The Feels For The Perfect Sunday Brunch: Portico Host

$

0

Fix all your life's stresses with the weekend. It's easier now with a new weekend brunch menu at Portico Host! This menu launches this coming weekend, at one of Singapore's most instagrammable cafes ever. You know what to do - find your brunch partner-in-crime and go go go! Everything is better with awesome food with great pictures to take away too.

Coffee, tea, or..? Whichever pick me up you choose, one thing's for sure. They certainly put in a lot of effort for your drinks~ The tea set looks fabulous and the latte I had was considered pretty good as well.

It was a rainy weekend when we headed to Portico Host, but there is nothing to fear at this drop-dead gorgeous cafe setting... even when cast with the gloomiest weather, it has its own charming ways, especially the warming glow indoors. For a moment, this cafe reminded me of Melbourne (to me, that's considered my favourite praise for cafes, at least in terms of ambience). The location of the cafe, housed within a cluster of low-rise buildings, certainly helped to give it a 'far-flung', isolated feel. Can you believe it is only 5 minute walk away from Labrador Park MRT?

Wagyu Beef Burger with Peanut Butter ($18)
immediately struck a chord in me. Perhaps I was hungry, but I must say this burger is quite, quite amazing. The crunchy, nutty taste of the thick gooey peanut butter slathered onto the juicy and fragrant wagyu beef patty is a combination made in heaven. I was quite enthralled by this odd decision to put them together, though I was glad it was done. I really liked this beef burger!!

I don't really get this dish, perhaps it is trying to be healthy? The spinach stuffed pocket was quite the overkill for me, even though it was executed quite well, I felt like it wasn't as indulging as I wished brunch could be. Nevertheless, if you're dying to maintain your diet streak, this is still quite a reasonably tasty one for such a spinach-centric dish.

Next, the Host Big Breakfast Pan ($24) was an assortment of the usual breakfast party with sunny side ups, sausages, roasted potatoes, sauteed mushrooms, pan fried bacon and a side of garden veg. It would probably be great for those who can't decide what they want, you get a bit of everything. Or it would be popular with kids. But I personally didn't find it particularly enticing, especially for its price (I would still go for the wagyu beef burger).

Don't expect the Fluffy Hot Cakes ($15) to have a light airy pancake texture, instead, it's really more like sweet cake. The assorted berries strewn around sends sweet and sour juicy notes tingling, while the malty oatmeal taste brings earthy flavours to the table.

Egg Lava ($15) is actually Portico Host's version of eggs benedict, with spins of using a pan fried rosti as the base. It was a tad too greasy for me. The saving grace was the perfect poached eggs and the hollandaise sauce which had more lemon juice than usual.

Granola ($15) is great, and everyone loved it. I have to give props to the team for making something so healthy to taste so addictive, with the right balance of sweet and sour flavours, crunchy cereal bits in every bite.

Would this be your favourite Korean restaurant in Singapore: Jang Won

Favourite Korean restaurant in Singapore: Jang Won

I've heard Ave told me how she loved this Korean restaurant a couple of times, so what's better than hearing about it is to go down and enjoy this place. Jang Won, that is the name of this incredibly homely family-run restaurant in one of the streets in Chinatown Singapore. The street that Jang Won sits on is also home to a couple of other pretty popular eateries.

Favourite Korean restaurant in Singapore: Jang Won

Upon entering, this place almost immediately reminds me of the Korean restaurants I frequent when I was in Melbourne... it gives me the fuzziness of someone's living room, especially the warm reception by the young and upbeat service staff. I took a liking to this place almost immediately.

Favourite Korean restaurant in Singapore: Jang Won

Of course, we start with some side dishes, the juicy and sweet beansprouts are my favourite, though the spicy kimchi tofu slices were pretty yummy too!

Favourite Korean restaurant in Singapore: Jang Won

Their kimchi pancake (SGD10) is one of the best I've tried, with layers of sweet, sour and spicy in a single bite, with the distinct fragrances of onion and juicy bites of prawns in every slice. The only drawback is that it's pretty small, it only got away with its size because it was so yummy.

