The Shrine of Remembrance is only a leisurely walk away from National Gallery of Victoria, so if you're doing a day trip around Melbourne, you can tour these two attractions in an afternoon. The Shrine of Remembrance was created to commemorate the 114,000 Victorian soldiers who lost their lives in the First World War (1914 –18). There are many more of these memorials in gardens and parks all around Australia, but this shrine has to be the grandest of all.
The shrine's exterior is inspired by the pantheon from Greek monuments. It has an indoor museum with many exhibits with historical details about the world war, as well as a viewing balcony at the top overlooking the Melbourne city centre. The views are unparalleled, quite quite spectacular indeed... better infleshmetal than picture. It is the sort of feeling that you don't feel overwhelmingly impressed, but quietly wow-ed by what you are seeing.
To reach the balcony, you have to climb a few flight of stairs, it is not that friendly for those with mobility problems. They can still enjoy a leisured afternoon walking around the premises of the shrine which is a really large space with many different features too.