Favourite Korean restaurant in Singapore: Jang Won

We also tried their dolsot (stone pot) bibimbap (SGD15), a straight-forward, mouthwatering dish that doesn't need much explanation nor frills. They don't care much for making the dish 'pretty'.  If you enjoy earthy, dependable flavours, this dish is for you. With a good shake-up, the smoky fragrance permeates throughout the rice.

Favourite Korean restaurant in Singapore: Jang Won

Finally, we challenged our spiciness tolerance (which was apparently close to zero) with the Pork gochujang-jjgae (SGD16)! It was a powerful sinus-clearing concoction, with spiciness that really roared through my throat, but it was crazily addictive that we finished nearly everything in the pot! I would say that if you can only take mild spiciness, this is definitely not for you, but if you appreciate a good spicy dish, you will love this to bits!

Jang Won definitely should be considered as one of the more authentic Korean restaurants in Singapore, with a really down-to-earth personality. They have good food and a cozy atmosphere, that's it. What else do you really need? :)

A perfect, hearty Belgian brunch at Madinat Jumeirah

Madinat Jumeirah & Belgian Beer Café

Life took over and therefore, times to go on Dubai dreamin' have been paused. Now, let's continue my travelogue from where we left off: first official day in Dubai and we're going on an adventure to see one of the most gorgeous hotels in the world. Gondolas floating through emerald-hued waterways, palm trees, 23 deg weather... am I in heaven yet? Nope, I'm just in Madinat Jumeirah.

Madinat Jumeirah & Belgian Beer Café

The iconic sail boat design in the distance away.

Madinat Jumeirah & Belgian Beer Café

This place is so beautiful, it's almost unreal. A pity the sun was nearly blinding that day, so it was best we sneak a brunch indoors while waiting for the sun rays angle away.

Madinat Jumeirah & Belgian Beer Café

Modern and traditional architecture juxtapose against one another here, each of them wonderfully polished in their own way. It is tough not to feel prim and dainty while walking through the corridors here, until we reached the Belgian Beer Cafe where everyone was out in the balcony having some amazing brunch.

The indoor decor is quite opulent, but the balcony was bright and inviting, so we opt for the latter where everyone were. Great minds think alike!

Madinat Jumeirah & Belgian Beer Café

Never too early for drinks, especially some delicious cherry beer. Undoubtedly before I tried it I was skeptical, but all thoughts dissipate upon the first sip. Life's good.

Still the best Mussels ever, by a thousand and one miles from the runner-up. These are so fresh, they tasted like they were just harvested, each of them juicy, plump and sweet! I could not bear to finish them, politely restricting myself and then reaching out for one after another disregarding table manners. They come in three different sauces, one of which is the Thai curry which cooked with Thai green curry, lemon grass, galangal and lemon leaves. This is also my favourite. The other one was Provençale, cooked with white wine, garlic tomatoes, onion, and parsley.

Madinat Jumeirah & Belgian Beer Café

We also had some of these tender port wine braised beef cheeks. The stew was really thick and flavourful, with chunks of tender beef cheeks... almost melt-in-the-mouth. Almost, but really good enough for me.

Madinat Jumeirah & Belgian Beer Café

This Dijon herb honey marinated pork ribeye steak was just perfect. The caramelized sweetness coats the entire slab of pork ribeye steak brilliantly and every bite is just heavenly. The only problem is that it's not enough. I will never get enough of this.

Madinat Jumeirah & Belgian Beer Café

A perfect, hearty Belgian brunch at Madinat Jumeirah that I don't mind relieving over and over again. 100% would recommend this place for brunch if you'd like to have a delightful time out at Madinat Jumeirah.

Yomoda Soba Good Time At Wisma Atria

$

Soba is like the forgotten cousin of ramen, but on days where you are just craving for something light and appetizing, you know it's good ol' dependable food. Yomoda Soba from Tokyo is here in Singapore!!! I had the chance to try one of the best soba in Singapore last week here in Wisma Atria. Don't take it from me, if you're a soba lover, try it to believe it! Yomoda Soba is a newly-opened restaurant that specializes in handmade Soba made fresh daily using 100% buckwheat flour from Japan. It is just about the most authentic soba source you can enjoy here.

Not just the soba noodles, but all their ingredients included buckwheat flour, udon flour, wheat flour (for tempura), kasha sauce for soba soup and dashi stock and rice are all imported from Japan. The soba is also made from only the 'real center' portion of buckwheat, which results in a characteristically elegant fragrance and pure white colour of Sarashina soba. I could taste the freshness in soba noodles that are made in-house, in its natural sweetness and qq texture! It was a really big portion of soba noodles but I had no trouble finishing them up.

Cold or hot soba? You can choose which one you prefer, of course, it's up to your personal preference but I definitely like them cold! Pop the scallions and a dollop of wasabi into the dashi stock made from light soy sauce, mackerel, sardines, bonito, kelp and shiitake mushrooms and you're ready to slurp up the delicious noodles.

To enjoy this lovely soba with some delicious deep-fried tempura, go for the Tempura Seiro Soba. The tempura here is way less greasy than usual, with a wide variety of pumpkin, prawn, chicken, braised pork, green peas and more types of tempura in a bowl. It was fun to try so many different tempuras and biting into it to find that the ingredients used were so fresh and sweet.

Not enough for you?
You can always upsize your soba noodles to a 'large' serving with a top-up of SGD3.

Favourite corner of Yomoda Soba

Cozy and very Japanese style of restaurant layout that is conducive for all combination of diners: great for dates, groups of friends or even your own solo soba time! After all, Yomoda means 'carefree' and 'easy-going' in Japanese. So you can be sure it will be a relaxing and laidback place to enjoy some Japanese soba.

Travelling around Johor - Cafe/ Food Hop/ Shopping Clusters (HOT!)

Travelling around Johor - Cafe/ Food Hop/ Shopping Clusters (HOT!)

This post is written to answer one of the biggest questions people ask me: Where are the "café / food / shopping clusters" so I don't have to travel from place to place too much?

It is a long and informative post, so if you're travelling to JB soon - bookmark this one down ;)

Walking distance from Customs

Travelling around Johor - Cafe/ Food Hop/ Shopping Clusters (HOT!)

Cluster 1 (Full Day)
If you are new to Johor, you can begin by going to obviously, City Square Mall. Singaporeans' favourite activity in this mall include stocking up on cosmetics/contact lenses/toiletries, watching a movie, singing k, and generally eating Din Tai Fung and Hui Lau Shan desserts in ringgit dollars. I recommend getting contact lenses as the most value-for-money shopping item.
After spending some time in City Square, walk to Jalan Trus for something different from a shopping mall. It is easy to access across RHB Bank, now with the roadworks almost done, we can expect business to boom here. Most people stop by Faculty of Caffeine for some coffee and visit the Johor Old Chinese Temple if that's your kinda thing. Then, take a 10-minutes walk towards DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel JB, where you can enjoy a dinner at One63 European Bistro & Bar, as well as a cocktail at the rooftop bar of Mad160.

If you're thinking to stay overnight in JB so that you can wake up bright and early for some delicious Malaysian breakfast, stay at DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel. Most people who have stayed here raved about how good it is and it is also near to the Customs, so you won't have much stress over bringing your barang-barang all over the place. It is about SGD78/night.

Cluster 2 (Half Day)

Travelling around Johor - Cafe/ Food Hop/ Shopping Clusters (HOT!)

Next, try the Jalan Tan Hiok Nee & Jalan Dhoby area, about 10-15 minutes walk from Customs. You have to walk through the Little India of Johor from Customs and you'll land yourself among nearly 20 cafes. It'll be enough to stuff you for the whole day. Places that I recommend stopping by include Ya Wang (roasted duck place for lunch), Replacement Lodge & Kitchen (coffee, brunch items), Bev C (cakes), Shakespeare Milkshakes (milkshakes, duh), Sangkaya (coconut ice-cream), Flowers in the Window (themed café), Koone (nitrogen ice cream with smoky effect) and Hiap Joo Bakery (banana cake souvenirs). There are a lot more, so explore away.

Bus distance from Customs

Cluster 3 (Full Day)
If you are averse to cab and swears off Grab, I recommend the bus option the best. It is taken by locals and relatively safe in the fact that you have safety in numbers! Students, old folks, regular folks take these all the time. From the customs, go to the bus interchange and look out for KSL, ie. Singaporeans' 2nd favourite mall in JB. Hop onto the bus, it costs RM1.5/pax regardless of distance. In KSL, Singaporeans love to fix their broken phone screens at a fraction of SG price, shop for hair/makeup accessories (one particular shop in basement has everything), clothes and shoes. I recommend these activities and also - make your blue-light filter specs here. I made my new specs with degree + blue-light filter + frame for RM360 (awesome value!). I love shopping at KSL more than City Square because prices are relatively lower. Next, head on over to Holiday Plaza on foot just a 5 minutes walk away if you are looking to do a hair/scalp treatment, dye your hair, haircuts, or massages. Way cheaper than KSL and more choices, but it looks slightly dodgier than Lucky Plaza in Singapore. Go for fun and for your wallet's well-being if you're "adventurous" enough.

Cluster 4 (Full Day)
You can get a bonus cluster if you are willing to brave a 15-minute walk away from KSL. It is not necessarily very easy to navigate (especially if you're bad with directions) but it is quite worth it if you get here, especially if you love to eat! The Jalan Serampang foodie heaven lane! Aim for the two-storey locals-favourite Lavender Confectionery & Bakery where you can bag home some goodies (e.g. mooncakes, cheesecakes, dumplings etc depending on seasons) and even enjoy a delicious dinner in the lovely atmosphere. Otherwise, the wedding-boutique-café J.C Café also sits right opposite Lavender, where you can grab a coffee. Coffee Signature Container Café with its 'cotton candy rain' coffee and Seven Oaks Bakery Cafe are also neighbours of J.C. Café. Finally, Gianni's Trattoria, JB's best Italian restaurant, is also in that region. Is the foodie in you screaming in excitement yet with so many lined up on this road? On adjacent streets, there is a 亚标云吞面 on Jalan Badik 1 and 成记咖喱面 on Jalan Keris that are super popular with the locals. There are plenty of local street food in this region too, so let loose and indulge!

Cluster 5 (1-Hour)
Somewhat nearby to Jalan Serampang (about 300m away), you can stroll along Jalan Maju where the major publication offices are, and there are many local Chinese restaurants you can find along that street. I haven't explored this area fully yet so I can't comment. It's also right next to Plaza Pelangi.

Near Customs but Not Walking Distance

Travelling around Johor - Cafe/ Food Hop/ Shopping Clusters (HOT!)

Cluster 6 (2-Hour)
I don't recommend walking from place to place for this one unless you have particularly strong legs (hopefully you didn't waste too much energy crossing the customs). If you're driving, it'll be a lot more pleasant. Some of the worthy stops in this cluster along Jalan Ibrahim Sultan which faces the Singapore coast (approximately Admiralty) include: Alona Coconut Shake Stulang Laut. About 600m away, Vantage Bay has amazing bar with great vibes, a Penang restaurant, and a bakery Wheat & Wits, with delicious cakes. If you're willing to brave the walk, look out for Foon Yew Laksa on Jalan Stulang Laut for some local-approved laksa!

Further Clusters

Travelling around Johor - Cafe/ Food Hop/ Shopping Clusters (HOT!)

Cluster 7 (1-Hop Whole Day)
Quite a bit of walking to do for this one because the places that I liked in Taman Molek area are quite far apart. Start with an early morning breakfast at Kitchen Stories before moving on to coffee and brunch at The Brew Orchestra, and then try the cakes at My Liberica Coffee! If you're in the mood, I highly recommend going to Whisky House for its wonderful array of whiskys. If you're not too much into it, grab a short 10-min taxi ride to Aeon Tebrau City where you can shop till you drop!

Cluster 8 (Whole Day, or Maybe 2 Whole Days)

Travelling around Johor - Cafe/ Food Hop/ Shopping Clusters (HOT!)

This whole day cluster is none other than my new favourite hot-spot, Mount Austin! Head straight to JWC Coffee first for a brunch and coffee. It will be a nearly 30-minute walk to the next area in Mount Austin, which is perfect for you to digest your brunch (lol, unlike the abovementioned clusters where you have no time to breathe before the next activity). Or you can simply take a Grab. Aim for the Uncle Tetsu Cheesecake, Hoki Cake Bakery, Sangkaya, and Softsrve Johor Bahru cluster for a dessert break. All four are recommended, so stuff yourselves.

Travelling around Johor - Cafe/ Food Hop/ Shopping Clusters (HOT!)

They have LOST in JB, Austin Heights Water & Adventure Park and Thai Spa for massage for some non-food activities. Finally, I spot my favourite global ramen chain here too (but I haven't tried): Fukuryu Ramen! I've got to update this as multiple clusters when I go through this place thoroughly, Mount Austin is an awesome place to explore HARD.

Highly Recommended Stops That Are Not Near Any Other Fun Places

1 - Restoran Todak
For seafood!!! OK it gets crowded from its overwhelming popularity, so go at your own risk. Along the Malaysian coastline facing Sembawang.

2 - Ah Koong Restaurant
Far-flung, highly-raved yong tau foo place that people who drives or take Grab can reach, near Taman Iskandar.

Travelling around Johor - Cafe/ Food Hop/ Shopping Clusters (HOT!)

Legit and authentic Taiwanese, homely cuisine, located between Taman Molek and Taman Mount Austin.

4 - Sugar on Top (Taman Pelangi)
A case of so near yet so far.. Sugar on Top is one of my favourite cafes in JB that is equidistance from KSL to Lavendar Bakery as to KSL to Sugar on Top. There is nothing much beside it, but it is worth going for its matcha lava cakes and other menu items.

Travelling around Johor - Cafe/ Food Hop/ Shopping Clusters (HOT!)

There are definitely plenty more to discover in Johor, up north in Skudai and beyond, but this will do for now! Will update this list as we go along :)

I Just Want Coffee Cafe Factory 30! - Favourite Cafe Contender in JB

$
0
0

I had to go to Mount Austin in JB three times and yet somehow never had the chance to go to JWC Café, and that got me quite frustrated. But this place made an old-but-gold quote true: Good things are truly worth waiting for! We brave a tropical torrential rain to get to this relatively far-flung standalone café nestled in an industrial zone... and the moment we entered, the satisfaction is triplefold. JWC is not just a café, but also a coffee roaster and a coffee appreciation / barista training workshop place.

This place looked amazeballs and immediately, I mentally noted it as one of the contenders as my 'favourite cafe' in JB! I dig "industrial chic x grunge" vibes quite a bit, and this was the perfect combination.

What we saw: high ceilings, a cool edgy refurbished factory with a mezzanine dining area.
What we could detect: inescapable coffee fumes
What we felt: 'hidden gem' feels with the non-descript exterior

But in reality, not a hidden find because everyone has been headed here since eons ago.
If you haven't been here and you're put off by the distance... it will be worth it.

The service was incredibly warm from the onset, it was pouring crazily outside and when the young service crew team saw there were visitors, they rushed to open the door to let us in. Fuzzy feels! From then on, the service was impeccable! Their attention to detail and response rate is certainly on par with, or even better than higher-end restaurants.

When I first got the menu, I flipped it over frantically to look for food (hangry!) and only after deciding what I wanted to eat, I looked at the first page... wow, I was impressed that their menu is quite a close impression of a 'working machine' manual!!

The pages across the menu did not just showcased food, but even the details of coffee machines, the origins of their coffees, etc. The menu was very beautifully done up, and it even stopped this hangry boy in his tracks while searching for food.

While waiting for our food, I could not help but stare at the coffee bean bags hanging on the ceiling! Each of them has its source printed on it, and it is really fun to look at where they all come from. Perhaps they are the reason why JWC has a natural coffee fragrance all around.

Happy to finally visit JWC and it turns out to be awesome.

Of course I got my favourite mocha, and of course JWC has to exceed expectations on latte art! I was so thrilled to see such an intricate and cute latte art when I didn't even request for anything in particular. And it tasted great! The mocha was more of the mainstream kinda "good coffee" (ie. milkier, and sweeter). Good for me, since I am less tolerant towards strong caffeine nowadays.

The big breakfast was super appetizing and also, photogenic. I love how the scrambled eggs are separated in a tiny little saucepan, such that it doesn't mix with the other items (pet peeve!) and everything in here was so on-point, the ingredients used were fresh and sweet! I mean I would think it's not hard to screw up a big breakfast but it's been long since we found something like this.

Smoked Ham & Egg Sandwich Bagels (RM26.90) was absolutely delicious. I can't get enough of everything, the salted smoked ham, the soft milky scrambled eggs, the sautéed mushrooms... even the nachos dip was so tasty. It is impossible not to love this. And isn't it the perfect brunch? Nutritious and slightly indulgent! The portion was also just nice for me.

Double-Boiled Tasty Soups From Tan Ser Seng Herbs Restaurant

Want to explore the depths of Geylang but have no idea how to start, where to go?! OK, for a start, let me direct you to this three-generations time-honoured Chinese restaurant - Tan Ser Seng Herbs Restaurant. I know it's a place I will re-visit time and again whenever I go to Geylang, which means I will never get to other places... but I have to emphasize: their double-boiled soups are incredibly fantastic. Made from recipes passed down generation to generation, this is something you don't want to miss.

We started with some earthy, delicious yam rice which was moist, fluffy and thoroughly seasoned. The yam was also cooked till soft and mushy. It was very well-executed despite it being just a simple dish that most restaurants overlook. I would definitely recommend this to go along with the soups if you need something heavier to pair them with.

The turtle soups are the highlight of the restaurant! If you haven't tried turtle soup, or are averse towards them, you would probably be relieved to know that these turtles are in no way endangered. They are farmed and are very sustainable options for food (even more so than various fish types). Besides, they are also sourced legally from a local supplier. The turtle soup is double-boiled to a rich collagen consistency, and every mouthful is heavenly. craving for this yet?The turtle 'back' is especially chewy in texture that pairs well with the soup. Isn't the foodie in you craving for this yet?!

You can try them in clear-broiled soup (SGD14 /19 depending on size) or claypot soup, as shown in the picture (SGD24/39/50/65 depending on size).

Nourishing, rich double-boiled soups that got everyone wide-eyed, thinking of the same thing: it's been a long time since we've had something so good. It tastes of the best soups that come from our childhoods, and now it's super rare to find them in Singapore. Both the cordyceps white chicken soup (SGD13) and ginseng black chicken soup (SGD13) are first boiled overnight before double boiling it to create that thick collagen textured soup. The cordyceps one is more sweet and light-tasting with a distinct flavour of the cordyceps which make it really enjoyable, while the ginseng one is a lot more intense in flavour. They certainly spare no punches in the ginseng!

Cordyceps white chicken or ginseng black chicken? I would say depending on the weather - go for the ginseng on rainy days and it'll certainly fill your guts in the most heartwarming way.

Turtle eggs are another major rarity in today's times, but if you're up for it, try it here as well, they serve them in bowls of turtle eggs that burst with yolk when you bite into it. Definitely don't miss this gem of a place out when you are into a food hunt around Geylang. Life's too short for regrets.

Everything About Bird Nest Cafe - Nesture

$

Bird nest has always been my favourite Chinese dessert delicacy of choice. A huge part of this is owed to how rare I get to eat it and its watery soft and lovely texture. So imagine the mix of wonderment and awe when I saw this bird nest themed café, Nesture, that has launched in Singapore! What kind of interesting "café items" with bird nest could they spin? Are they for real?
Find out more:

Nailing the décor: perfect for high tea
For a start, Nesture aced their décor and theme. A classy, grand white marble counter top greets all their visitors,  and everywhere else is dressed in hues of Tiffany blue, white and mint. Most of the vessels in the café is made of glass for the dainty and Pinterest-worthy feel from whichever angle you turn around.

Not just a pretty face
Nesture is certainly not just a pretty café, but it is serious in the bird nest business. Farmed ethically and imported from Jakarta, the bird nest used and sold in this café is emphasized to be 100% unbleached. The owner behind Nesture, Mr Jack Tan, points out that it is rare that we can find unbleached bird nest in the market now due how labour intensive the cleaning process is. The lack of commercial, synthetic treatment of the bird nest help to preserve it in its original, purest and most nutritious form. The sure-fire way to identify unbleached bird nest is to taste the natural egg-white flavour when it is boiled! Bleached bird nest comes off with a 'chemical' taste and smell, which is often masked with plenty of rock sugar. There is often no more nutrition left in the latter case. Nesture champions for unbleached bird nest, and uses them in the desserts that they make.

Triple your love for bird nest with these dainty little cakes presented in little glass tubs. Generously topped with a dollop of bird nest, take your pick among these: Mango Pomelo Panna Cotta, Baileys Tiramisu or Gula Melaka Creme Brulee at SGD8.90 each. While the bird nest really had not much impact on the overall taste when competing with way stronger flavours, I preferred the tiramisu the best for its good execution.

If you are feeling a little under the weather, some of these cool bird nest drinks would certainly revive you. You can opt between the nourishing ginseng bird nest or the rock sugar bird nest drinks! The ginseng bird nest tends to be slightly less sweet than your usual drink.

Out of everything in Nesture, my favourite section has got to be the cakes (other than the pure bird nest, of course). I really appreciated how skilful the dessert chef is with their cake selections, each of them are so delicious, sparing no punches in the freshness and quality of ingredients in each cake. Obviously, I took them also because I really liked the flavours they picked as well: Mango, Chocolate (my favourite!) and Lychee Bandung. The dessert chef definitely has a knack for chocolate desserts, because he aced the brownie cake as well! I normally do like Matcha, but I felt that the matcha taste was lacking in this... Each of these cakes do have a premium tag to it as well at SGD6.90 per piece.

Do you fancy some macarons? With bird nest nestled in between the sweet macaron shells?

For the traditionalists at heart, there are 'typical' Chinese desserts here in Nesture.  Or just to pamper your Mums and Aunties without forcing them to try new-fangled desserts, there is the Orh Nee with Bird's Nest served with Coconut Milk (SGD12.90). Every bite is smooth and definitely better than your average Chinese restaurant, and what's more, you get a fresh healthy and generous serving of bird nest in your orh nee.

I am not sure what to make of the Waffle with Bird's Nest and Ice Cream (SGD14.90), but I guess if your girlfriend is crazy over waffles with ice-cream all the time, you can up the ante with this.

You can buy little pots of bird nest here. Remember, the bird nest here is not artificially refined as generic mainstream big brand shops, and retain 100% of the nutrients that you should be getting from natural bird nest. My skin certainly improved leaps and bounds after this tasting session - much better than any skincare products I have used in the past year. Sooo if your mother or girlfriends have been complaining of being overworked / bad skin, you know what is a really thoughtful gift for them ;)

They come in beautiful packaging too, and it's an all-year round lovely present to gift.

One of The Best Japanese Restaurants in SG - Ippin Cafe Bar

$

Impress your other half on date nights with Ippin Café Bar's new menu with the freshest ingredients from Kesennuma Shishiori, one of the world's three largest fishing grounds. Sustainable seafood is key in their culinary ethics, but for me, all I can taste is amazing freshness and tantalizing natural flavours. The foodie in me was approving every dish throughout the meal. I was certainly pleased with Ippin after experiencing the recent lull in Singapore's food scene.

Let's start off on a high, with easily the most appetite-whetting bowl of Ikura Donburi (SGD35) in Singapore. Or maybe in the whole Southeast Asia region. How could this not be the best when they handpick every single ikura you see in the picture? Apparently, every single ikura that do not make the cut will be removed, and those selected will be frozen within 2 hours to maintain its freshness. Y'know, Japanese perfection standards. Every single ikura is sorted into categories according to size, and fun fact - there are two types of ikura in this bowl. Every one of them pops to the freshest and sweetest salmon roe juice I have ever tasted. Well, this is definitely a game changer for me, and for you people who loves ikura dons, try this one to reward yourself. You won't regret.

Tuna is one of their main produce in Kesennuma Shishiori, and that is how they source for the main ingredient in the Spicy Tuna Hand Rolled Sushi (SGD12). Certainly, you can really taste the difference immediately, with a light sweetness of the tuna fish, and the sushi was made with the warmth of the chef's hands, just like the way it is done in Japan.

This is such an indulgence with the thick slices of bonito fish carefully selected, and then baked to keep its juiciness and to remove fishiness. These Seared Bonito Sushi (SGD12) are little sushi pops of delight indeed.

Grilled Pacific Saury with Garlic Oil (SGD15) includes the sanma fish is smoked till the bones are soft, edible and tasty, then grilled with garlic oil. This is best washed down with sake and beers.

They have no lack of sakes here, and really good ones too!
Strong bases and get me to a woozy happy state without all that headache.

These cute round riceballs are Salmon Flake Rice Ball with Tororo Konbu Flake (SGD11), containing salmon flakes and sesame and sea tangle. It has an earthy, nutty flavour to it, very mildly seasoned. It is great if you are looking for something simpler.

Then, we had another life-changing dish which I highly recommend!!! The Classic Salted Squid Guts with Cream Cheese (SGD5) which tastes as amazing as it sounds weird. The squid guts are savoury and saltish, hitting the points on my tastebuds that are made for delicious stuff. I didn't know it was squid guts when I tried it, and I really took a liking to it before asking what it was. This homemade salted squid guts with cream cheese is made by Chef Taka, and apparently very popular with adults and children in Japan. It's not hard to see why at all.

They also sell canned fish in Ippin Café Bar - you might think that canned food is full of preservatives and is unhealthy, but in Japan, these are actually regarded as their "second freshest" option after harvesting straight! We tasted it straight out of the can (after immersing the can in boiling water to heat), and indeed, I would not doubt it a moment it was fresh.

They have an amazing array of other Japanese food stocks if you are interested, so go ahead and shop away! Yes, you can be "Japanese" too in your cooking with the help of all these condiments and ingredients.

Taste the natural marvels of Japanese fisheries with Table at 7

Oh, the marvels of what the Japanese chefs can do with the ingredients harvested from Kesennuma Shishiori, one of the world's three largest fishing grounds! Table at 7 use these ingredients to create several delicious items that got us droolin' for them! Any fresher, you have to farm (and cook) it yourself.

We started with one of the most appetizing salads - Salad Nicoise with Spicy Tuna. The tuna was actually canned, but the Japanese's canned food is different in that their expiry dates are actually shorter, they have way less unnatural preservatives, which makes it a healthy food option for even children. Taste-wise, I couldn't tell it was canned at all (too used to the typical Southeast Asian canned food) because it tasted very fresh. The medley of cucumbers, quail eggs and cherry tomatoes make for a refreshing start.

Pomelo Salad with Konbu, Crispy Anchovy and Salmon Flake is another salad choice, this is slightly more earthy, sour and spicy. It appeals to different tastebuds as the first salad. I personally prefer the other one which is more 'mainstream', but I foresee people liking this one as well.

I love how they play up the idea of Singapore's chilli crab, with a generous amount of crab fillings on each mantou bun. These Chilli Crab on Mantou Buns definitely got our heart with its sweet, tangy and spicy flavours! I'm hungry just thinking about these.

For those who love Shepherd's Pie, this is very similar, except it is stuffed with Creamy Salted Salmon Flakes in the Hot Pie instead. Break through the buttery and fragrant flaky hot pie crust and you can reach out for the tantalizing chunks of salmon right inside. Pair it with the crust and it is simply heavenly to enjoy. Compliments to the chef who deserve extra praise, this is very well-done indeed.

They have Shark Meatballs Soup as well here. Contrary to immediate first thoughts - Shark Meatballs are not cruelly attained like shark's fin. It is a very sustainable form of food source in Kesennuma Shishiori, Japan. It is actually a very popular dish among children as it is so tasty! I love how thick and comforting the soup is. I would love to have it on a rainy day!
